At its media presentation earlier this week, Sony gave the impression there would be a single model of its Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP). That model would have the option of using a 3G wireless connection, as well as Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet and play games, amongst other functions.

Not all versions of the NGP will have 3G, apparently.

Now, however, it appears that the all-3G NGP plan may just be for Japan. Speaking with Eurogamer, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Andrew House said that, in Europe at least, the new handheld will come in two models--one with 3G, and one without.

"The first thing to clarify, which I'm not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G," House told the site. "So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."

According to Eurogamer, Sony is currently "working hard" on 3G partnerships with local wireless carriers in Europe. In Japan, Sony has an exclusive contract with NTT DoCoMo to provide 3G service. As of press time, Sony Computer Entertainment America had not responded to inquires about whether there will be two NGP models in North America.
