PS3 beats Wii sales in Japan

Latest hardware sales figures show that the new 40GB SKU and ceramic white model have proven popular in Sony's homeland while 360 sales plummet.

The new model PlayStation 3 landed in Japan on November 11, coming with fewer USB ports, a 40GB hard drive, no backward compatibility, a cheaper price tag of 39,980 yen (approx $341), and a new colour--ceramic white.

The move seems to have paid off for Sony as hardware sales figures from Media Create for the week of November 5-11 show the PS3 outselling the Wii for the first time, with sales of Sony's console having tripled week on week.

The PS3 sold 55,924 units last week, compared to the Wii's 34,546. The handhelds remained on top of the charts, with the DS Lite selling 78,854 and the PlayStation Portable 58,964 respectively. Bringing up the rear were the PlayStation 2, with 9,043 units, and the Xbox 360 with 5,817 units.

Last week's figures showed the Xbox 360 experiencing a surge in sales due to the release of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which helped move 17,673 systems. The DS Lite reigned with 78,552, followed by the PSP with 59,714, and the Wii with 37,617. The PS3 sold 17,434, and the PS2 10,209.

When I said that Nintendo wanted to Old folk to play the Wii, I didnt mean YOU. It wasn't a literal statement. Nintendo went MAINSTREAM and wants everyone to play a WII, and that's why we get so much crap on the system. Did you watch this years' E3? 85% of the damn conference was them boasting about the Wii's MAINSTREAM success. Hmm? Wonder what that means? All I am saying is that the choice of software is not as good as the other systems, in terms of exclusives from third parties. I never once mentioned graphics because if that was the case, I would not have even BOTHERED to buy a Wii, which I still did, and that was for it's GAMES, which have dissappointed me, "Idiot." This is why I hate the ignorance of people on these boards. You express your thoughts on something, and people burn you.

I'm definitely a true gamer hardcore technophile then. I have a PC, Sony Laptop, Dell Laptop (work), Apple Laptop, Ps3, 360, Wii, PS2, XBox, Gamecube(x2), Dreamcast, N64, PS1, Neogeo, Neogeo CD, Megadrive, Mega CD, Snes, PC Engine, Atari Jaguar, Master system, Nes, Amiga, Amstrad 464, Acorn Electron, Sinclair Spectrum, ZX 80, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Loads of Gameboys, DS and DS lite, black PSP, White PSP, Virtual Gameboy and over 4000 games.

I collect game systems/games and have done for over 20 years. I even have 2 sets of Samba De Amigo Maracas for the Dreamcast (official ones).

I could collect stamps, but that would be boring.

You should see my electricity bill.

actually, hardcore only refers to gaming hours, it has nothing to do with how many systems you own or play games on. the guy you are talking to would be considered a "true gamer", the guys who grew up with the game industry from pong and asteroids through atari's reign, to the birth of the NES and onward. the ategory you talk about , of owning many systems, is what we call a technophile...the guys with HDTV, HD Radio, Most if not all next gen systems, the $1,000 Bose surround sound system, etc. Just thought Id clear that up for ya.

PS3 is for people who want to take risk, xbox is for people who want games now and just stay comfortable at where they are, kind of like putting money in the bank to have it locked at 3% yield. You have give up something in return. Wii is for people that care about fun.

lol, I'm more a hardcore gamer than most people on here, for 1 I can afford any game I want.

People my age have more money to burn than youngsters (lol), I'm only 38 not 75, idiot. My daughter has a Wii of her own, her boyfriend has a Wii, most of his friends have a Wii, my nephew is 150% hardcore gamer, (ie has no job, plays games in his bedroom for 100+ hours a week) has a Wii.(and a 360)

Just because some of the snobs on here turn their nose up on a console does not change the fact that the wii is still a console for hardcore gamers. You don't need a quad cored process with 25 trillion gigaflops of graphical power to make a fun game.

Puppiemaster Those friends of yours that still want a Wii or play it are exactly the people that I mentioned. Nintendo wants Families to buy the wii. They want old folks who were alive during WWII to play the Wii. They want everyone to play the Wii. That sure isn't a problem... unless you leave the hardcore gamers out of the equation. There's too much mainstream, casual crap on the Wii to even be considered a next gen videogame console, and that is the japanese's fault. They love any type of life-sim, that's why we have Cooking mama, or some other crap that simulates real life. I love my Wii, but I'm just dissapointed with the choices that Nintendo made in regards to the Software, and I'm sure that others agree. That's why I think that even though Ps3 might not beat the Wii in sales, it will definitely beat it in Exclusives and just utterly amazing games. In the long run, of course.

You bunch of brainwashed Microsoft fanboys, why wont you admit that this is the point where the PS3 will trash the 360, instead of trying to talk about money profits and losses? What do you know about buisness? The 360 was only ahead because it came out a year before, thus it had more games. AND it was cheaper, but keep in mind that it is not meant to last long. How can you make a 3rd gen console that is supposed to last long with no hard drive and with just a dvd rom? Please make sense for once.

i just wish they'd all get desperate and lower all their prices. and for people who can't afford all three consoles exclusivity is the key to which console is bought. and rite now that console is the 360 with GOW, and Halo 3 and even that classic Dead Rising. pretty soon ps3 will have exclusives but it'll probably be when they've lowered prices again. so there's no point in buying one yet.

    Posted Nov 19, 2007 12:42 pm PT

Good for Sony...of course the more PS3's they sell, the more money they lose. Also the Wii can only sell as many units as they can manufacture. They're probably topped out at about 34,000 units/week until Nintendo can start manufacturing more Wiis.
Also, have you noticed more TV ads for PS2 games? It seems like Sony has decided to continue to push the PS2. I mean, since the PS3 hasn't taken off, it makes sense for Sony to try to sell new software on a system with such a HUGE installed base.

Ok, PS3 finally sold more than Wii, but how much money is sony losing per system now? The cell processor and the blu-ray drive still cost a ton, and are Nintendo's lower numbers a result of still low production? Make's your wonder how desperate Sony is to sell systems at such a loss. Go Nintendo, get production ramped up and bury the competition!

PS3 sales will be up in the US this week due to the Kmart 20% off coupon. I bought an 80GB model on Friday because of it. $100 off was too much to pass up. And yes, I was already going to buy one in mid-December, luckily, Christmas came early.

In theory Sony should see nothing than good news - Over in Japan I would'nt be suprised if every other household has a Wii by now so of course the numbers are gonna lessen as time goes on - and now the PS3 price is lower and as Xbox had its frenzy last Christmas we can assume that this year the PS3 should get back on track.

Really this whole allied to your chosen system thing is stupid and even here I can see alot of moans about how they love or hate the PS3 - Im probably gonna get a PS3 next year mainly for GOW3 and Rockstar titles but thats just me - really all systems are brilliant in their own right and you should'nt knock any of them.
