BioShock 2 due November 3

2K Marin-developed sequel to critical and commercial undersea action RPG will surface this fall; EU/UK release planned for October 30.

Other than better-than-expected earnings and lowered fiscal-year guidance, today's Take-Two Interactive earnings call was chock-full of major news items. The New York City-based publisher used the call to reveal that the second Grand Theft Auto IV expansion, The Ballad of Gay Tony, would arrive this fall as both a digital download and part of a stand-alone retail compilation. It also delayed two of its biggest 2009 releases, Red Dead Redemption and Mafia II, until sometime between November 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010. Finally, Take-Two announced that NBA 2K10 would return to the Wii, and that its MLB 2K series has been taken over by NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts.

Besides all that, Take-Two imprint 2K Games has finally dated BioShock 2, the forthcoming sequel to its critically hailed undersea action role-playing game from 2007. The game's official Web site is now touting that the game will ship on October 30 internationally and on November 3 in North America simultaneously for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It has not yet been officially rated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, but will almost certainly bear an M-for-Mature sticker like its forbearer.

Developed by 2K Marin, BioShock 2 has the rare distinction of being both a sequel and prequel to BioShock. As outlined in GameSpot's recent preview, the single-player campaign is set roughly 10 years after the events in the first game. Players return to the undersea realm of Rapture, donning the diving boots of a prototype "Big Daddy" caught up in a wave of kidnappings by a new creature: the "Big Sister." By contrast, the game's multiplayer component will be set before the internecine conflict that turned the utopian Rapture into a very dystopian place.

In addition to the date reveal, 2K Games has relaunched its teaser site for BioShock 2, Somethinginthesea.com. A rep for the company promised that the site, which revealed the game's aquatic kidnap-spree setup, would be the site of "exciting new updates" in the coming weeks.

    @UbdU
it wont affect single player at all, they are using a different developer to make the multiplayer. Genius idea IMO, hope other developers take note.

Here's hoping the work on the multiplayer doesn't detract from the single-player experience.

If anyone wants a good preview of the multiplayer component, check out this months PC Gamer. They have like a 5 page spread on it. It will be partly story driven, as you have your own apartment and such, so I'll probably just play it with friends who will like the story aspects as much as I do.

I don't think the multiplayer is going to be too story driven. I think the multiplayer will just be set before Bioshock so we get to see what Rapture will be like before it goes to hell. It will just be what the maps will look like.

If I'm wrong and it is story driven then I hope co-op is in there. I haven't even read the preview yet so what do I know...

@Ziloron - I rarely give anyone, especially companies the benefit of the doubt. Call me heartless, but this way I rarely get disappointed. If it doesn't live up to what I really wanted, I'm not shocked. But if it does I get to be very impressed.

I'm sure I'll pick it up and play it, but I find my Single player experiences get more plays over the decades (important distiction) than my multiplayer stuff... Hopefully the prequel allows multiplayer, but isn't required to play through it.

  • Ziloron

    Posted May 27, 2009 8:59 am PT

@raahsnavj I agree with you, but Take-Two seems to be really serious about this game. Give them the benefit of the doubt for now, because you can never know until you experience the game.

  • raahsnavj

I still feel they are shorting the franchise by having the prequel part of it multiplayer... I would much rather have both parts as single player, if they are remotely story driven.

Then tack on some multiplayer (if they are forced by the publisher and lame reviewers that think it needs it) as an after thought anywhere in the storyline. When you get into the multiplayer no one is going to care about the storyline anyhow and instead just start throwing racial slurs around anyhow.

I don't know, maybe it will be coop and an interesting prequel, but I still feel like forcing it to be multiplayer is shortsided...

Look frickin' AMAZING, Bioshock is such a hard game to follow, but, I think they're going to do their best.

I hope hacking becomes a little more useful though, I always felt like my turrets didn't even help.

Looks great! You can count on my 70 bucks! However I'm afraid this is only going to disappoint anyone who loved the first game as much as I did. Game length? Weopon varieties? Different ammunition? Invent stations? Hacking turrets, cameras? All the other attributes, tonics?
As far as I'm concerned protecting the little sisters was a pain in the a$$, at the end of the 1st game, but I'll remain optimistic. I'm enjoying my summer so I can wait for this game, and fall.

Oh my god, learn how to write a damn news story. You don't even MENTION what the headline is about until half-way down the page.

When you have "Bioshock due November 3" as your headline, you shouldn't spend the first half of the story banging on about fiscal reports and other unrelated news items. This is exactly what you've done. Maybe I should just be thankful the headline wasn't "Bioshock 2 shocking gamers November 3" or another of your usual god-awful puns. Google 'inverted pyramid' and get a clue, for christ's sake.
