Konami grapples with AAA Lucha Libre Aug. 9

Japanese publisher steps back into the ring, agrees to distribute Slang's debut pro wrestling title for PS3, 360, Wii, DS, PSP.

Konami is passing on puroresu and looking at lucha libre. The Japanese publisher today announced a deal with Slang to distribute the company's Mexican pro wrestling game Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes Del Ring in the United States, Canada, and Latin America (outside of Mexico).

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of Lucha Libre AAA are being developed with the Unreal Engine 3 by Immersion Software, with offices in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Bogota, Colombia. Argentine developer Sabarasa Studios is handling development on the Wii, PSP, and DS editions of the game.

The game's full roster of playable wrestlers has not yet been revealed, but it will include featured stars of AAA wrestling like La Parka, Konnan, El Elegido, Abismo Negro, Psycho Clown, Electroshock, and Charly Manson.

While this won't be Konami's first time in the pro wrestling ring, it is the publisher's first time dealing with a real-life license for one of its grappling games. The publisher had relied on fictitious wrestling federations for efforts like 2004's Rumble Roses on the PlayStation 2, its 2006 Xbox 360 follow-up Rumble Roses XX, and the 1988 arcade game The Main Event.

I meant wrestling games. Konami was never good at making "Wrestling" games. No, I haven't been living in a cave. I was playing Pong and Space War before you were born. Before that I was playing text games like Zork, Aventure, Star Trek, Tank, etc..

The main event was konami's best wrestling effort so far. Hopefully they get this one right.

if they have a multi-player season with quasi-rpg elements we'll be aces... hell, if the ai can figure out how a ten count works we'll be aces. thq has gotten so damn lazy with their wwe license, they keep screwing with the the controls, which was the last thing wrong with their repackaged titles. AAA is crazy and we can barely understand any of it, but it's fun as hell. extra points if they have the midget wrestlers.

I gotta agree with the (few) Rumble Roses fans. That game would be so much better now with the technology advanced and more effort put into it. It may not be SvR but you gotta give a new IP a chance. That being said, this looks like a good game visually tho I think I saw some animation "pops" in the trailers. Can't be any worse than the TNA games.

And Firepro is still the top of the hill despite it slipping a bit with the last installment. Bring 6Ms to the PSN/XBL/VC and I'll definitely grab it (goes to hook up his Saturn).

Dude.. Rumble Rose was not a good wrestling game. The women looked great, but the controls and action were not the best. Konami was never good at making wrestling games. The Fire Pro Wrestling series is one of the better wrestling games. There were a few Japan style wrestling games that came out on the Saturn and Dreamcast many years back that were very good. I can't think of the names of them now. The Raw -vs- Smackdown games have been pretty good as well.

@vega13mv dude, did you not see their last ppv? seriously. it was embarrassing. abyss didnt win the title, but slammed 3 guys through the ring, and hes celebrating like he won how can you have a crapload of 50 and guys NEARLY SEVENTY trying to wrestle pushing out the new guys. tna should be called wcw 2010! tna=FAIL! at least on the "pg soap opera starring cena" you see wrestling sometimes

Not sure by the article's text, but this game is being distributed in Mexico, right? Because that's obviously where the most appeal is.

    @ MoonMarvel

Cena is the reason i started watching TNA. I'm sick of this PG soap opera SNL type crap that WWE is doing now. At least on TNA i actually watch WRESTLING. as far as this game goes, I think CMLL would've been a better choice. Mil Mascaras, Blue Demo and El Santo all deserve as much recognition.

Have any of you even seen AAA? Its aired here and its the WORST wrestling on the planet! Its boring, perdictable and in no way popular even amongst hispanics in the USA (Not mexico) who would rather watch WWE. The matches are bad and you can call every move! @NewbiePoster

While I like WWE, I do agree with you that AAA is garbage. I will check out 80's and 90's stuff upon your recommendations. Because todays AAA is terrible.

    @Yomigaeru

Try watching WWE, Cena isnt boring and your attack on WWE plotlines...When was the last time you even watched WWE? Some can be silly, but thats the point! Humor. Storylines like HBK vs Undertaker were not "boring and infantile". Also saying cheers friends doesnt add anything to your comment. Thanks.

Oh please everyone knows Mexican Wrestling (AAA) has gone WWE-ish kind of show, bring back the real 80`s and 90`s Lucha Libre Mexicana. Abismo Negro ? (that guy passed away over a year ago) La Parka ? (there like 5 Parka`s right now) and the other guys are noting but a bunch of WWE Superstar wannabes...where's El Santo, Blue Demon, Tinieblas Jr., Super Porky...those are real mexican wrestlers not those clowns from AAA, they wrestle in a freakin' octagon FFS !!! im sorry guys but as a mexican who still enjoys REAL mexican wrestling I have to say "thanks, but no thanks" AAA`s nothing but a pile of horse crap...

@Glade_Gnarr. agreed. we need more developers from all over the world. with so many developing houses going out of business left and right, it doesn't hurt to have others join the gaming business.

  • Yomigaeru

    Posted Apr 8, 2010 8:39 pm GMT

Now this is a pleasant surprise. Lucha libre has always seemed more interesting to me, especially with the deep cultural significance of the sport.

I've only seen a handful of matches, and am unfamiliar with the names, but that could be a plus. With the unknown comes skepticism, but by the same token you don't have any stigmas attached that you might have with more familiar brands like WWE and TNA.

...and as an added bonus for me, no John Cena. I have nothing against him personally, but he strikes me as a boring wrestler.

Here's to the absence of boring and infantile WWE plotlines. Cheers, friends.
