Fitzgerald, Polamalu share Madden NFL 10 cover

Electronic Arts was as much of a victim as anyone to the Brett Favre retirement controversy that dominated sports news headlines leading up to the 2008-2009 NFL season. After announcing that Favre would wear his hallmark Green Bay Packer uniform as the first retired player to feature on the cover of a Madden NFL game last year, EA was forced to completely rework the game's box art after the surefire Hall of Fame quarterback revealed that not only was he postponing retirement, but also switching teams to play for the New York Jets.

By comparison, EA's choice for an NFL all-star to cover this year's edition of the game seems as easy as tossing a touchdown to Randy Moss in single coverage. Today, EA Sports said that Super Bowl XLIII standouts Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu will both appear on the cover of Madden NFL 10 when it ships for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, and PSP on August 14. EA notes that Madden NFL 10 marks the first time that two athletes have appeared on the cover of the game since the franchise launched 21 years ago.

Larry Fitzgerald's appointment to the Madden NFL 10 cover makes him only the second player to appear on both the pro and collegiate editions of EA's annual gridiron sim, with the first being Shaun Alexander. As a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, Fitzgerald has been selected to appear in the Pro Bowl three times, taking home MVP honors in the 2009 game. The athletic wideout also set NFL postseason records for yards (542), receptions (30), and touchdowns (7) last year.

A five-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl Champion, Troy Polamalu led the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense in the team's Super Bowl XLIII championship run last season. During the season, the versatile safety recorded seven interceptions, 73 tackles, and tied the NFL record for most sacks by a safety in a single game (3).
