Fable II sells 2.6M, more DLC en route

Shooting down Fable III rumors, Microsoft confirms that a second download pack is on the way for Lionhead's fast-selling RPG.

On Tuesday night, BBC radio and television personality Jonathan Ross inadvertently found himself under the ever-feared gamers microscope. Posting on Twitter from the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts video game awards ceremony, Ross said that he had been "asked to do voice in Fable 3," sparking an Internet firestorm over the possibility that Lionhead Studios was already at work on a follow-up to the 2008 Xbox 360-exclusive Fable II. Ross later posted a retraction to his original statement, making a desperate plea for help in the process.

Today, Microsoft responded to the furor surrounding Ross' Twitter escapades. "We have no agreement in place with Ross to work on forthcoming projects," the Microsoft representative told GameSpot. "That said, it is true that we are not yet done with Fable II. We are working on additional content for Fable II. That's all we can say for now. We will have more to share soon!"

On its development blog, Lionhead also confirmed that it is working on additional downloadable content for Fable II. Following a short delay, the first Fable II DLC was released for 800 Microsoft points ($10) in January. As detailed in GameSpot's Reviews Blog, the add-on introduced the fabled Knothole Island--a once-tropical region now mysteriously encased in snow--extending the well-received role-playing game's storyline by several hours.

Lionhead also provided a brief sales update on Fable II, saying the game has now sold 2.6 million units. A month after its release, Microsoft announced that Fable II had officially become the "fastest-selling RPG on the Xbox 360," thanks to first-month sales of 1.5 million units.

    Knothole Island was great but I felt shortchanged by it. 10 bucks was a little steep for that much gameplay. I'm hoping this DLC will be longer and introduce new things.

    I'm glad to be getting new content but I hope they continue to patch the original game. There are still plenty of quirks that need to be addressed. I also hope the next DLC pack won't just be shooting metal plates in the air, but introduction of a new boss and maybe one or two new enemies? Larger Region? Whatever it is I'm sure I'll buy it, I just felt a little ripped off with Knothole Island.

    I liked Fable2. I didn't fall in love with the game, but I did like it. I don't have many rpgs for my 360 because there aren't a lot of real good ones out right now. I have Mass Effect, Oblivion, Tales of Vesperia, Enchanted Arms(Yuck), and Fable 2. I'm thinking of adding Star Ocean, but I'm still on the fence with that one. I wish Microsoft would lessen the cost of the 120gb hd, with all this DLC and all. I've gotten down to a measely 3.8gb left. And thats with only games saves and profile info.

    Is that all? I would have thought it would have sold more than under 3 M copies... i wonder how many copies they sold of the original fable. I was expecting around maybe 4.5 to 5 M copies by now. Nice to see theyre getting Fable 3 in line.

    360 Largest Market Is shooter, just look at Modern Warfare Picking up the Bafta fpr best game. The RPG market is always open, as long as there is games there will be different kinds of gamers. Lionhead have to have a sit down and long and hard on Fable 3, because the storyline was a bit of a let down in fable 2. Dont get me wrong still a good game, but for me wasnt as good as the first one.

    there haven't been many JRPGs released in N. America for one so camparing WRPGs to them is pointless.
    another point, 2.6 million sales after nearly five months is NO RECORD. fallout 3 sold 4.7 million in it's launching month.
    thirdly i think we all know that the 360s largest market is shooters man.

Besides WRPG are on the rise and they are doing better USA then JRPG, and that happens to be the 360's largest market. If anything is going to top Fable 2's speed selling record then it's The Elder Scrolls 5 but I doubt that will be a 360/PS3 game so Fable 2 will keep it's record." -Ronnet

    Absolutely it will. Although with both ESV and the next Xbox having a projected 2010 release date, it will probably be on the 360, if not both.

    i agree with ronnet, buy the time FF XIII is here, fable 2 will look dated and old. still, i might have to get the new DLC. any excuse to get some more gaming hours out of it!

    I doubt I will get their next DLC, I strongly disliked the first and found it extreemly overpriced aswell. Fable 2 isn't a lot of gameplay hours for your money either, atleast not for a RPG. And then they dare to release a download with 3 repetitive quests for 1/6 of the full games' price? I honestly think the horse armor in Oblivion was a better deal.

    Fable is a great game!!!
    I think its even better then FF and star ocean!!!
    In fable I really feel like I living inside those cities, I prefer Fable2 over FF because its more realistic and fun!!!

    Dreski its mainly because people return it after they beat the games story line, which is probably only 1/2 of the game. Its a fun game, don't make that a turn off. The only reason you don't see as many COD's or GoW or Halo's is because they have live, which gives them a longer span of playability in the end, but its the same thing over. I still haven't bought this though, only rented. I really should get some money lol

    I was just at the video game store and there is a LOT of used copied of Fable2 on the shelf... I'm not sure what that means, but the game is pretty good in my own personal opinion. Maybe a good rental for others, but unless you're a hardcore fan of being the chicken chaser... I'm not sure how long these DLC's can prolong Fable adventures. At least they are being offered, can't complain about that

    Agree w/ most of you. The DLC "could" last couple hours if you go find all the books and all the chests. Regardless the time I enjoyed Knothole. Hope the next will give some weapons and armor that aren't worthless. Loved the addition of 4 slots and the new gems. Hope it won't take forever like last time. Or at least they just won't announce a date until they're sure everything is tight for a release.

    knothole island was ok.
    dsnt extend the game THAT much though.
    I guess if you found everything on the island it could take several hours but otherwise no lol.
    I hope the next extension is better.

    And if they do make Fable III, i hope to GOD that they get rid of the travelling system they have....where even if you chose to walk from place to place instead of transport, you get that stupid, long, annoying loading screen.
    As an action RPG, it should be a seemless open world.
    I could see why they did load screens for sections in Fable I, maybe b/c of technical limits, but in Fable II it couldve been easily done.
    I love Fable IIs story, fighting, etc, just as much as i did the first fable.
    But man those loading screens are killing me!

    They actually have. RPGs like Last remnant and Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 is better than western RPGs like Fallout 3 and definetly better than Oblivion.

    I do agree with you a little bit. But most of the majority of the fan base have PS3's. And if FFXIII outsells Fable which it might, it will b bcuz of the PS3 fan base.

    But when it comes to those other rpg's how many units have they sold compared to Fable II or anyother action RPG?

    and no i dont play many true RPGs except for the FF in the past, I've been looking for some but non have sparked my interest. But I'm tryin to balance my 360 which the hard drive just fried on me(got the error 74 message and one ring of death) and my pc which i just bought ETW.

    Wow,the sales are better than I thought and several of my friends have this game--but then again,Fallout 3 is GOTY--ARG,just decided I'm buying both if I can get them both for 60 dollars total--I guess ebay or a trade in or sale or something should do the trick.

I guess you don't play many true rpgs apart from FF because if you have than you would know other true RPGs like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean 4, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Encharted arms which ain't bad game, eternal sonata, Tales of vesperia. These some of the true rpgs that i can remember and these games are as good if not better than some of the FF games. Even in the ps1 days Rpgs like xenogears was better than any of the FF games on the ps1.

    i really dont see why anybody even liked fable 2 its just fable 1 with different quests but all the so called next generation rpgs are watered down they should be called lmrpg the lazy man role playing games everything done for you follow the yellow line fable 2 fast travel ,follow the dot on your compass wtf people dont want to go explore and find things they want to know what to do step by step and do it as fast as they can its actually funny thats why rpgs ended when the next generation came all these specs my ps3 is bigger than your 360 and neither one can make a game that makes you do everthing by yourself everythings handed to you

    Never thought of it like that...thank you! And yes, FFVII was awesome, but i'm still replaying FFVIII on the pc NOW! True rpgs...I think they need to move onto the pc for good, its the only we are going to see the length and depth we all want from an rpg. I think FFXIII will outsell Fable 2, but no-where near as quickly.

    Really think that FFXIII will out do it? IDK, i always thought that FF games were more oreintated towards Eastern gamers. Don't get me wrong, I love them especially FFVIII, yes FFVIII, and FFX. But IMO the 360 is more of an action orientated "machine". I mean look at how many true RPG's are out for the 360, not many. And the FF series is about as true RPG that you can get. Plus the reason I think that Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls, and Fable have done so good is the reason being that they're Action RPGs.

    Then again I might be wrong, only time will tell.

    Just thought I'd give my 2 cents, lol

    Ebay is my second home! I never pay any more than £20 for a game, even new releases. I only ever pay full price for either a Final Fantasy game or GTA game, as i'm guaranteed value for money. I have bookmarks to every major online game seller, and check regularly. I never trade in games, its a waste of time! I just got Dead Space for £17.95, Fallout 3 for £20, I got Fable 2 for £17.95 a week after release, and GTA4 for £22 on the day of release. I'm better than women for bargain hunting!

    @Noah-Phoenix: lol alright, no more nasty remarks. Seriously though - you, my friend, need to start checking game prices out online if you're having trouble paying for with new games. I wait a few months after the new games come out before I buy them because if I check either amazon or half.com, the prices have already dropped by $10-$20. I know the trade-ins drop the price of the game you want, but the problem you're running into is why I stopped trading in games a long time ago, especially now with all the DLC that tends to come out a few months after the games are released. Anyways, just thought I'd mention it.

    I agree that the price of DLC is very good, it's just when you add it to the price of the original game, it adds up. If the original was huge, like Fallout 3, then hey-ho, but if it was disappointingly short like Fable 2, then it feels like a rip off, and it should have been included in the first place.
