Square Enix earnings mixed, no FFXIII 'til '08?

Final Fantasy maker rakes in record sales, but profit falls; unconfirmed reports say PS3 RPG won't be out until next spring--at the earliest.

Two weeks after its massive Gamers' Day outside Tokyo, Square Enix has reported its earnings for its 2006 fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2007. The prior 12 months saw the company's revenue soar 31.3 percent year-on-year to 163.4 billion yen ($1.3 billion), its best-ever annual haul.

Operating profit for the fiscal year was 25.9 billion yen ($213.1 million), up from 15.47 billion yen ($127.21 million). However, due to the vagaries of finance, the company's net profit of 11.62 billion yen ($95.54 million) was actually down 32 percent. That's because during the past fiscal year, the company only had 3.0 billion yen ($24.6 million) in tax write-offs, versus 9.0 billion yen ($74.1 million) the prior year.

In total, Square Enix shipped 16.9 million units of software to retailers during its last fiscal year. As a result its packaged games operating income of 16.3 billion yen ($134.1 million) on 51.3 billion yen ($422.1 million) in net revenue, up from 9.6 billion yen ($78.9 million) on 45.9 billion yen ($377.4 million) the year before. Online games saw 6.8 billion yen ($55.9 million) in operating income on 13.7 billion yen ($112.7 million) in net revenue, up from 5.9 billion yen ($48.5 million) on 15.7 billion yen ($129.1 million) the previous annum.

The AFX news service quoted Square Enix chief financial officer Yosuke Matsuda as saying, "Packaged game sales did well, in particular in North America and Europe, led by such titles as Final Fantasy XII."

Of more interest to gamers is what Square Enix has planned for its next fiscal year--or, more accurately, what it doesn't have planned. According to several online reports--most stemming from an IGN translation--Square Enix president Yoichi Wada told a press conference that Final Fantasy XIII would not ship during Square Enix's current financial year.

"It will take a bit more time," Wada reportedly said about FFXIII. "At the very least, this fiscal year is definitely out of the question." When contacted by GameSpot, Square Enix USA reps claimed they were unaware of Wada's comments and were waiting on official word. "We'll get a translation to you as soon we receive one," was all a rep would say.

    First off the PS3 isn't that much more than a Xbox 360, ohh ooo, a 399$ vs a 599$.. lets be honest here, for some thats as much as a car payment + insurance, or just car payment alone. .. of course the Ps3 comes with more higher tech, and BETTER RELIABILITY.

    even if they do release it sometime next year it'll still only come out 6 or more months later in europe anyway - just like they've done with every other final fantasy. just hope that they release it at the same time worldwide for once

    lol.. i dont mind the, taking there time..still havent beaten ff12 yet, so no rush.. but truthfully.. im not really enjoying it.. the old battle system went hand in hand with the game, and the new system just isnt as engaging. also the story just did not seem as intriguiing.. more boring and repetitive.. two kingoms duking it out.. oh wow.. so exciting.. bleh.. anyway.. ffxiii looks ripped and more modern and kick ass.. i loved the ff7 an ff8 themes and i hope they can get something like that rolling again..

    Have you guys not heard of all the friggin xbox hardware RECALLS? Microsoft says its only 5% but that is pure and utter horsecrap. Just look on electronic consumer sites such as Dailytech.com or Engagdet.com to see the numerous amts of RROD's (red ring of death, i'm sure some of you have experienced it), and its completely random (happens at any time, despite how much you actually use it), and its due to the horrible engineering of the xbox.

    I had a co-worker that was always harping on his xbox360.. TILL HE got the RROD, after only having his for 7 months, and hardly even using it.

    hahaha :/ now he has to send it out, and wait about 2-3 weeks for it.
    I'm sure it won't be the last one for him either, i've heard people exchanging their xboxs up to like 11-14 times.
    RIDICULOUSLY BAD HARDWARE.

    To be honest im not surprised, FFs have been delayed before. What i do hope is that they are taking into consideration making this system for another platform. Not only would it benifit them much more greatly, but it would benift those of use who just cant afford, or would rather not part with, 700 dollars between the game and system. As of now PS3 has the lowest sales, no they are not able to stay on the shelves in alot of places, but even so, i dont think that the amount of people who own a PS3 will get much higher then that of the wii and xbox 360 mostly because of the price. I dont know which one is better and no disrespect to any ps fans, as i am one myself, but is the hardware alll that much more impressive then the other two that it should cost 200 more? it has blu ray which probably is the biggest price raiser, but xbox now has the 120 gig hardrive, and multi disks could aslo be an option as its been done several times in the past anyway. I just think that alot of people will truly be disapointed and miss out, especially since alot of kids ages 14 and up are major fans, and their parents arent all gonna go out and buy them a ps3. I would just like to see them considering it for a 360 or wii, id spend 300 for a wii and game, but not 700. Id love to see a nice price drop on the ps3, but idk if that will happen any time soon : (

    Some of you are saying that SE has let us down. Let me remind you, they have NEVER let anyone down. FFXII was never given a specific release date, just a TBA (mulitple times) which we all know means To Be Announced. Granted that was the closest SE ever came to failing the fans.


    FFXIII was TBA in 2007, and they announced that it will probably be ready spring next year at the earliest. That still means there is a high possibility it will be in 08' or at least in the beginning of 09'. A good amount of FF fans hated FFXII, just because it was new. It's good to try out new things ya know? I didn't like parts of FFXII myself the first time I was playing through it, but since I started playing it a second time, it's MUCH MUCH better.

    I don't think they could spit a FFXIII game out this year, that's not very long! '08 is very reasonable, and what about MGS4, plans of that already being released in '08 too. You can't expect them to be always on time, ok, we can't expect them to be on time for 90% of games these days.

    I traded in my 360, got a ps3, hated it, had it for a month, traded my ps3 back for a 360 and ive never been happier, ps3 is over priced and over rated and im not even a microsoft fanboy, i always had playstation before my 360. The 360 could easy run anything the PS3 does.

    Chill guys, there are only a handful of games that always hit their launch date, and Square Enix definitely has never made any of those lol, but don't worry, it was already set for really late December anyways, so anyone who is any bit of a Final Fantasy fan saw this coming, so lets just hope that it will launch mid-08

    I'm not sure why some people consider this a delay. I always assumed it wouldn't come out this year. Anyone who bought a launch PS3 specifically for this game was deluding themselves. FFXII took about 4 years to develop, and now they have to handle hi-def too. The big question is when it will release outside of Japan.

    i HIGHLY doubt FFXIII will go mutliplatform.....i've heard many rumors about FFXIII being exclusive to the PS3 and rumors stating it is going multiplatform.....i do kno that SE has stated that they would like to try going multiplatform but FFXIII (and FFvsXIII) is still and will most likely remain exclusive to PS3....i kno that the Wii is going to get the next Dragon Quest and all the 360 gets is FFXI....all these rumors of FFXIII going multiplat is just a bunch of nonsense....SE went multiplat not FFXIII

    this could get me to buy a ps3, i want one but the 360 has equal graphics capability, and there arnt enough big games to make me buy it. now all they need is tekken, and im probably sold

    well, at least we know the PS3 will be cheaper when FFXIII comes out! It's kinda funny I already have FFXIII pre-ordered! If they make it for other consoles or not I really don't care... I have a hunch that SE is watching Sony like a hawk. Probably to see if their sales are going well. as for the production in graphics I know that the PS3 can handle the most latest and largest games so if FFXIII gets put on XBOX360 SE is gonna have to dumb it down quite a bit!!!

    a game being delayed? NO WAY! this must be a SHOCKER for every gamer out there... who cares? Zelda: Twilight Princess was delayed for how long? and Halo 2/3 were both held back... it is only natural for a fame to have a release date and then miss it by a few months (years in some cases). oh well... SE knows people will buy this game no matter how long they have too wait! I know I will, and I'll have it on my PS3! that's all i'll need for god knows how long... hell, my FFVII and others still keep me quite occupied!

    Since all (or most) of SE's ffs & kk's were exclusive, it's no wonder they're making the amazing, awesome, great FF XIII for other systems. It delays the game further & rakes in cash. This probably doesn't help sony because nobody will be buying their console for FF. I bought my PS3 for exclusives & elder scrolls, but now I'm thinking Xbox has good online play, good games, and games meant for Sony. (My typing isnt that good cuz i cut my hand and the keyboard is all bloody& it's kind of hard to hit an ampersand with1 handlol.)

    Why do people feel they need exclusives for their systems to justify paying $600 dollars for it. If you need exclusives to feel secure about ur choice in system than u bought the wrong one. I wish All games would come out for all systems but until that day comes I'm not gonna ask God to strike down any cross platform games just so they stay on my system. I really don't understand this phenomenon. DOes SOny or Microsoft pay you commisson for every game that stays exclusive? I own a 360 and if MGS doesn't come to it in some form by 2008 or 9 then i will own a PS3 as well. U dont see praising pagan gods and sacrificing lil children to keep any exclusives on 360. U guys need to grow up. PS3 could have Halo 3 and GoW for all i care. It has nothing to do with me playing the games on my 360.

    If you'd read anything of the Mistwalker interview you'd have learnt that the version of the White Engine FF13 is being produced on is a multi-platform system... which doesn't exactly sound Playstation exclusive.

    Sadly the 13 delayed FF is probably true. But hey we all know the pure bliss that FFXIII will bring, be it 08 or 07. And as far as comments on 360 not being able to handle it,(I know my PS3 will), thats a pretty bold statement. You might be suprised when your buddy with an 360 has a copy of the game later in 08.

    I can't wait for the next installment in the final fantasy series, but I can honestly say I am move impressed with my Wii. Oh well, once the big name games come to Ps3 I am sure it will grow on me again. For now it's more of a media center than a game system.

    FFXIII delayed?...well I'm not surprised, we all know that great games like that are very big, epic, and complicated, so it will be definitly worth the wait, I hope it's as good as ff7, ff8, and ff10......and NOT like ff12 which I didn't really like that much.

    I love ffx series, I love every story in ffx series. I want ffxiii come out as soon as possible. But I know developing game is a long procedure especially big epic games. I think FFXIII will be good since the scenario writer for this game is the same as FFVIII and FFX. I don't care any xbox fans love their box. But please don't keep criticising PS3 without even played PS3. Every one know what will happen if Microsoft dominate the video game market as monopoly is not good for consumer. Yes there is no enough game out for ps3 and everyone is waiting for the price drop, but will $200 be a big deal to a consumer nowaday? Their high price is due to the high manufacture cost, A lot people say blu-ray shouldn't be include in PS3 or Sony force the format to consumer. Sony can just put a DVD drive inside PS3 and sell for cheaper and there will not be a delay on release, they can gain bigger user base and win the console war. I think that way is more profitable and less risk. Why they are taking the risk? I think it because the company's culture, their eager for technology and quality. I hope ps3 wii and xbox can share the market equally. If there is one company to dominate the market I hope not microsoft again. Microsoft already dominate PC market and leave little space for others. I don't think it is a good idea for them to dominate the home entertainment market too.

    And to the guys who keep saying FFXIII will be on 360 *sigh*. FF XIII and FF XIII Versus are NOT coming to 360 no matter how bad you want it. MGS4 is not coming to 360 (at least, not the first version. the inevitable souped up remake is up in the air). There will be like six FF XIIIs. normal and versus matter, there will be four spin offs, (like dirge of cerberus, ugh). One of them is exclusive to the cell phone. That leaves three. Xbox 360 has a shot at getting ports of some of those three. 360 fans abroad you got Armored Core and have yet to get Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4. If you want more and more PS games, surrender your fan boy pride and buy another console!

    its an unwritten rule that any Square Enix game that EVERY FAN WANTS WITH EVERY FIBER OF THEIR BEING (usually a FF original numbered title) is gonna get delayed forever and ever, at least on its North American and European launch. This should surprise nobody. Still thrilled with my PS3. Resistance isn't getting old. The trailer for Uncharted makes me want it BAD. Firmware 1.80 rocks.
