Final Fantasy XIV goes online Sept. 30 on PC

$50 regular version of upcoming MMORPG arrives at end of third quarter; $75 collector's edition to offer early access; PS3 launch TBA.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Square Enix showed off its upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. Today, the Japanese publisher dated the game, saying it would launch in North America on September 30 on the PC at a price point of $50. The PlayStation 3 version, which was on display at Sony's E3 2010 press conference, has not been given a release window beyond "2010," though it had been set for a simultaneous release with the PC edition.

Final Fantasy fanatics willing to pay $25 will be able to access the game eight days ahead of the masses, courtesy of the early access codes included in the $75 collector's edition of the game. (Square Enix did add the caveat that "timing of access subject to initial server capacity.") Besides the game disc and manual, included will be the following cache of goodies:

--A behind-the-scenes DVD with the obligatory documentary on the making of the game.
--A travel journal with concept art pages in which players can document their in-game wanderings.
--An in-game item called the "Onion Helm."
--A fully personalized "Right of Passage" certificate.
--Special cover illustrated by artist Yoshitaka Amano.
--An FFXIV-branded security token for use with regular password.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other MMORPGs, gamers will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.

Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

    And for Xbox users, the reason for no FFXIV for you is due to the live system microsoft installed so blame them. Enix tried to negotiate a way around it. At least you got Mass Effect (for now). You can keep the 1st one, PS3 ppl gonna miss out plus all those other good games on 360.

    This doesn't explain why there's a 6 month delay for the PS3 version. This is unheard of and they never explain why the delay. I can understand a one-two month delay or to separate releases to calibrate all the gloops and beeps but half-a-year!? -(server capacity too) - Overall the wow factor would be long dead...

    @Fatal-Chaos
    Playstation Plus is paid online, sort of. I'm sure Square Enix can figure it out. if they don't, though, I will be buying this game.

    I can see it being pay to play, but since it's also on the PS3 i'm not sure, how can the PS3 be pay to play when internet is free? Like unless they include some way of making it cost on the PS3.

    Just pre-ordered my copy at EB. Please do not fail me Squaresoft (i do not wish to use the name square-enix as it sounds dodgy), I believe this game will do us justice.

    @AzatiS

    Same here. As much as I am excited for this game I don't want SE to rush it out. I do have faith in SE though since this game has been in development since 2005 and not mention by the same team behind FFXI. So these guys have had 5 years to study what made WOW so popular and incorperate it into FFXIV.

    Pre-Ordered Collectors edition yesterday. its not paying $25 more to play 8 days early. The Security Token alone is $10, in FFXI it gave you access to extra inventory space, and exclusive items, as well as makes your account safer from being hacked... with all the rest of the extra stuff included... its well worth the purchase.

    It would be best if all of the good items weren't gone before the PS3 Launch. So let's just have the rarest items drop, and have common items for pick up.

    Whai i would like to know is will FF XIV on the PS3 work with the PS Move

  • AzatiS

    Posted Jul 2, 2010 2:15 am GMT

    Im a bit concerned about its release.

    What i mean.

    1) Did it had properly and heavy beta testing or will gamers end up test it on release?....

    2) We havent seen any major trailers with high end gaming at all. Is game ready OR will add content as gamers lvl up?

    3) Is this a "hurry" move to release FF14 before WoW-cataclysm Exp to boost some box sales / subs that otherwise would never happen ? ( similar to WAR online before Wotlk)

    Something feels fishy. Dunno , i hope is good,

    can i buy a yearly fee so i don't have to mind about monthly fee, thats annoying

  • CANOFOWNAGE

    Posted Jul 1, 2010 5:18 pm GMT

    I love the amount of people that are suprised by monthly fees. 95% of mmos require some kind of monthly fee and just because you are playing it on a console does not give you a pass on it.

    @ thattotally

    Uh...let's see. Final Fantasy has been running as a series since like 1986 man.....I would say they are good at what they do. No other developer, other than Nintendo itself has stood the test of time like that. Through recession after recession and hard times Final Fantasy continues, while all others crumble......
