11 million heed Call of Duty: World at War

What might be Activision and Treyarch's last shooter set during World War II mows down another retail milestone.

During its quarterly earnings call last month, Activision Blizzard revealed that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare--likely the last Call of Duty game developed by Infinity Ward-- had sold 13 million units worldwide. Last week, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey predicted that its sequel/spin-off, Modern Warfare 2--which has "taken on a life of its own" outside the COD franchise--will sell even faster, moving just over 11 million units in two months.

Today, Activision announced another Call of Duty game has sold 11 million units--in seven months. According to the official Call of Duty: World at War Web site, the well-reviewed first-person shooter hit the impressive milestone the week after its second downloadable map pack was released. The first map pack, which has sold over 2 million units, went live on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in March.

As part of Activision's developer-alternating strategy, Call of Duty: World at War was developed by Santa Monica, California-based Treyarch (Quantum of Solace). With Infinity Ward now focused on Modern Warfare 2 (and its inevitable sequels), Treyarch has apparently taken over the Call of Duty series, which will reportedly leave World War II behind. Unconfirmed leaks have the well-into-development project--code-named "Call of Duty 7"--being set during the Cold War in such conflict zones as Vietnam, Cuba, and postcolonial Africa.

Call of Duty is currently available for the DS, Wii, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more on the latter three versions of the game, check out the video review below.

This game irritates me because mostly american servers are rated G no swearing. They say kids play this game. That is B S. you can simulate realistic murder but you can't swear which they do on the game that is rated ma for mature. We are now trained to censor each other land of the free, my rectum chute. Beyond that this is the buggest game know to man. That hasn't fixed itself in a year what a joke guess they already got my money why should they care. I hope they fire Treyarch. I'm boycoting them. But I will play this one last Gayarch trademarked garbage cuz like I said they already have my money.

to me MW2 looks like a new 007 game? with all the gadgets and etc.

The best improvement that World at War had over any other Call of Duty game was the decapitations. It would kind of suck if MW2 didn't include it. It gives it a better feel of realism. It does to me, anyways.

If they keep making them like they do, but adding more and more improvements along the way, i'll be a COD customer for a very, very long time.

"Obviously the fact that these games are released for the Nintendo DS, Wii, PS2 and PC are what really help drive these sales numbers up."

actually the PS2, Wii, and DS versions of Waw only sold contributed around 2million of the 11 million sold.
its really the console version you look for.

"It's pretty scary to think about the type of sales numbers a game series like Halo would reach if it were released for the Nintendo DS."
    Halo for the DS..... No....

world at war is no improvement to cod 4
all treyarch did was copy infinity ward cause they used the same engine. cod 4 is better than world at war

infinity ward should be the only company making cod games.
modern warfare 2 is basically call of duty

The cold war wasn't a "war", but many conflicts resulted from it...the Korean War (which almost provoked an American conflict with China), the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam Conflict, Iran/Iraq conflict, and Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (where we sold weapons to bin Laden in order for his troops to defend against the USSR)...taking the game to the Cold War era could have tons of possibilities.

WaW was a refreshing change of pace from CoD4 whole waiting for MW2. I didn't find it to be as memorable or fun, and I'm tired of the setting, but it was a VERY well made game with excellent gameplay. Not my taste, but it filled a gap between games.

Grats to Infinity Ward. I love CoD 4 and WaW. Both great games, I seem to enjoy WaW better than CoD 4 and no, its not because of the zombies . Just little better "improvements" over CoD4

  • Cicatraz_ESP

I enjoyed MW the most, but WaW was good. Also, in regards to Treyarch: I thought CoD3 was a very enjoyable game. Not as good as 2, but it wasn't as bad as its being penned.

I prefer Modern Warfare. However I liked World at War. CoD 3 was horrible. I have no problem with future treyarch CoD's if they resemble WaW. I am waiting for MW2. Seems like it can't come out soon enough!

good job treyarch, leave WW2 alone for a few years and then come back with a new refreshed look and maybe even make it possible to create a "what if" game where you can also play as the axis while they're winning. can't wait to see how cold war will be, should be interesting

  • Ystergarde

    Posted Jun 16, 2009 11:32 pm PT

World War 2 isn't old, it's just the battles that's getting old. Why not play in the Italian front for a bit, or even from the perspective of the Axis.

I like the direction they are going to take CoD in. Modern Warfare is outstanding, its sequel will be as well I think, and addressing the events of the Cold War will be a breath of fresh air for first person shooters. I think we can all agree that WWII is too often the setting for many genres of games. I'm glad Treyarch is putting that to rest. Give WWII a break for a few years. However, I would like to see more interesting takes on the time period like Velvet Assassin tried to do, hopefully with greater success.

@Monkeypants13, I agree with your post about Maayla81. I read your post and I had to scroll down to read his, after reading it I figured I would view his profile because his comments about the Hitler pic and Iraq made no sense. So after viewing his profile I had to chuckle because he states that a Hitler pic is offensive but when you look @ his profile and click on about me it says "ask ya momma". That seems a little offensive you think.

Good to hear, but I wonder if they've made any profit yet? According to another topic on this site it takes almost 60 million in dev costs for some AAA games. I think Treyarch has improved greatly on their installments, which I thought COD3 was decent, but not great. I also liked Quantam of Solace, but it was a little short and multi-player was weak.

Well COD started out on the PC so saying that it was a part of those consoles was kinda...weird? lol anyways I wouldn't think of COD as a system seller more like SYSTEMS seller =-P

    @CoolGuyUsername
Have you even read the article? It says the reported direction of 'COD 7' is; "being set during the Cold War in such conflict zones as Vietnam, Cuba, and postcolonial Africa." America and Russia supported/funded different conflicts around the globe. This is why america managed to help Osama bin Laden to get into a position to do the things he and his organisations have.

@SalarianChemist halo would also never go multi other than pc because its owned by microsoft. that's why sony was retarded for losing the gta series to multiplatform. other than mgs and god of war, i don't see the point of my ps3.

  • SalarianChemist

It's pretty scary to think about the type of sales numbers a game series like Halo would reach if it were released for the Nintendo DS. But, Halo is one of those game series that helps sell systems, so it is a better idea to keep it only on Xbox 360.
