[CORRECTION] NCsoft reveals free-to-play overhaul of MMOG arriving in the coming months as Aion: Ascension as part of 3.0 content update.
Soon, North American gamers will have access to a free version of massively multiplayer game Aion.
NCsoft today sent word that Aion--rebranded as Aion: Ascension--will be free-to-play in North America beginning this spring. The change will occur as part of the game's 3.0 content update, which brings a new level cap (60), as well as fresh zones, mounts, houses, and instances to the game.
Aion Ascension will give gamers access to the entire game, which includes two expansions, over 3,000 quests, more than 30 instances, and auction houses.
Also rolling out with the Aion 3.0 content update will be new real money trading (RMT) measures, which NCsoft says will help bolster safety and security for transactions within the game.
[CORRECTION] The original version of this story indicated Aion was already free-to-play in Europe. GameSpot regrets the error.

@CocaColaNinja it's not everyone who think it's wow killer its not. i want to find New MMO, Better with new style and new engine but there's not All mmo are same and that's bad :)
This game had many major problems at launch and for a couple months too. Bots, hacks, rubberbanding, stolen accounts, hardcore death penalties, no loot on bosses... Name it. But the game was beautiful and the combat mechanics were great. Let's hope all the problems were solved and give it a try!
And this was wow killer How i remember ye? :)))))) No more fee MMos it's blizzard and bioware time to GOne free
That's what happens when you copy a 2004 game for the 100th time. I'd pay $50 a month for an original sandbox MMO.
It should have been free to begin with, this is probably a marketing strategy to get more people and then offer p2p as an option with "cool stuff". No thanks i will to pass.
Will they make it free-to-play all over the world soon (in next 1-2 years) or it will be free-to-play only for North America?
I love seeing FTP MMO but these greedy bastards need to seriously bring them to consoles as well, why limit your fanbase to PC exclusives?
FYI I have been playing since launch, and for those who say it was grindy, it was very grindy. LOL how things change, there is a guy I know on my server who went from 1-55 in 5 days a few months ago. Depends on your flavor, IMO the endgame is the best but pop was lacking, so I am happy it's going F2P.
@fatee MMO's are a ton of fun when you're playing with friends, so for the most part, people are paying for the chance to tackle an expansive, persistent world with their buddies and making new friends. Of course, there are the weirdos who ARE playing for the sake of leveling and hoarding loot, but every town has their kooks. I know I couldn't play WoW anymore when all my friends quit playing.
I'm torn whether I want to start playing again. There's some parts of the game I liked and other parts I just hated.
I've only ever played free-to-play MMO's when I've had absolutely nothing else to play and there was absolutely nothing else to do, and even then, they still feel like they're not worth the time investment.
I despise the F2P model with every fiber of my being...at least there is still Star Wars: The Old Republic.
I've tried several free-to-play MMO's, and honestly i'd rather be playing a web-browser game then them... there is just something about MMO's that are incredibly boring. If they removed the endless grinding and actually put content I care about, perhaps I'd give this one a shot - but alas, endless grinding is what an MMO is all about. That fact that some of you out there PAY to grind over and over and over... is well, mind boggling.
@Mariner32 they way that I have being seeing this game that go f2p they still have a paying service which gives them more chr slots more classes and bunch of extra stuff that should be available to everyone which really pisses me off so far the only game that has doe f2p right is Perfect World to bad the game itself isn't all that great
Strange, I've been told that they weren't going to make the NA version of the game F2P. With Guild Wars 2 on the horizon, I really don't care now anyway.
Might as well try out F2P MMOs. If you don't like it then stop playing and nothing is lost. Why not?
I'm definitely going to check this out when it goes FtP. I just wonder how they're treating the paying customer base they've had until now. I know I'd be a bit pissed if I payed $60 + monthly fees only to have the game become free a few years later...
