Ghostlight aims To End All Wars

Forthcoming FPS takes a shot at a World War I setting; publisher hopes it becomes a new franchise.

Kuju's Sheffield studio, recently renamed Chemistry, is working on a first-person shooter that it told GameSpot is "unlike the mass of me-too shooters out there." Called To End All Wars, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game will be set in the European trenches of World War I, and published by Ghostlight.

The companies believe that the title will stand out, even though competition in the FPS market is fierce, particularly in the "war games" genre. A spokesperson for Ghostlight said, "Kuju have gone full-out, conducting in-depth research into 'The Great War,' and are recreating every component of the war, from accurate battlefield recreations to the clothes and weapons that were used."

In a statement, the company added, "Crucially, the experience of the gritty combat in the trenches, the fear of charging across No Man's Land, deadly secret excursions to enemy outposts in the dead of night, and the heart-stopping terror of pounding artillery guns will be central to the gaming experience."

Ghostlight also told GameSpot how the AI will play a big role in the game, reacting to every decision the player makes, meaning that strategy and tactical warfare elements will be crucial to winning the game.

Ghostlight is hoping that To End All Wars will be the start of a successful new franchise for the company. To End All Wars will use Epic's Unreal Engine 3, and is expected to release in summer 2008.

OMFG they need to release and make this game noowww! I'm dieing for a dramatic WW1 or 2 game that's better then cod world at war! COD WAW didn't have much upgrades on weapons and a in depth look on the war. I think game makers could be more dramatic then that. They need to make a WW1 game that ties in bettween the ,"DRAMATICS," of the "head chopping on a stick" of the xbox game: Shellshock Nam but in a first person WW1 shooter.

i REALLY want this to be fun. this will be one of the few non-ww2/modern shooter. @jack1717 all wars are gritty so that cant be a problem
@sgt blizzard they couldnt possibly make a civil war or revolutionairywar game. all the guns are muzzle loaded or bolt action that woul be boring

I can't see how they could make trench warfare entertaining. You leave the trench, you die. The End.

    Posted Jul 10, 2009 2:41 am PT

to Jackc8- no one would make a game were you just sit in a trench all day, only to be killed the second you get out. they would only make a original game if they had original ideas. just like battlefield 1943, a download only game has the potential to be an awful game. esspecially at only 530 mb. but it is a fantastic game!

this game sounds very interesting. it definitly has the potential to be a great game. the only reason why someone would make such a bold game is if they had some pretty good tricks up their sleeves. i think it is innovative. i would like something different then ww2 and modern warfare for a change.

I agree with bob_the_biro, WWI was all about sitting in muddy trenches, getting trench foot, then getting an artillery shell dropped on your head. Who knows though, it might be a good game, I suppose it's possible. We're so terribly short of first-person shooters these days [/sarcasm]

WW1? Goodluck! I really hope this is good. I hope it includes deadly charges into no mans land, mustard gas, shellshock, artillery fire, bi planes, bully beef and much more. after all, this is the xbox 360! The graphics i am sure will be good! I hpe it is fighting for the brits though as they had the best guns(Lee enfield)not the springfield!!! I also hope that it includes bayoneting the huns!! Although i hope that the big berthas are limited against the brits!!! One more thing! I hope it is Xbox live!! Can't wait!!

With the Unreal Engine 3 the graphics should be great. Like Battlestations Midway this game branches out into uncharted waters. It is a bold attempt to caught our imagination and Ghostlight has done that. Will be looking for more.

The Americans won the war:- They were a threat, not a war winning army, at-least not by November 1918, although they would have undoubtedly have become a major player a la WW2 had the Germans not caved in before hand. The fact remains and historians globally agree that by November 1918 the British and Commonwealth Army was the only real army in the field. The French had long ceased to reflect the army that won at Verdun, and when you consider how much they had suffered its to be understood in a way although this didn't happen in the same scale in other armies. The American Army was green and had not really had time to fulfill its potential in both experience and deployment and thus earned few battle honours. When the great spring offensive was launched by the Germans in 1918 it was absorbed and repulsed by the British Army who were the focus of the German intent as the Germans believed if they defeated the French, the British would fight on, whereas they believed if they beat the British then the French would concede. At this point the US Army were not strong enough to have even been considered in the equation. The last 100 days and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line was a mostly British effort as the hard lessons of the previous four years enabled them to employ the All Arms battle tactics which were to eventually break the Germans ability to fight. This and the fact they had been systematically starved by the Royal Navy's blockade. Just read the history and look at the maps. There's not much to mention the US apart from its future potential. A lot has been posted about the Americans and the war by gamers brought up on post ww2 American patriotism and its natural to for them to brag about "saving our limey asses"! However the Great War is a subject deeply embedded into the British psyche, way more than the second war. It was a bigger effort, more Britain's served between 1914 - 1918 than did 1939-1945. Also, more died, the British Empire lost nearly one million men, every family in the islands lost someone, whole communities had nearly their entire male populations wiped out and therefore there is not a single town village or city in the UK without its cenotaph where the number of named dead even in small communities is staggering. The Americans cannot understand the Great War in the same way as they don't understand the effect that level of loss has on a country (apart from maybe the civil war), and its therefore no wonder to me that the Americans may have gone into the next war with a little less regard to casualties than their British counterparts who had suffered the horrors of the last war for four years. It is therefore nothing but arrogance that they may claim to have won the Great War after losing 360,000 killed and wounded, compared to the British Empires nearly 3 million. Right I'm done!!!

i feel i need to remind everyone of history here. i have studied both world wars extensively and i can tell you this: while yes, the americans did help win the first world war, the germans lost because of their economy falling out from underneath them. they were not prepared to sustain longterm warfare, unlike in ww2.

and do i really need to remind people that some americans volunteered to serve in the foreign legions of other nations just so they could do something. did any of you ever hear of L'escadrille? it was one of frances premiere air combat units and consisted of americans.

(just to tell you all i am a canadian and am very proud of my country for its efforts. but i feel it necessary to remind people of history every now and then)

    uspatriot7 is right, basically.
We did need the help to break the stalemate and thank our American brothers they came. USA Didn't want to get involved because it was, to start with, a European War, America saw no real threat to themselves until the end, and they probably had faith in us brits ending it sooner, but as soons as they did join in they helped end it pretty quickly, so don't fight with the facts people; USA helped us and France win that war with little to no training. The game itself, on the other hand looks unique and interesting, and I personally will be watching it's development.

listen al u USA haters-georgeroach,mikees1,riotmaster1-ur all just jealous cuz we saved ur scrawny european A**. We came in illequiped and with no expierence in trench warfare, and we still destroyed the germans. ever hear of Sgt. Alvin York- he single handedly killed 20 germans and captured 45, whom he marched back to camp with his .45 pistol, or eddie ridenbacker-who had 26 arial kills and the americans only fought in the last year so do the math, at that rate he would of beaten the red barons 80 if he started in 1914 not 1918. my props to my cousin brits u held out against the hun vallently. but dont FFFing dis us americans cuz we saved the allies in WW1 and WW2. If it werent for us u'd all be living in a german superstate right now.

The yanks came to France all cocky saying "yeah we'l break this" only to get a pasting off the jerries when they tried tacticts we'd abandoned in 1914! And we told them so but they didnt listen!! Rather like when we sold them radar during ww2 and they didnt put any faith in it and along came pearl harbour! The french were next to useless (as they are in all wars!) and to riotmaster- the germans were not numericaly supperior nor better equiped. The 303 lee enfield rifle was the most feared and accurate and long ranged rifle of the war. German soldiers qouted later said that in the hands of troops who knew how to use them they were as good as having machine guns. They were that good an upgraded version was still being used in ww2. Ww1 was an artillery war, bobming by plane didnt become widespread until 1916, the plane was only really used as an observation and reconasance platform until then, German and British pilots used to wave at each other in the earlier stages! Later though they started taking hand guns up until finaly the syncrinised machine gun was put on british planes to fire through the propellor. I would like be very interested to see if the use of gas is in someway portrayed in this game as this was another unique feature of this war which i think could translate rather well. im looking forward to this more so than call of duty 5 but not as much as brothers in arms hells highway. If Too end all wars has some form of squad combat then that would be the icing on the cake as it is though if this game takes off i think we can pretty much expect ww1 themed fps's to be milked the same as ww2.

1st,id like to say that WW1 was not only about trenches, in 1914 there was none,it was just the massive german offensive in which the french and brits held just close from paris which the cabs helped to transport the troops. this war was mainly about artillery and bombers. This war was also the biggest battle done in history in which more than 2 million troops would face each other in plains (aftetr the french offensive in Alsace-Lorraine) thats just 1% of the war. Canada(unlike states before) did participate from day 1. They were part of the british empire and conscript 600 000 troops which considering their po at that time (12 millions) is the biggest man war effort in history even to this day. (except WW2) So this war was alot about non stop running foward with millions of guys to position the enemy artillery and then send the cavalry(yes believe it) to ruun them down. etc... it would be to long to talk about. bottom line is. it could be the best war game yet.

riotmaster1, I totally agree with you, Americans only slightly sped up the end of the war, people don't seem to realize that at first the Portugueese had more men in France than the U.S.A did! Alongside this it was only in 1918 when the Americans' actually had a decent sized force. They also fought only in France, us (Brits) and the French fought in Turkey, Italy, Eastern Europe, Wesrtern Europe and to a lesser extent at the end of the war Russia.
