Online game saves coming for PlayStation Plus members

Back in January, rumors surfaced that Sony was planning a cloud-based game-save service for users of the PlayStation 3. The purported service would allow members of the $50-per-year PlayStation Plus premium service to store their game saves online and retrieve them on any other console connected to the PlayStation Network.

Today, Sony confirmed the rumors were accurate. Sony Computer Entertainment America announced this morning that PlayStation Plus members will indeed be able to store up to 150MB of game-save data on the PSN, with a maximum of 1,000 files per day. "Copy-prohibited save data" can also be backed up, and all previously backed-up save data can be restored once every 24 hours.

The online storage option will arrive as part of the v3.60 system software update, which will launch tomorrow, March 10. PlayStation Plus users can select the online storage option from the PS3's XrossMediaBar under the save data utility menu. SCEA said that most current titles are compatible with the online storage functionality and that all future titles will also support it.
