When the Nintendo DS first launched in North America in November 2004, it was most widely recognized in a single color: titanium silver. Nearly four years, 25 million units, a redesign, and a veritable rainbow of hues later, and the DS has come full circle.

Today, Nintendo said the latest shade to grace its primo-popular portable will be metallic silver. Nintendo's third new color option of the year for the DS Lite, the metallic silver portable will be available beginning September 7 for the standard retail price of $129.99.

As with the metallic rose DS Lite unveiled in May, Nintendo has signed on celebrity talent to support the launch of the new tone. Fresh off her role in The Incredible Hulk, Liv Tyler will lend her likeness to a print ad campaign, which Nintendo expects to roll out shortly.

The DS consistently tops the NPD Group's monthly hardware sales charts in the US. For the month of July, the four-year-old system sold nearly 610,000 units in the US alone.

Limited-edition colors aside, the DS Lite is available in a variety of standard hues. These include the portable's 2006 redesign launch color polar white, as well as the systematically rolled out onyx, coral pink, and metallic rose. The portable is also available in two-tone crimson/onyx and cobalt/black hues.
