Ubisoft crowns new Prince of Persia

"New chapter" in acrobatic action adventure series headed to 360, PS3, PC this holiday; separate edition also planned for DS.

As one of Ubisoft's best-known, not to mention best-selling, franchises, Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia series was a shoo-in to return despite 2005's billed conclusion to the Sands of Time trilogy, The Two Thrones. In January, Ubisoft gave first wind of a new game in any official capacity, saying as part of its third-quarter financial report that Prince of Persia would bound to new ledges sometime during the publisher's 2008-09 fiscal year.

Today, Ubisoft officially confirmed Prince of Persia for a holiday 2008 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Details on the Ubisoft Montreal-developed game are light, but Ubisoft has said the game will be "a new chapter" in the franchise that tinkers with traditional action adventure gameplay. The publisher also said the game will introduce a new illustrative art style to the series. A separate version featuring "an entirely new storyline and new characters" is also in the works for the Nintendo DS.

Noticeably absent from today's announcement was a subtitle for the new Prince of Persia game. When rumors first surfaced of a new game in the franchise in October, the mysterious gaming industry blogger Surfer Girl pegged the game's surname as Ghosts of the Past. However, Surfer Girl was under the impression that the game, which she said would forgo "the dark edginess of the last two titles in favor a fantastical cross between The Sands of Time, Ico, and Zelda," would also appear on the Wii.

A second subtitle for the game surfaced last week. First spotted by Trademork, Prince of Persia Prodigy turned up in the United States Patent and Trademark Office's online database. However, the application did not reveal which platforms the game would appear on.

Like Hotboy said, THIS IS NOT A SEQUEL TO THE TWO THRONES!!! This is NOT a Prince of Persia 4! It is a Prince of Persia 1 again.

Yeah, and Warrior Within was my favorite out of the whole Sands of Time Trilogy. I loved how the Dahaka twisted him into a figure of depression. Do you guys really think after SEVEN YEARS of being chased by fate itself you would make lots of jokes to your companion?

Yeah, can't wait until this. (Is AC2 really being released back to back with this? I haven't heard any rumors of its development.)

i agree with hotbodyboy........warrior within was awesome........it had so much more combos and attacks than sands of time....whereas two thrones had only one new attack(speed kill)....nyways...everybody can have their own viewpoints...and we are no one to judge...that they are rite or wrong........hope this pop meets all our demands....

First off let me clear some doubts!! This game is NOT A SEQUEL to Two Thrones. Its Going to be a separate series. And it will also be a TRILOGY like SOT and AC.

Both AC 2 and POP 2 will release back to back and the same for AC 3 and POP 3.

Now for all you guys out there who hate Warrior Within can suck my BALLS. Check out gamespot comments properly. Many have even rated it as the BEST GAME EVER.

I am not saying Two Thrones was **** But comparing to Two Thrones it is. TWO THRONES survived because of the environment of Sands Of Time and the COMBAT was STRAIGHT LIFT from WARRIOR WITHIN with not a single CHANGE [Pathetic].

Understandable that the prince goes DARK. He is continuously chased by the Dahaka and the prince looses his peace of mind and goes into depression. PLEASE PLEASE see the MAKING OF WARRIOR WITHIN to understand the game properly, get your FACTS RIGHT and then speak blah....

So I've heard that the PS3 version is gonna have something extra then the 360's version but I have not heard anything about it are the PS3 users just rubbing it in our faces that they have a economiclly bigger system? Or is there really something different about the two games? I wonder if its to early to even tell but I want to get to the bottom of it.

Hmmm im really not sure i like the look of this. I love cell shading but i think the prince looks really bad. Saying that each time they brought out a game i thought the prince looked worse but it still played well so i will wait for the reviews.

I really dont know why they had to take 2 steps backwards with it either. Take away the sands and take away multiple enemies? These were the 2 most fun elements, and they have replaced them with... a spinning girl?

They are doing a "james bond" taking it back to basics so they can add stuff back on in the next game with most people going "oh wow, it has sands in now!" even though it wouldnt be new...

Well fingers crossed ubi dont poo it up, because they are good at that. Up there with EA lol.

Hopefully this can make up for the Two Thrones. I mean, Warrior Within was nowhere near as good as The Sands of Time, but at least it had far better gameplay (and a better storyline) than the craptacular final game.

Am I alone in actually enjoying Two Thrones' atmosphere? I absolutely loved it. Warrior Within...was horrible. A complete and utter departure from the first game. People say the prince is emo, but I don't see that. Bear in mind he's been tormented for 7+ years. Chased by the Dahaka for most of them. He was desperate, tormented, and harried. He finally egst what he perceives as the end to his journey and watches his new love die right in front of him, with him helpless. And you want a stoic "Meh" kind of guy like in Warrior Within? Get rid of the rock music, and throw in orchestral stuff, with heavy bass / tempo for battle sequences.

I think the third one more than made up for 2. They have the prefict blend of the prince and I just know this is going to rock!!!!!!!!

New GI has an article about this. Interesting that there's no Wii version planned. I figured the cel-shaded graphics would lend itself well on Wii. That kinda bites. Looks like i'll be picking it up for 360. Looks to be an awesome game either way.

WOOOOT can't wait for it.... THIS YEAR WOW so cool!!!! I thought that t2t would be the last of pop but it seems I was wrong, maybe they'll make something like the son of the prince and farrah that would be cool. The name would be still Prince of persia, cause the old prince is now the king of persia so his son is the prince. I was thinking once on how a new prince of persia game would be, it seems my wish came through!!! YAY!!!
