Wireless Guitar Hero III controller going solo in '08

Activision to offer Gibson Les Paul and Kramer for their respective Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2 versions as stand-alone purchases early next year.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Nov 26, 2007 6:13 pm PT

When Activision and RedOctane released Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 in April, the copublishers let virtual rockers pick up the newly released Gibson X-Plorer controller as a stand-alone purchase day and date to accommodate for the new multiplayer duets. However, the publishers did not extend that same courtesy with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock; the plastic counterparts of Gibson's Les Paul and Kramer guitars were available in bundle form only when they arrived for their respective versions on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii in October. (PC and Mac versions featuring the X-Plorer controller were released in November.)

Today, Activision announced that the toy guitars previously available only packed in with a copy of the game will be offered stand-alone as well in early 2008. The stand-alone guitars will be no different than the currently available Gibson Les Paul for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, or the Gibson Kramer for the PS2.

The Guitar Hero franchise has proven to be a boon for Activision. Although the game hasn't been reviewed as positively as archrival Rock Band, audiences have been lined up in droves to experience the rock-focused rhythm game. Guitar Hero III took four of the top 10 best-seller slots for the month of October, moving an estimated 1.4 million units in its first six days on the market and tallying more than $115 million in first-week sales.

@ Thejugglingbum
"This is cool. I can't wait for Guitar Hero to come out with their own Rock Band like set up. It's going to be way better than Rock Band. I heard it's going to have keyboards and the songs will be better because Guitar Hero has the name and gets more real songs."

If I'm not mistaken, Rock Band has MTV behind it. Rock Band also has more frequent downloadable content, and the majority of the tracks are mater recordings, just like Guitar Hero.

So, y'know. Use your frickin' head.

The controller issue. I think one of the reasons they're holding the controllers back is to iron out some of the kinks. Many of the guitars shipped aren't exactly perfect, with many people experiencing problems with the fret buttons. It's a shame for Wii and PS3 owners, as they wn't be able to rock out with a friend (unless said friend has GH3).

The GH3 guitar can be frustrating at first but after it is calibrated it works great. If your game didn't need to be calibrated on GH2 then just play with the sync button on the dongle that is what I did and it works perfectly now. My only complaint is that the Fret buttons are spaced to far apart.

Heh, I was actually just wondering about this the other day because I only have one guitar for Guitar Hero now (Rock Band guitar doesn't work with it, apparently...) so I was needing another one, and I was wanting to get another wireless Les Paul. Pretty sweet news, just anxious to see how much they go for. Probably $50ish?

just buy GH3 w/guitar at gamestop again and trade the game back in toward itself. then you will have an extra guitar.

I know that the Gibson Les Paul is the standard as far as rock goes.. but I wanna play a Fender Strat. (We have this 'friendly discussion' in our band all the time, I play a strat and the other guitarist plays a Les Paul... almost as bad as Ford v Holden, PC v MAC or even PS3 v XBox360 v Wii)

I played GH3 at a friends house on a PS3 it was laggy as hell, you had to play all the notes before the actual note? is this a common thing if so I wont be getting one for the 360.

I still think it was dumb to wait until 08 to release stand-alone guitars. Just as dumb as having songs unlockable only through co-op career, which needs another guitar "GASP!"

Good one Neverworks...err...neversoft

I'm actually find that purchasing a wired second guitar would be better since there would be no worry on battery life. That's the only complaint I have with the wireless guitar. The charger should work with the Gibson like the other controllers.

Isn't Rock band made by the same people who made Guitar Hero 1 and 2? I swear to God that's the case... Anyway...more peripherals, more spending. *shrugs on this really.

to coolman437, its the same as why 360 games don't work on Xbox 1, but Xbxo 1 games work on 360. But i agree with you, 2 next-gen guitars should both work the same

dj_b02us Dj I'm left handed and I play the guitar right handed Its actually easier for me cause I better hitting the notes with my dominant hand And strumming takes a little time to Get the hang off but its easier after awhile

why does the guitar on guitar hero work for rockband but the rock band guitar doesn't work for guitar thats extremely stupid, if one product works for another it should be vis versa, also rock band is way too easy for me i can get like on avg 95-98% on hard on every song and expert i get 94-6% the guitar and bass parts are way too easy compared to guitar hero , feels like rock band was dumbed down, plus the buttons on the guitar sux you can't really tell where your fingers are when you moving up and down the fret when it only has those 3 little upraised dots which you can never feel on the yellow button, overall i think guitar hero is a better game for the people who been playing the franchise games and are good , also that rock band is for beginners. Also was annoys me is why do they both have same songs on each game, why not have all different songs so then the consumer isn't repeatedly replaying the same song on different games ex) Retilia- strokes , When your young - killers. so annoying

im so sick of this crap. when the F*** are they going to make a left handed guitar?? and dont give me that "oh u can flip it"crap. a REAL one for left handers that when you play it the whammy bar is in the same place as if you were a right hander. how many stupid overly priced GH guitars do they have to make before they make ONE for left handed people? and YES there is a market for it. More ppl would buy it then people who would buy one of those new 300 dollar special edition bulls*** KISS ones. GAH! so frustrating! >_

This is good news, but I actually prefer the wired one. The wireless controller randomly craps out on the green button, and the star power randomly goes off in sections of no notes, I guess it's way too sensitive.

On my Rock Band, I use my x-plorer as a base. The guitar it came with is OK, it just takes some getting used to. Try this on for size: Open up your old (360) wired X-plorer Guitars and make the buttons a bit sturdier with some rubber in there. You can also modify the donlge of the X-plorer to make is sturdier. If you add the right amount of rubber to modify it correctly, it adds a nice amount of weight to the whole thing and makes the experience all that better.

rock band guitar sucks way too hard, the dongle, horrible strummer, buttons are awkward. rock band does not even work with guitar hero 3 guitar (PS3) and there not going to do a patch cause they would have by now. expensive equipment not compatible with other expensive equipment. rock band was NOT my moneys worth then. love the game.

...WTH?^^^^^^^^

The Rock Band Guitar is awesome, only thing that would have made it better if the 360 version was wireless.

Sweet, I might pick one up if the price is right. I wanted to get it bundled with GH3, but I've already got two X-plorers, so I bought the game separately since it was cheaper.

:
mhrnw The reason they waited is so they would sell some of their wired xplorer guitars that they had just sitting on the shelves. It makes alot of sense from a business point of view.

- you got a point, but it doesn't makes sense to put out better a product and not make it avail. until MONTHS after the game is already on the market...it could bite 'em in the butt waiting until '08?

who's gonna buy an explorer anyways (they'll get stuck with 'em regardless)...they would $ell more of the les paul's for the holidays
but then again it is compatible with rock band?

I got the Xplorer from GH2 and the Les Paul from GH3 and I can't stand the LP, it is inaccurate and is not as responsive as the wired Xplorer.

Anyone else have that issue?

Sweet... Would be cool if at some stage they give you a customizing kit to sort of "Build" your own... Depending on the model you want...

You know build like a standard case with all the elements inside then a kit you can actually build around that....

Hey just in case I put patent right on that Idea...!!!

They need to fix it so the star power doesn't trigger so easily... but I've been playing the far superior Rock Band with it, so if they updated the software I probably would never know.

well rock band costs more has more faulty hardware, and you need like 4 people to get the full experience, probably a better game, but I like the track lists better in GH3 anyways

That depends on whether the Wii A/V port can output digital. Which is required for optical, or HDMI.
