Red Faction series suppressed
THQ puts destruction-focused sci-fi franchise back onto the shelf after latest entry posts disappointing first-month sales.
Three years ago, THQ confirmed that it was bringing back the Red Faction franchise after it sat dormant for the better half of a decade. It appears the franchise is going back on the shelf, judging from the publisher's investor conference call today.
After citing disappointing sales for Red Faction: Armageddon as a factor in the publisher's $38.4 million quarterly loss, THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors the publisher had no more plans for the franchise.
"Given that the title now in two successive versions has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way," Farrell said.
Since the franchise returned in 2009, it has seen two retail releases and a downloadable tie-in. The well-received Red Faction: Guerrilla on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 made the series relevant again, enough that THQ prepped a follow-up in Armageddon. That release was supported by a SyFy tie-in movie and the downloadable dual-stick shooter Red Faction: Battlegrounds.
