Big in Japan: Dragon Quest IX goes triple platinum
Square Enix DS role-playing game approaches 3 million mark in second week as Konami's latest baseball game Pro Yakuu Spirits 6 comes out swinging.
After Dragon Quest IX sold a staggering 2.3 million copies on its first week of sale in Japan, there was little doubt that the Square Enix role-playing game was beginning an extended stay near the top of the sales charts. Tracking firm Media Create today released its sales figures for the week of July 13-19, and Dragon Quest IX pushed its two-week total to nearly 3 million by selling an additional 612,671 copies.
As for new releases, Konami's Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6 for the PlayStation 3 took the second spot on the charts, selling nearly 74,000 copies in its debut week. The PlayStation 2 edition of the long-running baseball sim was no slouch either, taking fifth with just under 50,000 sold.
The only other newcomer to the charts finished a distant sixth behind the PS2 edition of Pro Yakyuu. Ys I & II Chronicles for the PSP, a remake of the first two installments in the Falcom RPG series, sold through 18,660 copies for the week.
On the portable front, there was little change to the status quo. The DSi dominated the competition with nearly 97,000 units sold, as the PSP lagged in second with just over 24,000 systems sold. Likely aided by Dragon Quest IX, the DS Lite continued its recent resurgence, finishing in fourth with nearly 10,000 sold.
There was a slight bit of movement in the home consoles, but only at the bottom. The Wii again topped the set-top systems with 20,807 sold, well ahead of the PS3's 8,865 tally. And even though the PS2 sales dropped slightly week-over-week to 3,352, that was still enough to push the Xbox 360 to the bottom of the charts, with just 2,899 systems sold.
