LucasArts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was regarded as a solid installment in George Lucas' space-opera saga upon its launch in September, recording a decidedly decent critical reception on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP. And with award season in full swing, the action adventure has already picked up at least one noteworthy accolade, taking home the Writers Guild of America's award for game writing earlier this week.

To complement the game's qualitative success, LucasArts can now trumpet The Force Unleashed's quantitative performance as well. This week, the publisher's parent company Lucasfilm announced that the game has attained global sales of 5.7 million units across its myriad platforms, which include the Xbox 360, PS3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, DS, and mobile devices.

Of that tally, 1.5 million units of The Force Unleashed were sold during the game's opening week, after the publisher said that it had shipped out 4.3 million copies to global retailers. Lucasfilm notes that The Force Unleashed's performances have secured it the standing of "fastest-selling Star Wars video game in history."

Set between the ending of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Force Unleashed chronicles the travails of Darth Vader's secret apprentice. As the acolyte, players are tasked with hunting down the Jedi remnant across the galaxy, wreaking as much Force-powered destruction as possible in the process.
