Order of War deploys Sept. 22

Square Enix and Wargaming.net's large-scale WWII-based RTS arrives for PC later this month.

Square Enix has made a significant push to capture Western gamers of late. In April 2009, Square Enix picked up British publisher Eidos, bringing such Western-oriented properties as Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Thief in-house. However, the publisher has also formed a number of partnerships with outside developers, signing on for Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander 2 and handing over Front Mission Evolved to Irvine, California-based Double Helix.

This week, Square Enix attached a date to the first Western-developed title that it will publish, Wargaming.net's Order of War. The World War II-based real-time strategy game will be available for the PC in North America on September 22.

Order of War presents both sides of the war in Europe, giving gamers the ability to control Allied and Axis forces during the pivotal summer of 1944. Players can command up to 1,000 units, consisting of ground troops, tanks, APCs, artillery, and aircraft. The game also offers two single-player campaigns, as well as online multiplayer modes.

A single-player demo for Order of War is available through the game's official Web site. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of the game.

las_nudas - hahaha..ahh i needed a good laugh. Have you actually played the demo mate?
Strategic planning?...Not quite, you can only move your tanks around in groups of 5..Good luck flanking the enemy like that.
Then there is the fact that tanks have health bars and infantry have unlimited ammo...This is never a good sign as it's extremely obvious the game will be as arcade-style as an RTS can get.

Not to mention the corny "cinematic camera" mode which takes away your control and forces you to watch it play out like some lame attempt at re-creating a war film with cartoon soldiers.
Why on earth add a function like this unless they are trying to say that your attention isn't always necessary.

Obviously it's just my own opinion, but i can't see OoW fitting into any category for war-gamers.
It's not original, it has nothing new or fascinating to offer. It's all been seen before, and in much better quality i might add.

It will eventually be played by people when it reaches the bargain bins of their local stores. (or steam)

OoW looks great with its focus on strategic planning (not resource harvesting or base-building). Gonna try these large-scale WiC battles.

Looks like a cross between the World War II style of CoH and the grandeur of WiC. Could be good, but I don't know. Either way, there's no way my compy is gonna be able to handle that.

@Chokipez I agree with you on that, but at the same time, it would be nice to see them actually put their Final Fantasy VIII on the PC. We PC gamers need more love from them. Last Remenant is cool, but now we need more from them.

Some people need to learn the difference between publishing and producing.

Oh man, a competitor for Company of Heroes.

Square Enix is making a pretty big gamble with their opening move. I would have gone with SupCom 2 first, personally.

Or maybe bring back Thief or Hitman. That would sell well.

Too much world of war 2 games. Company of heroes already set the bar pretty high on RTS on WWII, dont think square can do better.

Video looks very similar a Discovery broadcast - documentary, but very rapidly, like action movie.

Order of War looks great, though i wasn't impressed by the demo either. But I still gonna buy it cuz demo is just demo. Massive battles set up on huge maps - that's what I expect from the game.

I wasn't impressed with the Demo at all. Same decade old ideas being polished for new hardware. EH, don't know if this will be something I will remember being around a month from now.

This might still be worth checking out, the graphics are decent and it could still be a fun game..But the demo left the impression that this wasn't anything new.

To those thinking this is a RTT - You are in for a nasty shock.
This game is simply another generic WW2 RTS game. Arcadey as they come.
Tanks have health bars, and if the demo is anything to go by, they are moved around in squads only...
It's hardly tactical when you have to approach with multiple tanks and can't split up the group to flank the enemy instead (which is what you'd do in..any other game)

I admit i may of missed a few things in the demo, i didn't play it a second time.

The cinematic camera mode was a big let down too.
It's a game that spent alot of time making it look "pretty" but the gameplay seems to have suffered because of it.

Square Enix didn't produce this game. They're publishing it. They did the same thing for Project Silpheed for the XBOX 360..and they're doing it for the release of Modern Warfare 2 in Japan.

SalarianChemist, i don't think it will help all that much. the games are geared to 2 very different gamers. Halo the FPS fan console gamer, this one to the RTS PC gamer.

September 22 is the same day Halo 3: ODST is released.

Believe it or not, I actually think this will help Order of War from Square Enix. Normally, I think it's not a good idea for certain high-profile games to try and compete against other high-profile games. But when a lesser known game like Order of War is being released, people might actually notice it while standing in line waiting to purchase Halo 3: ODST.

I especially think this might be true because the Real-Time Strategy genre has gained so much popularity this generation. Halo Wars is a really popular RTS, so it probably isn't an accident that Order of War is launching on the same day as Halo 3: ODST.

Square Enix publishing COD, now Order of War... whats next?? World of Warcraft? I still always picture Final Fantasy games when I think of Square if not some other type of JRPG... its still a bit bizarre seeing them thinking outside of the box.
