Silent Hill comes home in September

Europe to get Homecoming, the latest in the survival horror franchise, in autumn; US release date not yet known.

When the original Silent Hill game crept up on gamers in 1999, few could have guessed it would spawn a series still serving up shocks almost 10 years later. Konami's amazingly brief E3 '07 press conference confirmed that it would bedo just that, when the company announced Silent Hill 5 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Konami has now confirmed that the game will be called Silent Hill: Homecoming, and will hit European shores at the end of September this year. News about other territories was not released.

The game introduces a new protagonist, Alex Shepherd, and follows him as he moves from his hometown back to the titular town to face the "darkest horrors" and find his brother. Konami has promised a new combat system to go with the change of platform, but the only details currently available are that it will feature "a wide array of attacks and counters" and "a variety of weapons."

Homecoming will be the venerable survival horror franchise's first outing on next-gen platforms. It will also be the first entry in the series to extend the story since 2004's Silent Hill 4: The Room. Last year's PlayStation Portable title Silent Hill: Origins, which arrived on the PlayStation 2 earlier this year, was a prequel.

To be totally honest, as an avid fan of the Silent Hill series, this looks like it could potentially be a major letdown. The two most discouraging things about the screenshots and movies are that it is way too much like the movie (which I liked, but I'm expecting originality) and there is too much visibility. One of the most frightening aspects of the games is that your sight is limited to the point where you're confused about what you're NOT seeing just as much as what you are. I'm afraid that unless the American team is disturbed enough to fully appreciate the atmosphere of the previous games, it will flop and have to be viewed as a lesson by everyone involved.

But I guess that would be fine, because they'd probably get it right the next time.

That's just how I see it at this point.

To be honest i think they'll need slightly more than a new combat system to stop this title feeling stale. The story line doesn't sound very original either. I've only played Silent Hill 2 but loved it.

I also agree with "pain4ever" that this game will probably be delayed until next year.

Silent Hill has come a long way and I still remember playing the original Silent Hill for the first time... I was one of the first of my friends to buy it... back then no one not even me knew what Silent Hill was about and I actually thought at the time that it might be a decent game to pass the time till I find something better to play...

But I guess (as everyone else that played Silent Hill 1) you realized within the first 10 minutes that Silent hill was A LOT more than what you bargained for! I still freak out when I hear that G****** siren! Till this day that game left my mind all warped... Got me hooked on proper survival horror games... Okay well in my book there is only Silent Hill and Resident Evil... But the new Alone In The Dark seems good too...

I just hope they can bring back that "feeling" of the original Silent Hill in this one. Don't get me wrong they were all good, except maybe "The Room" didn't enjoy that one all that much.... But I'd like to feel the same "fear" as I did in the first one..... And I hope they have a Kitana in this one as well...

Not so sure about this one. Its being made by americans. Somehow it didnt surprise me that an american silent hill will have "a wide array of attacks and counters" and "a variety of weapons." . Man, the whole thing behind silent hill is that your dude isnt good at fighting. It makes the game more realistic. Now its gonna be all american with sic combos and kill shots, who wants to bet.

I have a question, in the X360 version it says that the release date will be at Sept of 2008 and in the PS3 wsays it will be in Sept of 2009, it will have separated release dates or it was a typo?

Sweet, my favorite Survival Horror franchise!! But it will have some big shoes to fill now that Resident Evil 4 has raised the bar for the genre. One things for sure, it'll definitely have more fog than any other game!

GOOD LORD! Finally, I'm so excited about this!

Now the only thing we need is retconning all those UFO/dog endings and connect them to the real story. Goofy ending? That's because it's true.

    Ok, please don't kill me.

Homecoming? that subtitle sux even though it means the main character coming back to his hometown or something to do with the game plot .I think the brief trailer that has "Silent Hill V" with the Silent Hill:Origins insignia at the end sounds alot cooler, I hope that's only a region's sub title cause some games have differnt names/subtitle overseas they better call it Silent Hill V in North America ! I love the Silent Hill & Resident Evil franchise ,other survival horror franchises come close but they can't compare with those 2 series maybe the classic alone in the dark series especially with its next -gen installment

The challenge the developers face is to create a dynamic combat system without changing Silent Hill from a survival horror game to an action game.

I love the silent hill games, and to be fair I think the only thing I could criticise about the previous sequels is the combat system. But hearing about it all getting a change with a more diverse selection of weapons... its just got me even more excited
