Last year, Mario and Sonic went head-to-head for the first time at the Olympics, but the dueling mascots weren't content to settle for gold and instead went quintuple platinum.

Sega today confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii and DS have collectively sold 5 million copies worldwide. Sega published the game in Europe and North America, while Nintendo handled publishing duties in Japan.

Some Sega executives might have breathed a sigh of relief as the sales figures came in, as they backed up the publisher's publicly pronounced prerelease sales expectations of 4 million. The Wii version was released last November, with the DS edition following in January.

Sega gets another crack at the Olympic Games later this year when it releases Beijing 2008. The opening ceremonies for the actual Beijing 2008 Olympics are set for August 8, 2008.
