Shippin' Out May 7-11: C&C3 360
Electronic Arts console port of Tiberium Wars tops a light week at retail while Double Dragon, Final Fight, and Sam & Max clean up the downloadable mean streets.
Ordinarily, this week would see the gaming world converged in LA for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the annual glitzy, loud, brash, and proud convention that gave gamers a glimpse at nearly every game they'd be buying in the next year. But E3 grew too bloated for some people's liking, and the organizers this year are paring it down to a fraction of its former size, as well as pushing it back into July.
Perhaps somebody should have told that to the publishers, as this week's slate of new releases is almost as light as if there had been an E3 stealing everyone's attention. The biggest game of the week is Electronic Arts' Xbox 360 edition of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, which was released on the PC earlier this year. The 360 edition represents EA's second attempt to port a successful PC real-time strategy game to Microsoft's latest console, with The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II being the first.
The downloadable gaming sector is a little more active this week, with Capcom's SNES brawler Final Fight arriving on the Wii's Virtual Console, while the seminal arcade beat-'em-up Double Dragon arrives on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Gamers who like a few laughs with their vigilante justice this week will be able to download the season finale of Sam & Max, Bright Side of the Moon, from developer Telltale Games' own Web site. (The game is already available on a rental basis to subscribers of the GameTap online gaming service.)
And while it's neither downloadable nor for sale at brick-and-mortar retailers, Atari Age is now selling Adventure II for the Atari 5200, the unofficial sequel to the original Adventure on the Atari 2600.
