New PS3 bundles revealed for Europe

[UPDATE] Two new PlayStation 3 packs to be released in Europe, both featuring the 40GB console, one headed to the UK.

Buying a next-generation console has never been more complicated. Alongside the Arcade, Pro, and Elite versions of the Xbox 360 (which feature no hard drive, 20GB, and 120GB respectively), there are also multiple SKUs of the PlayStation 3, which have varied between 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB depending on geographical region. Even the handhelds aren't safe: The Nintendo DS became the DS Lite, and the PlayStation Portable is now the PSP Slim & Lite (or PSP-2000). Only the Wii has so far seemed to remain immune to the multiple-SKU trend.

Bundling consoles with various controllers, games, and movies has also been a growing trend--and European consumers are about to get another set of choices. GameSpot's sister site, French language GameKult.com, is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is set to release two new PlayStation 3 bundles in Europe. Sony also recently announced a Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle in the US.

The first new European PS3 bundle, due to arrive on March 19, is movie-focused--it will include a 40GB PS3 and the films 300, Casino Royale, and Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray as well as a Sixaxis controller. GameKult reports that this bundle will retail for €399 (approximately £300, or $600). At the same price but arriving on March 28, the second bundle will include a 40GB PS3, a Sixaxis controller, and a copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

[UPDATE]A Sony UK representative confirmed that the Gran Turismo 5 bundle will be heading to the UK as well, with a target date set for the end of March, although it currently has no plans to release the movie bundle in the UK.

Anyone know if they're reintroducing PSX/2 compatibility with these models to the UK or are they still clinging onto their pathetic emulator license excuse?

Agermemnon. Computer - A device that computes. Huh. Look at that. The PS3 fits that. Hey. I can install Linux on the PS3, that's very computer like. Again, you simply catagorizing it as a "games console" doesn't make it so. But really, what does it matter? If it's a game's console that plays blu-ray or a blu-ray console that plays games, what difference does this make to you? You clearly have some sort of anti-Sony sentiment going on, how does this affect you if Sony's making money off games, blu-ray's or both?

Agermemnon. The features of the PS3 would indicate that it is, indeed, more than just a games console. Sony isn't marketing it solely as a games machine, it's clearly meant as a Blu-Ray player/Dvd player/Games hybrid. What on earth do you use to justify your classification of the PS3 as simply a "games" console? If you were to compare features to, for example a Wii, the Wii is clearly a "games" console. Do you understand the difference? It's like saying your PC is simply a games machine because you use it primarily for games and don't use it for anything else. My PS3 is my main media player at home, with blu-ray's, divx and dvd's taking up at least half of my PS3 play time and games taking the other half. I wouldn't classify my PS3 as a games player anymore than I would classify it as a DVD player. It's clearly both.

@Travis281 & darkride yeah all well and good but it is a GAMES CONSOLE Sony only say it's a PC or COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM too get it in a lower vat or tax bracket , they tried it with the ps2 but it got laughed out the room if i remember right .

I agree with Travis281. The PS3 has always been marketed as a Computer Entertainment System. I love the games, free online play, etc, etc, but my PS3 has taken the place of my old DVD player. It upscales, it plays Blu-Ray, and plays kick ass games. What more would you want? Besides, didn't they just announce more bundles in the UK with Uncharted and RFOM or something? How is consumer choice a bad thing?

"Wow lame bundles Sony if you want to push sales why are releasing a bundle with movies for lets not forget a gamin console"

They market the PS3 as an all-in-one media device and believe it or not, people do buy it as a blu-ray player. I watch more movies on mine than I play games and without blu I would not have even bought one.

TTDog mentioned "And with the DualShock 3 coming soon the controller will be out of date within 3 months. Its just Sony milking the fanbase again." Need I remind you of the charge and play kit's MS sells, $120 wifi, HD-DVD addon (now on sale!) and the $50 a month for the "privilege" of playing your games online? Thought not.

blackace. Hmm. Where to start? Ok, vgchartz.com is my source for sales numbers. Take the "other" territories, add Japan and you've got the world minus America. PS3 has pulled ahead everywhere but America, and in only one year. You mentioned " The reason the U.S. favors the XBox 360 is 1) It's a American." That didn't really help the old Xbox overall in the end. PS2 creamed it, and it was far less of a system than the Xbox.
"2) It has more quality games" Simply due to the fact it's been out longer. Have a look at metacritic and check out the percentage of games rated 70% and up compared to the total. PS3 has the lead in quality of total games released thus far. "That's why people buy game consoles." Whoever said the PS3 was a games console? Sony markets it as a "Computer Entertainment System" and that's what I bought. You want a games console, buy a Wii. Plenty of people are.
At this point, the 360's sales growth is slowing, hardware is still a problem and there's no light at the end of the tunnel. It's nearing the end of it's run with only a couple of years left till MS plans to pull the plug. Sure those two years will probably be solid, but if you can only have one console, why not the one with a future, blu-ray player, free online, social networking, quality titles, dvd upscaler, media center, divx player, etc etc as opposed to a console with sketchy hardware and only two years left. I love my 360 and we've had a blast, but I wouldn't buy one at this point in the game if I could only choose one or the other. The rest of the world certainly seems to agree with me.

wikipedia, under their video games section has a list of the 20 best console sellers of all time. All 4 GT's are on there. Also, I resent your first statement. Just because little things like statistics, sales figures, developer comments usually don't back you up doesn't mean I'm misusing them. Stats are just numbers. They aren't biased. 62% of people know that.

darkride66 zeak123 mentioned "The other thing is that 360's arent as popular in Europe as they are in the US."
That's a bit of an understatement, and leads me to my next thought. Congrats to the PS3 for pulling ahead of the 360 worldwide (except NA).
I noticed today that the PS3 has erased the 360's lead in the PAL territories and Japan. It stands at 6.27 million sold vs the 360's 6.21 million. Even though the PS3 is gaining steam in North America as well, it continues to baffle me why Americans insist on spending money on the hardware plagued 360 when there's a similarly priced fully featured alternative. The rest of the world has caught on, why so slow, US?
    *********************************************
No exactly sure where you're getting your information from. The PS3 is not ahead of the XBox 360 in Europe. It's like 5.5 million for the 360 and 4.3 million for Europe. The PS3 is ahead of the 360 in Japan, but that's a given since American consoles never sell well in Japan anyways. The PS3 is miles behind in America 11 million to 4 million. The reason the U.S. favors the XBox 360 is 1) It's a American made system (probably the reason Japan and Europe don't like it as much). 2) It has more quality games on it then the other 2 systems currently. That's why people buy game consoles. It's for the GAMES. Not Blu-Ray movies, which is why the PS3 has been selling so well. People are buying it to watch Blu-Ray movies more so then games. At least in America they seem to be. That's why software sales aren't as high as in Europe for some of the games. I own all 3 systems, so it doesn't really matter to me what these systems do in Europe or Japan, as long as quality games get released in America, I'm happy.

LOL at those who think that Prologue is a full game, sure its listed as a title in its own right, but that's purely because they're charging for it.

And with the DualShock 3 coming soon the controller will be out of date within 3 months.

Its just Sony milking the fanbase again.

    ---
I think the pressure is coming more from Sony the Polyphony. Polyphony are pretty die hard and they want to make it the best possible (without damage, which is an overly vital part of racing). But things get rushed and blah blah blah. Plus GT5 with no damage (Which i will not have), is oging to suck online. Immature people will get in there and just ram into people to screw up their game. It happends on forza 2 (with damage) all the time and they usually drop connection after they run into someone, so I would expect them to stay longer in GT5 online. Thats only my theory though.

You claim that online play was what everyone was waiting for, yet the lack of it didn't hurt sales at all. It's still in the top 20 best selling console games of all time, along with the other three. And I really don't see how the developers taking their time make them "arrogant". I think developers should take all the time they need. There's more than enough quality titles to keep PS3 fans busy for the next year while we wait, if it even takes that long.

Darkride, you are fantastic and misusing "facts" or "statistics". The GT series is top 20. GT4 erked MANY loyal GT fans, including myself. You tried ti pick him apart of the GT4 quote, but GT4 is pretty low on the totem pole for individual games. teh GT5 prologue bundle can really help put Sony back on the map. the thing is, people that dont race cars, think that the GT series is realistic, and they wont stop believing that, which is why it sells. Unfortunately I dont think the GT fad is nearly as large as it was back in the day and the fact that they are doing this means they know they are slipping behind the other two (wii, 360). Either way, I certainly think it will help and the movie bundle, pisses me off as a gamer.

In GT4, yeah you got a lot more cars, (but lots were really the same) and a few more tracks. You left out online play which is what everyone was waiting for. They seriously cannot make people wait so long because it will just hurt the image of the series, they better get it right this time.

I understood what TTDog was getting at perfectly. I dont like how Polyphony Digital has been [doing/ trying to do] this "partial" crap since Gran Tourismo 3. We will know for sure if GT 5ROLOGUE was a full game if they go to 6 after this game. If I see another disc or they start offering DLC that you have to pay for, then this game aint complete. I like Gran tourismo (I have 1,2,3,&4. Heck I even got Turist trophy and Omega boost) but I don't like console games that come in pieces for one part(this isnt a mmorpg or are they trying to make it that way with cars? If so I stand corrected.). I will most definitly make an exception if they allow me to get the driver out the car and kick the tires. Its the little things. About the controller thing: why didn't Sony just pack in a Dual shock 3? tsk tsk.

I would get a ps3 when i'm ready for blu-ray. For games , it just doesnt appeal to me yet. I'm more then happy with my 360 line up, I have 2 games i own i haven't finished and i want to go back and get some i hadn't already. On top of that all the new games this year that look amazing. I'm just not compelled to spend any gaming dollars on a ps3 right now when i can buy 6 games for a platform i already invested in. I DO want a Ps3 don't confuse me for a fanboy, if someone gave me one id happily play little big planet GT5 and use the HD movies. Where i stand the next console i buy is a Wii (Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Zelda) The real problem is i'm poor haha and can't afford all 3 right now. Maybe next generation......

The only reason why Gran Turismo doesn't have damage modeling because they want to do it right or not do it at all. With the cars Gran Turismo 5 will have cars that aren't even out yet and you'll get to see them for the first time in the game. Forza to me feels like an arcade game rather than a simulator like it's supose to be.

Take away that vibrating object and you'll definitely notice it Panman_Dan.

Personally, after Forza 2 I can't go back to GT. It's not that GT doesn't look beautiful but I feel like I've moved beyond that into true simulation. I'm looking forward to seeing everything it offers as an entire package to see if I would still like it as much as 3. Forza just upped racing simulation so much. GT is still just now getting licensed cars that Forza had years ago. Damage, physics, collisions, customization, Forza is a tough package to beat. Hate to go on about racing games in a bundle news story but I still think it's relevant.

    GT still looks great though!
