According to chairman Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's top management priority is "to restore profitability in our television and game businesses." Speaking at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Tokyo, Stringer said that this was number one on his to-do list, reports Bloomberg. Both the television and game divisions of the company made a loss last year.

In May, Sony released its fiscal year (April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008) results, and overall the company reported solid results, with operating income up 422 percent to $3.3 billion. Though still coming up short of profitability, Sony's games division also made substantial gains, cutting its margin of loss by nearly $1 billion compared to the year prior.

As part of its year-end report, Sony forecast that its games division would be back to making a profit during this financial year, citing hardware cost reductions and an "enhanced lineup of software titles in the PS3 business." The company also predicted that it will sell 10 million PlayStation 3s, 15 million PSPs, and 9 million PlayStation 2s this year.

Sony will announce its midterm business plan on June 26.
