120GB PS3 Slim confirmed by K-mart, Sears

[UPDATE] Hours before Sony's GamesCom press conference, the US retailer begins taking preorders for long-rumored console; FYE shows 80GB going to $299, 160GB to $399; September launch now confirmed.

Following a series of markdowns of current PlayStation 3s in the US and Europe, yet more evidence is mounting that a cheaper PlayStation 3 Slim will be announced shortly. Just hours before Sony's GamesCom press briefing was slated to begin in Cologne, Germany, US retailer K-mart began taking preorders for the console.

K-mart is running banner ads that indicate the console will be cheaper than its base model's current $399 price point. The site is currently hosting a banner ad that trumpets that "THE RUMORS ARE REALITY" and that there is a "new low price & a new and exciting PlayStation 3."

Meanwhile, the retailer's online store has a "Sony PS3, SLIM PRESELL 2" product page, which lists the console as having the 120GB hard drive first shown in images that surfaced in May:

PS3, SLIM High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience. Free PLAYSTATION Network membership. 120GB HDD for downloading games, music, videos, and photos. Includes DUAL SHOCK 3 controller. HDMI output for 1080p resolution. (emphasis added.)

The site also lists the 120GB PS3 Slim as shipping on August 24. Rival retailer Sears has also posted a "Sony PS3, SLIM PRESELL 1" product page with the same release date.

Meanwhile, game blog Kotaku was sent scans of in-store posters for retailer FYE that trumpet the "new low price" of both existing PS3 models--$299 for the 80GB stand-alone and $399 for the 160GB Uncharted bundle.

[UPDATE] Sure enough, Sony made it official in Cologne: A new, matte-black 120GB PS3 Slim will go on sale the first week of September for $299 (US & Canada) or €299 (EU).

    Less then three years and were about to see the sixth PS3 and their is a rumor of a 250gig PS3 that is going to be released.

    I dont feel the need to buy one because there will probably be two other versions released next year.

    meh...its a stationary console, who cares if its slimmer? Maybe Sony should save some of that money and put it towards more games for the system...or a controller designed to fit in a normal persons hands!

    A bit ugly but cheap and small enough to fit in small places. My 80GB PS3 takes up a lot of space and I have to connect and disconnect all the cables whenever I want to play or put it away. Only thing left for me to do now is to see how things will heat up.

    Not sure how many realize this, but Sears and K-Mart are both owned and operated by Sears Holdings Corp. Naturally if one has it listed on their web-page (As a mistake or not) the other would also show it. They are not competitors unless you count inter-company competition.

    ps3 wasnt that expensive to begin with since buying an xbox360 and getting only some of the features like the ps3 would be expensive like the HDD , external dvd player wireless, rechargeable controllers so now theres a ps3 slim with 120 gb and its smaller and lighter what more could u want ?

    @awheaten FPS has his moment's but it gets boring after the first time you finished the game, but the Ps3( i am a fanboy ) has different type's of games using the Blue-ray, but they should make more games using it
    Blue-ray should be an awesome long game, not all animations like Killzone

    That's a good question
    @UnknownForm

    If all you like is FPS then get more stuff for your 360. But, if you like weird different kind of japanesse games. Then, help your self to a PS3.

    I know this is being nit picky but gamespot made a slight mistake in the article k-mart and sears are not rivals. K-Mart and sears are the same company. Anyway good for sony on the slim PS3 I would like to see the console wars tighten up a bit because good competition makes for better gaming experiences for us because each are trying to out do the other. If one gets too far ahead of the other then the leader starts slacking.

    And how about you leave your right wing ranting to the FOX"news" website. The unemployment rate in my state is 10.7%, it is almost 20% in Michigan. Just because one cannot afford $300 on a toy at the moment does not mean that one is unemployed and the fact that one is unemployed does not mean that one doesn't want to get a job. In fact, the unemployment rate reflects the percentage who WANT work, but cannot get it.

    @starbead

    Okay then.

    ---

    @toughtommy2

    Basically up to you, but I'd go for PS3, doesn't really matter whether original or slim. It's all about how you like it by outlook and size between the original and slim.

    Anyway. Great pricepoint, Sony. MS will have to show that they are the better value or undercut it. Sony is bleeding red ink and can't really afford this steep a cut. Will be interesting to see if MS is willing to let the Elite go toe-to-toe with the Slim or uses its more solid financial position to try and crush the PS3.

    I actually really like the new look of the Slim PS3. Looks great, you won't have all the smudge marks with the new finish, and it won't take up the space. All that matters is that it delivers awesome games and a Blu Ray. I hope this puts Sony back on the map and in the forefront. Most of all, I hope they have learned their lesson and they stay in a good price range whenever the next gen consoles come again. For now, I will be loving my new PS3!

    Glossy is yesterday dude. It's old and needs to be put down. Apple is moving to Matte, DSi is moving to Matte, now PS3 is moving to Matte. Piano finish gloss, is no longer the cool thing. IBM had it right all along, Thinkpad Matte is far classier than gloss. I've been waiting for the day that Matte makes a comeback, now it's finally here.

    They're already packing the Elite with two games. Oh yeah, it's the Elites made last year that have the higher tendancy of RRoD failure. Now both the Wii and PS3 are better buys than the 360. Hopefully by next March when I really look to get a 360 (for Champions Online) they will have produced a mildly stable piece of electronics...I hope.
