PS3 expands Greatest Hits offerings

Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank Future, Army of Two among half-dozen catalog titles given new $29.99 price point.

While next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009 is set to give gamers a peek at the biggest releases of holiday 2009 and beyond, they might need something to tide them over in the meantime. To that end, Sony today announced the latest additions to its PlayStation 3 budget-conscious line of Greatest Hits titles, games from years past that have "reached a significant sales threshold," according to the company.

Sony is adding six games to its line of $29.99 Greatest Hits: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Battlefield: Bad Company, Army of Two, Devil May Cry 4, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Those titles are still available in their standard releases, but the Greatest Hits-branded versions will begin to arrive in stores June 16.

This is the second batch of PS3 titles to be dubbed Greatest Hits, bringing the catalog of budget blockbusters up to 16 games. Sony revealed the first wave--including titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Resistance: Fall of Man--at its 2008 E3 media briefing. They were easy to spot on store shelves because the Greatest Hits editions came in eye-catching red-tinted Blu-ray cases.

FINALLY SONY i've been waiting for this for sooo long, the last time you expanded the list was a year ago, BUT WHERE IS UNCHARTED, that should seriously be there, even GTA4 cuz that game came out before MSG4 and has all the right to be on there, hell replace Army of 2 with GTA4

You are wrong metal gear solid 3 subsistance was NEVER on the x box. The only mgs game on the x box was substance. The whole mgs series has been on a playstation conlsole so it is a sony game. There have only been 2 mgs games on another conlsole mgs 2 substance and the mgs the twin snakes. If you include the new one it is 3 but it is still on the playstation.

yay for more "greatest hits" that are already lower than $29.99 everywhere. The only game that wasn't was R&C. Are they too incompetent to find out that their so-called GH are already lower than $30. Plus didn't GT5: prologue already was around $30. LOL!

And also...YAY for more ugly looking red boxes. I am just gonna go and find a copy of MGS4 before they put that awesome game in an ugly red box.

"The whole MGS franchise from MGS1-MGS4 is the best game ever produced for all the SONY PS consoles."

you are wring about because the remake of mgs1 was on the gamecube and mgs2 was on xbox and mgs3 subsistence was also on xbox.

The whole MGS franchise from MGS1-MGS4 is the best game ever produced for all the SONY PS consoles.
I just wish every game is like MGS..... After playing MGS1 on PS1.... no other game could match it until MGS2 on PS2.... and then MGS3....
Now that I've played MGS4 on the PS3.... there isnt any other game that I'm really interested in playing as much as MGS4.... I just hope Kojima makes MGS5 and continue on the franchise... or at least make more games like MGS!!!
Kojima has increased the standard in stealth action games, I remember playing Splinter Cell... and got bored of it after the first mission.... Nothing really compares to MGS!!!
I brought my PS2 becoz of MGS2 and my PS3 becoz of MGS4...
    Respect to Kojima!

Ha! Battlefield: Bad Company and Army of Two are under $20 at Walmart.com and Walmart stores now. So making it a Greatest Hits game INCREASES the price? Way to go, Sony!!! EA was probably the consultant on this move.

ryan69969, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is already a Greatest Hits title, already got it in a red case, and damn, it actually looks good in it's red case, one of those instances where I've gotta say it looks better that way as opposed to the original clear case.

Just in time for the E3 announcement of MGS4: Substansistance.

I agree more titles would do well as Greatest Hits: Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots for $29.99? Sounds good to me! I'll be sure to pick it up. I am a little disappointed that Uncharted isn't on that list, but I'm sure it'll come to pass soon enough.

I root around for the best deals for games so it is pretty easy to find those games for less than that already, brand new. Still, to those people who don't root around these are a good deal and would make a fine addition to a games collection.

Metal gear solid for $30. that should put some butts in the seats. This for any gamer is simply highway robbery. Now a price drop is what sony really needs but it is a step in the right direction to just mark down a game that could have been $60 for another year or two like they did with uncharted. Then again it is in the 160 GIG package. Otherwise that is the only title on this list with the exception of R&C tools of destruction.

MGS4 is pretty much the only game worthwhile for putting on the "greatest hits" list, at least in terms of price. Every other game in this new batch can usually be found on sale for AT LEAST that cheap. Usually much cheaper. Heck, there's been multiple times were I've seen DMC4 going for $9.99 and BF:BC going for under $20. The other games I see usually hovering between $25-30. So, really the only benefit of this is those that don't look for sales. Which, I suppose there are some people out there that aren't as money conscious...or don't like looking/waiting for sales.

Its a pretty crappy list. GT Prologue for $30, it was only $40 when released so $10 is an insult, that one should have went to $20. Devil May Cry 4 went for $10 in Best Buy's big game sale in April. Where are games like Bioshock, Uncharted and others, i'm sure they sold many, many copies to qualify for Greatest Hits status. I want to play Bioshock on PS3 even though I already played and beat it a few times on 360. In this economy, if Sony really wanted to be successful, they would do something like temporarily lower their part of the licensing fees and sell their games for $5 cheaper than 360 or give the option to just download new games so there are no shipping/disc production costs and sell it for like $10 cheaper. I would love to just download the latest and greatest on day/date release date with retailers while saving a few bucks in the process. Sony will overtake 360 by the time all is said and done, as the console really is great and 360 is starting to show it's age, but that still doesn't change much because I will still buy every multi-console release on 360 instead of PS3 because I like points towards my Gamerscore over the pathetic Trophy system. Home is starting to mature and it really is going to be something special in the end that MS and Nintendo will end up HAVING to copy in one form or another in future generations of their consoles.

It's annoying that EU and US get different Platinum/Greatest Hits titles.
Uncharted is at a discount price over here, but games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma are still as expensive as new release games.

I can finally get my hands on RACHET and CLANK. My strategy is working now, just wait for a few months or a year for the price to go down. So as BIOSHOCK. When they first came out their prices were $59 and up, the used ones were $45 and up. So waiting for the price to drop is really worth it. Saves you money too. Dont worry about not playing it right away. CHEERS!! ;o)

    @ theodosis21r

You really think Sony makes any money on the PS3, or any console for that matter? That's just not how consoles work man. Nearly every console (except the Wii) gets sold for much less than it takes to make them so the company takes a big loss. They make this money back by selling as many games as they can.

  • Steveo1313

    Posted May 28, 2009 5:12 pm PT

    @ theodosis21r
plasticbox is right, sony has been selling the ps3 at a loss for a while because they had to compete with the xbox's and wii's lower price points. over time, as the price of the hardware in the ps3 get cheaper, sony starts to lose less money for each system, eventually breaking even. microsoft had to do this for a little bit, but the cost to make an xbox eventually got cheap enough that microsoft began to make a profit for each xbox sold. so there.

  • MarcRecon

    Posted May 28, 2009 4:59 pm PT

Smart move by making those AAA games budget titles...considering they are not dropping the price on the PS3 anytime soon.

  • theodosis21r

    Posted May 28, 2009 4:43 pm PT

plasticbox1990 I dont think any reasonable company would sell it's product without having profits! and you are telling us that sony is selling ps3 and has losses on every ps3 sold, it's not even funny man. I pitty you

  • Eazy1891

    Posted May 28, 2009 4:42 pm PT

@munkeypoo45: than you have to reccomend it to everyone who asks or has a PS3 and when they dont have a PS3 yet tell them buy the 160 GB version so it comes with that...teell them if they do buy it buy the new version and not the used...that'll help...Uncharted is a great game, it was the first game i bought for my PS3 and if someone doesnt have it and needs a game to enjoy and get soe pretty good decently easy trophies in the process then Uncharted is a game you have to have...
