Nintendo developing 124 games

President Satoru Iwata tells the Bloomberg news service some 79 DS, 45 Wii first-party titles are in the works.

One of the more widely used nicknames for Nintendo is the "Mario Factory." The moniker is certainly well-deserved. The Kyoto-based publisher is famous for its robust catalog of first-party games, which feature franchises such as the Legend of Zelda and iconic characters such as the aforementioned diminutive plumber.

So far, though, 2007 has seen Nintendo's flow of self-made games taper off in the wake of the Wii launch lineup. Not counting virtual console releases, less than a dozen first-party Wii games have been released this year, including Super Paper Mario, Wii Play, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Nintendo-made DS games have also been a fairly rare animal, with the class of 2007 being led by the less than acclaimed Wario: Master of Disguise and Diddy Kong Racing DS.

Luckily, though, the Mario Factory will soon be churning out Wii and DS games at a steady clip. Speaking today at a Tokyo press conference following Nintendo's recent earnings report, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that his company currently has no less than 124 games in development. Of those, 45 are for the Wii and 79 are for the DS.

While comforted by knowing so many games are in the pipeline, owners of either platform still want to know when the next wave of DS and Wii games is due. According to the Bloomberg news service, Iwata said the next batch of first-party games is due out at the end of summer--and just before one of the more crowded fourth-quarter release slates in years. No specific titles were mentioned as being part of the batch.

Now that's a dedicated first party developer. That is a ton of games that will lead to some awsome times.

As for DJ_Quack_Quack.........Super Smash Bros on the DS would be one of the greatest moves for Nintendo, because that honestly will make anyone pleased. What a brilliant fantasy.

The long gap of months before some new Nintendo-created releases arrives on the Wii is a little puzzling. I would have thought they would plan a little better, have the releases spaced out more evenly.

... Dude... have you ever even heard BOSE speakers? All hype, no low end. Pick a better comparison.

The best part is that out of 124 games, we can expect a few (okay, a lot) to be good. That makes me happy.

Um from an owner of every console sold in the last ten years (Vboy, gamepark and wonderswan included ) how about manufacturers stop the urination contest of dropping larger numbers than the last guy and get to having an experienced team of programmers work hard on say 5-10 titles , thereby allowing for those titles to be real show stoppers, aka the entire company effort that FF1 was for square, Goldeneye was for RARE, and that any one of the Elder Scrolls games (arena to oblivion take your pick ) was for Bethesda. As Porsche has done for automobiles and BOSE has done for audio equipment, steady refinement of an established and proven concept through research and creativity is what makes for truly great products, not the scatter shot theory that is currently driving the modern software market. Alas I too purchase many more titles than I should to allow for the quality development approach to succeed so therein lies the flaw.

It would be nice to see a sequel to new super mario bros without having to wait for a whole new system!!! Does anybody else notice that nintendo does that now? Mario64 N64, Mario Sunshine, Gamecube And they also do that with the mario karts, smash bros, and they're doing it with Luigi's mansion!!! We need to send them a message and tell them were sick of this!!!

And this is supposed to be good? Anybody can make 7 crappy Mario Party games at once. Nintendo needs to start putting enough effort in their games to make they great, high quality titles. I really don't see how have 100+ games developed at once is going to make this happen.

I just wonder how Nintendo can draw in 3rd party developers. That is where the other systems make most of their money and Nintendo seems to be content to just go their own way. It is definitely a niche system but you need more games than a Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc... to draw in the mainstream gamer.

@Evan4prez - Interesting what you said...

Yes, Nintendo do have a place in the gaming market. If Nintendo were the same as the 360 and the PS3 then we would only receive mass marketed games. The Wii is unique, and has it's own place in the gaming market. I am pleased that Nintendo are producing lots of games...but wasn't Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario intially made for the Gamecube? I have also seen the release list for Nintendo this year up until December 04, and it does not look good. Nights into Dreams, Resident Evil 4 and Umbrella Chronicles should be out this year, but no sign of Metroid or Mario Galaxy. Metroid Prime 3 was scheduled for December 31st, but again it maybe delayed until 2008. I think Nintendo will release Mario Galaxy between December 04 and the 31st as they need to compete with the likes of Halo 3, MGS4, DCM4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. They will be the big sellers this year, but you only need to own one either the 360 or PS3 depending on your preference - Halo 3, Mass Effect or MGS4 and Lair etc...

R3DN1N3 - Check out Alan Wake on the PC and x360. On the PC it uses quad core, different processors for physics, environmental effects, real time weather effects, very clever in it's use. One processor controlling tornados and cars flying in the air. Other processors controlling mist, fog, real time weather effects, day and night etc... Gears of War could be classed as the only next gen title at the moment, especially in its graphics.

As for Nintendo, give them a chance. Wait to see what happens. Me, I do not have any 'next gen' or 'new gen' consoles. I would like a wii and 360, but I am waiting for the right time. I will consider a wii when Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Fire Emblem Goddess of Dawn are released....whenever that is.
