Eidos Montreal hacked
Resumes, e-mail addresses compromised in latest attack on gaming website; online presence currently offline.
As the PlayStation Network outage enters its third week, another gaming site has found itself the victim of a hack attack. In a statement released this morning, Square Enix subsidiary Eidos Montreal said its site had been assaulted by cyber criminals.
"Square Enix can confirm a group of hackers gained access to parts of our Eidosmontreal.com website, as well as two of our product sites," the company said in a statement. "We immediately took the sites offline to assess how this had happened and what had been accessed, then took further measures to increase the security of these and all of our websites." The websites are now back online.
Eidos Montreal also offered an assessment done by the online intrusion. The company said that some 350 resumes had been compromised, along with up to 25,000 e-mail addresses. Since the e-mail addresses were given for product updates, no credit card info or other potentially dangerous information was stolen.
"No dissemination or misappropriation of any other personal information has been identified at this point," the company said. "We take the security of our websites extremely seriously and employ strict measures, which we test regularly, to guard against this sort of incident."
Founded in May 2007, Eidos Montreal is currently putting the finishing touches on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is due out August 23. The PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 game is the third installment in the cyberpunk series that started with 2000's Deus Ex and continued with 2004's Deus Ex: Invisible War. Like its predecessors, it will be an action role-playing title set in the not-so distant future that will let players go through the game with a focus on combat, stealth, hacking, or even social interactions
Deus Ex will be available in two versions: The regular $60 edition and a $70 Augmented Edition. The latter will include premium packaging for the game, a 40-page art book, a DVD with behind-the-scenes features, and a motion graphic novel included on a bonus disc. Players who preorder from specialty retailer GameStop will get a new mission--complete with a cameo from original Deus Ex protagonist JC Denton--as well as in-game assists in the form of a grenade launcher, explosives, and an automatic lock pick.
