Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

I hope so Cuz I always and only buy COD games that Infinity Ward makes anyway since Treyarch only rips off IW's style every time and i can't take them seriously.Plus i'm sick and tired of WW2 based games.

a vietnam COD game would be tough, and I don't think they'll do it. The name of the game is Call of DUTY, not Call of Draft. Opinion of the Vietnam war was so negative, and the political subterfuge was so severe, that I don't think it can be glorified in the way that COD games do. I think a Cold War game where you play in some sort of rapid response squad (similiar to the squads in Rainbox 6, a multilateral force of NATO's best soldiers) and play out conflicts throughout the whole time period) Maybe...like a stealth mission in Cuba, pre-Bay of Pigs, an assasination or rescue in Vietnam, The Six-Day War, the Contras, Afghanistan (the soviet invasion, not ours) There are tons of conflicts from 1945-1990 that have never been used in video games that a history nerd like me would love to see!

I think that I could go with a Nam game, especially considering how few of them that are out there that are new and actually good. Vietcong was the only good one in my opinion.

It seems like everyone on the bandwagon hates on Treyarch, the past is the past and World at War was a solid game. IW may be a little more progressive but these guys are far from terrible and I'd love to see them handle Vietnam. I loved how certain aspects of World at War completely go for fun rather than practicality - for instance molotovs really aren't very good but they're hilarious, so is the sawed-off double barrel, and everybody gets a laugh out of zombie mode which totally pisses on historical fact.

Come to think of it they should either continue zombies in the next one or release it as it's own game one day, a whole paranormal zombie game with the same four douchebags of WWII.

This makes me sad, Ive played the COD series since the 1st PC game and I've always held out hoping that they would do more with the WW2 british campaigns, in particular the 1st and 6th airborne divisions. I.E. more normandy than just Pegasus bridge and how about someone finally making a decent go of Arnhem!!!! I Also felty Treyarch's decision to exclude a british campaign sucked ass too. I know theres a lot of stigma concerning WW2 games, but I think its lame, its still a valid and entertaining subject to some of us.
I'm concerned as to the playablility of a vietnam game in the COD world, firstly theyw ould have to put effort into making jungle combat effective in a computer game, in other Vietnam games I've played its been far from enjoyable if the jungle is realistic and unconvincing if it is playable (with the expetion of some areas in FC2) I dont want it to end up being linear which in treyarchs hands is a big possibility (COD 3?) and the complete antithesis of COD games.

not to burst your bubble pwnszord or "correct" you or anything, but the Bay of Pigs was a pretty open conflict CIA operatives were present at the time of the invasion and the Cuban Rebels were financed by the CIA...you also have open conflicts in East bloc states such as when Georgia(i might be wrong, could have been the ukraine) attempted to become a Democracy during the 1950's but the Soviets invaded and stuff. Basically if you want open conflicts with communists you have the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict which definitely part of the Cold War without a doubt. You also have the Israel/ Egyptian war during the 1970's were the communists were supplying Syria, Jordan and Egypt with new missle and anti air tech while the west was tryn to save Israel...Israel took the entire Sinai Penninsula from Egypt and pwned everyone into a stale mate despite being out numbered. There's tons of more conflicts that can be mentioned all diverse in locations and people involved. The Cold War is an excellent choice and potentially has the most to work with.

    thanks
ps sorry if any of that was already mentioned

Vietnam would probably work for COD game, true they haven't done great within other series, it has some potential. A game set specifically within the cold war era and those conflicts would be a flop. Part of the success with these games is that you can in part identify the conflicts with the most basic of historical knowledge (or in the event of Modern Warfare simply go along with the story they're presenting). But in the cold war just how many skirmishes did we have? How many times did we have open firefights with the Communists? I only know of one instance when we came close and even then we were both separated by a large mass of water. That doesn't mean I can't be wrong, not in the least, because as I said I am a casual student of history. But the way I envision it standing around in during the bay of pigs waiting for a conflict is not an exciting game. Sorry I just don't want to be a border guard in East Berlin.

So Treyarch Makes Garbage Games Huh? And No One Wants To Play Them? Well Thats Weird! Why is World At War Number one On the top 5 Games Played on Live? Why Has It sold Nearly As Much As Modern Warfare In Less than half the time? Answer These Simple Questions for me. Haters Really Need to Grow a Brain. Everyone seems to Pan any PC game set in NAM. Yes Men Of Valor could have been great if more effort was put into into it but it is still a decent game. Vietcong in my opinion is a great game but again could have been brilliant if some more development went into it.

Battlefield Vietnam isn't bad but keeps crashing on multiplayer and takes ages to load.

It is about time that a game the standard of Call of Duty or Meadl of Honour is applied to a Vietnam setting.

WWII will always sell but I think PC gamers want a new theatre of warfare like in Call of Duty Modern Warfare.

As a personal fan of that era I love watching Vietnam war films and playing games set in Vietnam.I only wish that there really was a gold standard that could be set for a tactical shooter set in Nam.

I'm glad the Call of Duty series is taking place in different eras beside World War II. But, how long will the series last? Whether CoD 7 takes place in Vietnam or during the Cold War, CoD 8 will be what CoD 7 wasn't. How much longer can they go after that?

They are obliviously not going to make games that are before World War II, so what could be left? I really like World at War though, even if it was made by Treyarch.

World at War is failing and no one wants to play. Ladders included. They can't even get someone to sponsor the new map packs for pc why. Because either they suck or they want too much money for it. If they do a cold war era Call of Duty they really should have the Afghan-Russian war, becuase the only FPS that did that was made by a Russian company called "The Truth About 9th Company" which I would love to get but I cant seem to find ANYWHERE. Probably the most elusive game I have ever come across. Gamespot dosn't even have it listed and Ive never seen it on Ebay.

Not being militarily fetishistic, blood lust whatever, there are many historic wars game developers may choose to pursue. The Korean war, Vietnam War, Soviet-Afghan... Or, have something fictional, like a modern war settled in the Korean region. There are many good ideas, which one would likely sell?

    Posted Jun 15, 2009 10:05 pm PT

Oh dear, battlefield 2 sold greatly even though many problems in the past and currently are at hand in Iraq, which the game is "likely set", forget the politics, these are video games made solely for entertainment, it is up to us whether we would attach something to it. Developers then should not mind making games at all, if what they matter most is profiteering. the old BFV was a great game in many respects, I wonder if ever activision wiill publish something that would come out at par with the BFV, Battlefield had always a wider field of gameplay due to its features (vehicles, wider arenas). But COD is entirely unique in itself.
