Mirror's Edge reflected in comic form

DC Comics commits to six-issue adaptation of EA's first-person action-adventure game.

DC Comics has been getting into games in a big way lately. As if making comics based on Prototype and Gears of War wasn't enough, the DC Universe is also going online with its own massively multiplayer online role-playing game and invading the world of Mortal Kombat.

Chalk up another games-and-comics crossover for the publisher, given that Electronic Arts announced today that it has enlisted DC Comics imprint WildStorm to produce a limited series based on the upcoming game Mirror's Edge. Over the course of six issues, the series will flesh out the backstory of EA's first-person action game, delving into the character of Faith and her past as a free-running courier. The first issue is available this week at the Comic-Con International convention in San Diego.

The creative team behind the series is likewise a crossover of the gaming and comic-book worlds. Game writer Rhianna Pratchett (Heavenly Sword, Overlord) will be handling the story of the comic, whereas artist Matthew Dow Smith (Supernatural: Origins and various StormWatch issues) will provide the visuals.

Developed by Stockholm-based EA DICE, Mirror's Edge follows Faith as she attempts to deliver secretive communications under the radar of a heavily monitored society. The game eschews the standard shooter aspects of first-person games in favor of a focus on free-running-inspired acrobatics.

It's good thing to have a comic book for upcoming good looking games like this one,Prototype and my Favorite Gear Of War.

I have the comic...it's ok..... but the game is shaping up to be amazing, I played it at Comic-Con along with Crysis Warhead. The game looks amazing, however, even though it is original, it seems a bit...repetitive. However, it could also turn out like Portal so o.0

As cool as this game looks, it'll only get around 7.5 I think. It looks way too easy and reptitive, but a good effort and sleak visuals should bring it up a bit.

It's from DC comics though...at least they should have looked into some real talent like Topcow Comics, but I guess EA's behind it. Nazi companies think alike.

This game was a sleeper hit at E3 in my opinion. Not a ton of hype leading up but after seeing it in action I'm really looking forward to playing it. As far as the comics go, I'm there dude.

What's bland about this? It's first person parkour, acrobatics and martial arts by the Battlefield folks. I don't think there's many games like this before. The music (in the trailer) is also something I like a whole lot.

I agree with xbox360progamer... unless they do something really cool or innovative in this game, it does look bland. My take on it is mediocre game = mediocre comic.

Do you notice how many different companies are trying to get in on the gaming scene, the music business is dying a slow death and gamers are the new business cash-cow....as He-man said " I Have the power "

Soooo...we go from the complete and utter bullshots trailer for the game, to the really ugly cel-shaded trailer...and now they're trying to push a *comic book*? Gah.

Thought this was a Ubisoft game.... and it looks quite rubbish to be honest, it's like PDZ with low grav and blatantly rips off a few other game concepts. Pass.

Oh now that is awesome! Mirror's Edge is looking fantastic and I love the idea of it branching off like this. A comic seems a perfect match. Can't wait!

Well it's DC's turn to get a chunk out of the gaming industry, move aside Marvel!

  • necronaux

    Posted Jul 24, 2008 11:16 am GMT

Seems to be the way the industry is going... comics, graphic novels, novels, movies. I realize hard-core gamers may not relish the additional media, but I enjoy the plots, backgrounds, and stories... IF they're done right, they can enhance the overall gaming experience. If they're not, they're just cashing in on a games popularity, it can ruin the franchise for everyone.
