Rockstar founders load 4mm

Jamie King, Gary Foreman join former Image Metrics, NBC executives on new interactive entertainment studio; two projects chambered.

Sam and Dan Houser may be the two most high-profile names to be associated with Rockstar Games, but the house that Grand Theft Auto built was actually founded by five people in total. Today, two of those founders--Jamie King and Gary Foreman--announced that they would be joining forces with former Image Metrics general manager Nicholas Perrett and NBC executive Paul Coyne to form a new development studio, 4mm Games.

King and Foreman will hold the positions of president and chief technical officer, respectively, at 4mm. Together, the two contributed to such acclaimed Rockstar franchises as Grand Theft Auto, Midnight Club, Max Payne, and Bully. Perrett will fill the role of chief executive officer, while Coyne will assume an executive vice president position. The independent studio is based in New York City, New York.

4mm did not detail its plans for the future, saying only that more information will be available in the coming weeks. However, studio founders did speak with Variety, revealing that the game maker's first efforts will be introduced through online mobile platforms like Apple's ubiquitous iPhone, before being adapted for Nintendo's, Microsoft's, and Sony's platforms.

According to the trade, 4mm has two unannounced titles currently in development, with the first expected to launch this year. As part of its announcement, 4mm said that it has entered into a multiyear, multigame financial partnership with investment firm CEA Autumn Games. Terms of the investment were not revealed.

    @bigelf72
    Not true. It uses OpenGL ES 2.0 to run games so its nothing like a PS2 infact its closer to a PSX in practice. Its a chip. A CPU, GPU, northbridge, southbridge all in one. The iphone actually uses OpenGL ES 1.1 so its nothing special.

    "online mobile platforms like Apple's ubiquitous iPhone, before being adapted for Nintendo's, Microsoft's, and Sony's platforms."

    So they plan to make a bunch of crappy games on iPhone. Then port them over and try to pass them off to us on the DS, psp and as DLC for the consoles.

    Giving the fact that a lot of mainstream gamers really are as dumb as ..... I'm sure 4mm will do well. Good business plan, *sniff* *sniff* the sweet scent of money. Shame it doesn't help the gaming industry. At all!

    Look up Nvidia Tegra. This phone will get released by HTC in the fall. Graphics: Similar to Playstation 2, 720p HDMI out, 5.0mp camera.

    Butbutbutbut... They'll still be with R* too, right??? Because as great as the Housers are, it's never good for a company when 2 founding members quit...

    @ Leinhartx damn straight. thats really what we need nowadays. Ppl just keep pushing out crap and all we want is for them to take their time and deliver a quality product. Quality over quantity.

    Sounds like they are upset for not getting due credit for founding Rockstar Games. Anyone remember Daikatana and it's founder of a new studio that I can't remember right now? Sounds like this will probably suffer a similar fate. Anyone remember a company called Rare? It's still called the same, it just doesn't make good games anymore. Similar stuff, it's not about who founded it or your past success, just what you have done lately.

    Reminds me of when a faction of Rare formed FreeRadical.. Let's hope 4mm don't meet the same fate.

    mrklorox: I, as well as many people, actually enjoy Crackdown immensely. I didn't buy it because of the Halo 3 beta but it didn't hurt that it came bundled with it. How could you not like an open world game where exploration on foot is more exhilirating than in a vehicle? I spent hours on end collecting those pesky orbs so that I could max my agility stats and jump sky scrapers with ease. To me, it sounds like you didn't give the game a proper chance and played the bare minimum, or simply jumped right into the Halo 3 beta. Crackdown is as fun as open world games get to me. Might I even add that inFamous would probably not be around if not for Crackdown? inFamous draws immense similarities to that game. Cut it some slack, it deserves respect for being more than just the game that came with a Halo 3 beta.

    Sigh... sick of people claiming to be the source of the goodness that is GTA. These people are just using the name to get themselves noticed. Look ta David Jones. His last game was all about cashing in on the GTA legacy, and it failed miserably. Sure the norms bought it, but they buy anything that has the least common denominator bundled with it at the time. At the time of Crackdown, that LCD was Halo.
