Sega exec 'concerned' Wii is a fad

[UPDATE] US marketing VP says he worried about the longevity of Nintendo's platform...but reassures public the company will "fully support" the platform.

The Wii is outselling the PlayStation 3 5-to-1 in its home country of Japan, companies like Disney Interactive are opening Wii- and DS-focused studios, and the Wii is all but impossible to find in stores. However, that doesn't impress one man.

This week, Sega's US vice president of marketing, Scott Steinberg, told Reuters that he's "concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool," and that he believes that developers will run out of ideas by the end of this year or the next.

Steinberg told the news service, "How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or five years from now, or 10 years from now? The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple of years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3."

He threw his hat into the ring as to which platform Sega believed would triumph in the console wars, declaring that PlayStation 3 would be the winner. "There's a lot to exploit there," said Steinberg.

[UPDATE] After the Reuters piece set message boards alight, Steinberg clarified his statement. "Sega has been behind the Wii since day one," he told GameSpot in a statement. "If we don't realize its true potential, we will have missed a great opportunity to expand creatively and that is what I was cautioning against in the Reuters interview. I'm not just putting the responsibility of innovation on Nintendo. It's on Sega and all the publishers and developers as well to carry that flag."

    So many of you just aren't taking in to account that many of the really memorable systems didn't have an extremely strong start-up library. It's only been out for a year. The Wii's unique interface kind of doesn't allow for instant-release hits every week. And that's fine with me. Besides... this fight isn't really fair anyway because for some reason we have a PS3 vs. Wii fanboy battle. The notion that PS3 is going to surpass Wii is just silly to me. And Brad... all of those games you just named out are games I and several other people have seen though. Sure they look flashy, but games like Heavenly Sword have a terrible framerate. And most are games marketed to different markets, meaning that no one is going to buy a system for the sole purpose of playing just one game. The Wii will have its day, it just hasn't come yet. It seems more likely to me that the PS3 is a fad. It only sold so much the first few weeks because old faithfuls and college fratboys in the Young Republicans Club didn't think it'd be too cool of them to buy a system that was $250 in comparison to $600. Trust me. That's all true.

    The Wii is a gimmick designed to get Young Familes to purchase. Sure the Wii has motion sensing technology but how long will that be fun? The Wii will die within the next year

    Well honestly... I only got the Wii Because I was obsesed with Zelda... but it is the only game I have for the Wii and seriously its got so much dust. I my self already find it dated! very dated! Still they were and are so many games on PS2 and GC that amazed me and Nintendo is a star in everything they do hell most of the games that I truly enjoyed in a GC were nintendo. Lets wait a little bit long until good games like Smash bros and Galaxy come out and then slowly see what there is to offer. I think nintendo made a system like that so they could obtain a very diferent customer base from PS3 and 360.

    I'm a 360 owner myself, and I think I bought the right console for my needs. This said, I'm still in two minds about the Wii.

    On one hand, it's easy to see it falling into the trap of being a 'party game' console, without any groundbreaking 'killer app' titles to keep hardcore gamers satisfied. Then again, i went to a gathering at a friend's place the other day, and the entire family contingent there was going berserk taking turns and watching people on the Wii. I mean EVERYBODY. 40 year old guys, grandmothers, kids. I have NEVER seen that sort of interaction around an Xbox360 or PS3.

    Nintendo have reached a whole new audience with this, and kudos to them for it, but damn it then I just want to go home and play kickass games like GoW and Oblivion. I dunno.

    Looking at what is on the horizon for the 360, I see many awesome titles - Darkness, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Halo 3, etc. All looking to be kickass gaming experiences. I just don't see any forthcoming games for the Wii that promise that same level of depth and breadth in terms of a fulfilling gaming experience.

    Hopefully I'm wrong, because as a proud owner of my now dusty SNES and N64, I know what greatness they can be capable of.

    That's not a fair comparison dude, the PS3/360 aren't just more powerful than the Wii. They're waaaaaay more powerful than the Wii. The Wii's technically almost as powerful as the Xbox but in reality it's more comparable to the PS2..

    Yeah, it may start to look outdated compared to it's competitors, but remember the PS2 had to face competition from the much more advanced Xbox and Gamecube, and it still came up on top in the end due to its vast library of enjoyable games, so hardware shouldn't be an issue anymore. But it doesn't mean Wii doesn't have its opponents breathing down its neck. The 360 has so far portrayed a huge amount of popular and fun titles that should keep its share of the market afloat for time to come, and has a very intuitive and hassle-free online service for gamers, and while the sales of the PS3 have been lacklustre so far, there's still plenty of time for developers to learn more about the PS3 specs and provide great gaming experiences, and we know Sony will maybe not now, but eventually start to drop the price of their console.

    Actually yeah, the Playstation 3 has Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Lair, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, VF5, Tekken 6, ESIV: Oblivion, Uncharted, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. These are just ones off the top of my head and they are either out now or are going to be released THIS year. The Wii has Zelda(a GC port) and RE4(a GC Port) and.........what else? Oh yeah, SSB: Brawl and Mario Galaxy MIGHT come out this year.........but those are just 2 games and they are somewhat lacking in design ambition. The Wii maybe cheap but you get what you pay for..

    People are saying that the Wii lacks good games, but has anyone actually looked at the PS3? I can't think of many exclusively good games on that console, and whats the deal with the dodgy six-axis concept. All I can say is tried but failed.

    The nintendo Wii is also excellent value for its price, it may have inferior graphics, but the price reflects that. PS3 is way overpriced, and it proves just how greedy Sony really are.

    Both consoles have good games on the horizion, but due to affordability issue, the PS3 will struggle to compete with the Wii in the long term.

    I see nothing wrong with the Wii to be honest. It has a wide choice of games, not all of them use the flicking of wrists and such to play, and those that do are a pleasure to play.

    Sure there are games which only really existed due to the Wii's functionality, such as Wiiplay, and that may make the games seem gimmicky to some, but they're incredibly fun, and I get as much time and enjoyment out of these as I do with many other games on other formats. The Wii has opened up a whole new range of games, while retaining the old range too. WiiSports is an example. Just because the new scheme is there, not all developers HAVE to use it. Look at Zelda, it's the same formula as it ever was, and it works fine on the new controller. The new controller can also be used as an old style one, without the middle section holding the Buttons and Dpad together. It's silly how people say "Oh these ideas are going to run out in a few years and the Wii will be deaded". WE DON'T WANT NEW IDEAS every single time, we want our games like Sonic and the Secret Rings, Mario, Zelda, Dragon Ball Z. Just because something's there, we don't have to use it. I don't see how old style games can't be made for the Wii, infact there are already tonnes out there, we can still have all the games like Prince Of Persia, James Bond, Grand Theft Auto etc. The Wii is fine for any type of game to be honest, and it's time many people realised that.

    I owned all the last Gen Consoles, and many others before that such as the MegaDrive, PS1, etc, and i've not had a problem with the Wii control-wise. Anything's possible nowadays, unless you're just too lazy to do it. And although I LOVE Sonic the hedgehog and Sega, can i just say; Cough* Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 *cough. I also believe the 360 will win this Generation over the Playstation 3and possibly the Wii. it had more of a Head start, and is much cheaper. If you want a powerful machine graphics wise, upgrade your computer and get Half Life 2. Oh and sorry about the huge paragraph in the middle, My HTML is not well formed apparently ¬.¬ so I can't split it. Silly I know.

    RPG Worshipper is right on the money about the Wii, I see it as only another GameCube with many unimpressive games too and Elite Gamer was definitely right about the graphics, though the Wii might be 2x as powerful as the GC most games look like N64 or DS titles for some reason..

    Wii will only sell good for a short period....by end of this year when tons of 360 and PS3 much better games come out Wii will only appeal to kids or old folks who not interested in serious gaming. The shallow and limited creativity of Wii games will not satisfy most of the teenage or adult gamers out there. In the end it will still be 360 and PS3 battle for 1st and 2nd place while Wii cry over its pitiful motion sensor idea. The idea is fresh but sad that they not manage to fully utilize its potential but coming out with bunch and bunch of childish game instead.

    It seems that I will add my 2 cents to the debate, certainly adding up all of the 2 cents that are in here.

    There is no doubt that the Wii is fun to play. I played Wii sports at a friends house and when I went home I was looking at buying one. By the time I got there, I didn't want to because there is only so much one can do with what it has.

    The computer industry (and I will lump consoles into this group as well) is forever pushing the limits of technology. Just take PC games and software as an example. If you want to upgrade to the latest version, you need better hardware to support the new software. They are looking at better looking, better sounding games, more involved story lines with characters that are able to outsmart most average players and create more and more realistic environments.

    The Wii is pushing this boundry already. The only way forward for them, other than pushing the hardware to the limits (which is not far away, if people are saying it is very easy to program for) is to make sure that the unique gameplay style it has is preserved, but then how far can you push swinging a remote around.

    The Wii will continue to sell, but it will be a fad and nintendo will be happy with what it acheived. It is very possible though this is an interim machine, take a game cube, add a little more function ality a faster CPU and a slick looking case, a funky new controller and it will sell well for a couple of year. Then out comes "Wii 2, Wii Too my thoughts are) which will upgrade again. Perhaps there is more to this fad than we know. But with the Power of the 360 and PS3 yet to be fully realised you know they will be in for the long haul and will keep selling, no matter if the Wii outsells them.

    But don't count Nintendo out I am sure that the Wii was never intedned to be a long term investment (Well let us hope not).

    quite frankly i think that this has alot to do with how well Wii is doing. because its doing so well people always try and analyze why and predict its demise. its a good system that provides a new way of immersion to gameplay. I think that as long it has that and gets some core gamer games out then it will be here to stay point blank. If someone can create a sword slasher rpg or something and make it work well i dont see why it wont stay around for even as long as the ps2 did...

    The WII is a fun family console, but what do you do when your alone? if your playing with your wii you look like a pervert half the time and aside from your arm getting tired from all of the "inovative" controls your still bored. there are few if any inovative games with intresting story line to motivate you to play, there is no online support to speak of so while fight night on the wii, online would be totally awesome. the fact of the matter is, despite the overwhelming success of their console nintendo has yet to provide anything that would compell me to pick up the console i bought back in november. so until they add some multiplayer 3rd party games, it stays with my 8 and 12 year old brothers who play wii sports, get bored and go back to playing gamecube games on the wii that after all was said and done with a game cost me as much as my 360 that i do play everyday and enjoy.

    I would of got a wii but the graphics suck. they are the same as the gamecubes. I don't understand why they couldn't make the same system except with better graphics. the price wouldn't change that much.I think it would be able to maintain a reasonble price if (unlike the ps3 and 360) ONLY played videos games and had online multiplayer. we don't need blueray players and all the extras we just need the games(and graphics)...DONT RESPOND WITH BLURAY IS NEEDED FOR GOOD GRAPHICS BECAUSE 360 STILL HAS GOOD GRAPHICS.

    Wii will continue selling because of the games that will come out later. The invevitable Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Metroid etc. games from Nintendo is what will make Wii even more popular. Think about the DS. Everyone said how the DS was just a gimmick and the PSP would outsell it. Guess what? The PSP never outsold the DS, the PSP will never outsell the DS. If anything, the PS3 will die. The PS3 was a fad that died out as soon as people bought the PS3. Sony kept bragging about how awesome their console would be and, well, that just didn't happen.

    Elite Gaymer or what ever ur name is, if u really knew anything about this gaming business you would know what ur spouting out is crap. I agree that up until now there have been nothing but minigames family oriented stuff. but you look at that as a bad thing. THe Wii is a system that does not try to battle with the PS3 or the Xbox. I personally think that the Wii shows most of its appeal as cheaper system. This way u can play whatever u want on the other systems in HD and still have the funtionality that no other system Including ur holy grail of a PS3. THe games will def shape up though, like the DS it had crap for games the first year but after that things blew up and now its the best selling handheld of its time. The PSP does not measure up to that and most likely wont in the future. I think the once some company can get the FPS Sword Fighting thing down and get it right people will be all over it even after a years time. When it comes down to it this console war is about games which the both the Wii and the PS3 currently dont have. oh and the 20% is bullcrap. puting games face to face on the 360 or the PS3 the quality doesnt look to different. in alot of cases the 360 looks better. Sonys problem is their price point and no kinda marketing or the consuner knowing about the Product is going to create more sales. If the ps3 gets some good games, and that 100-200 dollar price cut realy does happen then maybe ill even get one. Point blank sony lost alot of its fan base cause it lost alot of exclusives. thats prolly where ur 20% comes from. like i said the war is about games so i think after this year they will have them and the wii will be here to stay

    Living Machine your a moron, wii is a fad, all it has its is controller and its got new gamers hooked like a slinky for a 5 year old. Eventually with crappy game titles for 2008, and PS3/Xbox360/PC raising their level of gaming, Wii's best will look like crap. PS3 is not even being used to its full potential, only at 20%. Also with games like lair, ninja gaiden, warhawk, and the new online craze known as Home, PS3 will be great by 2008 probably 2nd behind 360. And Sega hates Sony because their the reason for Sega quitting on their own console. Most wii games are short and only one wii game is only capable which is not even out yet. It has gamecube's hardware with N64's graphics for most games. The controller basically looks like a TV remote and will require developers to make games for it. This will be how the wii will die.

    I've only ever seen the Wii as a slimmer, white Game Cube. Nintendo can't seem to look past these family oriented games (with the exception of games like Metroid and Resident Evil). Because of this, I think that the Wii will come up short. How can you compare Super Mario Galaxy to Halo 3 or Super Smash Bros. to Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction? Eventually everyone will see through the so-called "innovation" of the Wii, and they will realize that it's just another Game Cube, with dozens of unimpressive games.

    Yeh i have to agree with the sega guy, that the Wii is gonna die out eventually.

    But thats not the point, what nintendo did was create a larger gamer community, the WIi will die out, but when nintendo comes out with their next new idea, people will remember how fun it was to play the Wii with thier family.

    It is up to the developers to make great games. They have the hardware and it is up to the programmers to be creative with it.

    The only thing that seemed like a fad, was the PS3. It was a know fact before it came out that it would be the future...yeah, so now that everyone is over that little rumor, the ps3 is nothing more than a funny joke that is starting to be forgotten like Giant Enemy Crabs.

    sad fact for 360 and ps3 owners is the wii isn't going to look 'outdated' and it will only look so when wii 2 arrives. A simple comprassion can be drawn with the ps vs n64. Was there any such arguements then that the ps looked 'last-gen' ? No, because it was bringing out awesome revolutionary games. The same can and given a year will be said of wii.

Seriously, I know he means nothing but business talk when saying what he did... but in all respects, you can't knock on someone for tryin something different when you work for Sega, a company that was all about such bravery at one point... and now he claims Sony will be the future of gaming?!

    I feel ill thinking that PR lackeys are suggesting the ideas rather than the troopers who actually create the games. This once great industry is becoming as bad as American politics...

    Does anyone feel like the Wii was over hyped and Nintendo didn't really deliver on their promise? I expected it to be better than this, by which I mean the system itself. The Wii doesn't look like it's set up ( or built ) to last longer then two years. It sort of looks like a money machine..I don't know.

    Good gracious! It's NOT just the graphics that make the XBOX 360 and the PS3's hardwares stand out, it's the memory, the processing. What made driving in the original Halo so fun was the physics, what made State Of Emergency good was the amount of panicked pedestrians running and screaming, and MGS2 would've been almost NOTHING with the AI, settting, and scope of last last gen. Don't feed me this "gameplay over graphics" BS, the two evolve hand in hand, from pixels to polygons, from Unreal Engine to Havok.

    What console isn't a fad? Wii will have it's run on the market and Nintendo will improve on it and make Wii 2 ... This is the market of video games. Just enjoy today and look forward to tomorrow! How long do we expect a $250.00 console to go? Three years seems like a good deal!

    I worry about its longevity too. It seems like the only games to come for it are those "collection of minigames" types, like mario party and wario ware and WiiPlay/WiiSports. Games like that last only so long... It needs more serious titles. Personally I'm psyched for Soul Calibur Legends, but any game will do, it just needs to show us it can have real games, too.

    Actually, yeah, Sega's right....just look at Nintendo's first party support for the GameCube: Nintendo themselves ran out of ideas pretty quick for that system and it had normal controls just imagine how quickly they'll run out of ideas with the Wii. After Mario Galaxy and the next Smash Bros.(This game uses STANDARD controls) I don't hear talk of much else coming up that's worthwhile..
    As for the Nintendo Fanboys on this site(And I know that there are MANY of you crawling around here!): Why are you guys bashing on Sega's awesome Dreamcast? It got many great games in its short life-span and Dreamcast games still come out from time-to-time in Japan, which is more than I can say for the GameCube...which had a long zombie-like life of mediocre first-party games and Zelda: TP being delayed again and again to make it a cheap and easy solution for a Wii launch title...

    Man, this man doesn't know a thing, developers have been making games for what, 20+ years?, and they haven't run out of ideas, thatswhy they're developers, because they have a great imagination to invent games and things, or is this guy thinking that miyamoto will have no idea of what to do in a future game of zelda or mario, duh!.

    And if the motion-sensing controller wasn't a good idea, and probably a way to improve and increase the production of new games then sony would've never copy the idea of a motion sensing controller, Scott Steinbergtard, gg, you are the one without imagination to create games lol.

    ... no. No one is buying it because it is rare. It isnt rare nor is it a collectors item.

    The only limitation on advancement is graphics. You can just as easily make an advanced engine with no graphical upgrades. It just means you have to think about gameplay instead of graphics. Again, companies dont do that because it takes very little to no brains to make high end graphics. It just takes time and looks really cool but as we all know graphics dont mean a darn thing given the sorry state of current games.

    i still have no interest in the Wii. i played it when it first came out at a friend's house - wasn't impressed. i played it again the other night - mario party 8 - still not impressed. i won't knock the system - it's sells are amazing and that says a lot and i'm somewhat interested in playing Resident Evil whenever it comes out, which i can do at my friend's house. but will i ever buy one for myself? no. i'd invest in a second xbox 360 before investing in a Wii.

    another thing, i think a lot of the Wii's success is based on the fact it is a hard to find system. it's this generations furby, tickle-me-elmo, etc.. i believe it'll have a strong year, but by christmas '08, it'll be an after-thought.

    They should put a lot of fighting games in Wii !!!!! where are the fighting games ?? How about put a strap of motion control on the Feet too.. I'm serious. and i wanna play a fighting game with wii remote and a motion control on my feet. !
