Dark Void due in 2010, 2 million sales targeted

Capcom confirms its sci-fi PC, PS3, and 360 action game has slipped out of the increasingly sparse holiday season; publisher predicts game will go double-platinum its first year.

Dark Void has joined the 2009 Dropouts' Club. As part of an earnings report this morning, Capcom confirmed that the sci-fi actioner, first announced in October 2007 for a winter 2008 release, will not arrive until early 2010. It is now set to ship in North America and Europe for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 during the January-March quarter, the last of its publisher's fiscal year.

"Dark Void is moving into Capcom's fiscal Q4 in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season and to allow the development team more time to polish and enhance the game experience," a rep told GameSpot. The company predicts that the move will help the game hit a first-year sales target of 2 million units worldwide on all platforms.

Dark Void is the first project from developer Airtight Games, home to several veterans of the shuttered FASA Studios (Crimson Skies). The third-person shooter will have players engage in fast-paced vertical combat (see video below) courtesy of in-game jetpacks. It sees mankind fighting The Watchers, an alien race banished by humanity to an alternate universe after its members developed superpowers. As outlined in GameSpot's recent hands-on preview from the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game will see the Watchers return to extract their revenge.

Dark Void is the latest postponement of a triple-A title from a major publisher. Other recent delays from 2009 to 2010 include Sega's Bayonetta, Activision's Singularity, Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2, and Take-Two's Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II, and BioShock 2. However, the first quarter has proved a lucrative release window for Capcom in the past, with such hits as Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and Resident Evil 4 all debuting during the January-March period.

Why does almost every developer keep pushing their game's release date til next year? It's just stupid. We want their games now!

If all the developers keep postponing their games to next year jan-march then next year will be crowded as well.

...first announced in October 2007 for a winter 2008 release...

Wow. Two years later, and then it releases? They must be spending a lot of time polishing the game. :rolls eyes: How could they ever think it was going to release in 2008? Anyway, the game looks good, and I don't even care about the release date. I'm going to be buying it anyway. This looks awesome!

Is this the game that started off as a tech demo, and then was converted to a game based on the potential they saw in the demo?

It's a good move on Capcom's part. The devs will have time to actually finish the game and the game won't get lost amid the Christmas hubbub.

I think so, seeing how your checking up on the game Im sure this is not the first time you seen it but your tripping, this s@#% looks off the chain, esp. the hijacking ufo part I think you might need to go make your own games or something better

Im interested solely because of the jetpack aspect, which simply adds an extra dimension to the gameplay dynamic, as oppsed to simple, run-cover-gun etc.

Yeah let us not forget that Capcom predicted much bigger numbers for Bionic Commando and look how far that went. 2 million in one year? Not going to happen. Another trite third person game with a science fiction setting, really gonna break the bank on that one.

I'm actually kind of glad about this delayed release.

With Halo 3: ODST in September, GTA: Ballad of Gay Tony and Brutal Legend in Rocktober (assuming Double Fine wins out over Activision in the now infamous lawsuit), and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in November, I'm going to have a busy holiday season as it is.

@NukkU: No, you are in fact NOT the only one who thinks this game looks "dumb", but I'll amend your comment with the word "gimmicky." Just looks like a mess at this point, and the "shooting from ledge" animations look completely awful.

I think Capcom should drop Grin from their payroll. They developed the Bionic Commando remake(3D version) and boy did it suck! Those radiation boundaries in BC were aweful, so I'm glad to see a different developer like Airtight games behind this one.

    @ Humorguy_basic

Bro everyone's sayin that 2008 is comparable. I see critics and the gamer community saying so. So far we only seen a little bit of what 2010 is going to bring us and to us it seems like a lot. I mean look at the upcoming titles in Q1- Splinter Cell: conviction, Darksiders: Wrath of War, God of War 3, Dante's Inferno, Bayonetta, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, MAG, and Heavy Rain. If u ask me thats almost a dozen right there and not even halfway through the year. plus dont be a pessimist Im just trying to bring people's hopes up about what we going to get in the future.

I've seen the build for this game and know one of the designers for it and I can tell you all you will be blown away once the game comes out. The depth of story is there and the action will blow your mind. Think Crimson Skies with jetpacks and aliens with updated amazing graphics.

Uh, Dark Void was supposed to come out at the end of Sep, since when is that holiday time? Anyway, still plenty of good games coming out starting next month and going thru till at least Nov. Borderlands is my top pick for the 2nd half of 2009.

  • Cowboy-Bebop

    Posted Jul 30, 2009 4:53 pm PT

I wasn't too concerned about this moving since I figured it a rental at best, but what the heck is going on with game companies moving games out of the holiday season. Is MW2 really that much of a scary beast that you don't think your games will sell? With everyone moving their games until after the holidays thats not gonna leave THAT much money to spread around on all the games that have moved. I mean BioShock 2 is a definite no matter when it comes out and maybe Splinter Cell but the others I don't really care about. Thats a lot of games piling up after the big (now little) holiday season. I don't think this will help their sales at all even if the economy bounces back in the spring.

Never expect sells, I mean 2 million? C'mon. I am glad many A games are coming in 2010 and Q3-4 2009. But anywayz look at CoD MW 2, they expect 11M sells within 3 monhts, c'mon.
