Retail Radar: Time Crisis gunning down PS3s

Latest in Namco's light-gun shooting series pops up on EB Games' online site for the PlayStation 3 with Guncon for a hefty price.

Light-gun shooters have their fair share of both supporters and detractors, as the point-and-shoot action is coupled with generally brief campaigns and bloated prices thanks to the vital peripheral.

However, it appears that at least one publisher may still be willing to bring the genre to home consoles. Both GameStop and GameStop-owned EB Games are listing product pages for "Time Crisis 4 with Guncon" for the PlayStation 3 from Namco Bandai Games America (Guncon is the name of the light-gun peripheral in the Time Crisis series).

The listing states that the game ships November 13, and will carry the gun-toting price tag of $89.99. No other information was available on the Web. When asked about the listing, a representative from Namco Bandai would only say, "Namco Bandai Games America does not comment on rumors or speculation."

The last Time Crisis game to blast into US homes was Time Crisis: Crisis Zone for the PlayStation 2. Time Crisis 4 was released in arcades in mid-2006. Time Crisis 3 for the PS2 was released about a year after its arcade counterpart, putting a PS3 release of Time Crisis 4 along the same development timetable.

In the arcade version of Time Crisis 4, players navigate larger levels by pointing their guns at the arrows on the side of the screen--a first for the series. The game can also support richer graphics and put more enemies on the screen at one time.

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence; nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

I own Time Crisis 2 and 3 for U/C PS2. I also have Time Crisis 2 bundle orange Guncon2 and JPN Black Guncon2. I have tested both games and both Guncon2s, and to my happiness they works on my U/C PS3. =)

Btw, I only tested them on my 29" TV at 480i.

90 bucks isn't that bad. It's a $60 game with a $30 peripheral. If said peripheral is wireless then it's not bad at all... someone compared it to GHII but I don't think that's fair b/c GHII was a PS2 game... of course Time Crisis 4 would be more expensive.

Why the heck would it cost $90 dollars? That seems a little steep to me, Guitar Hero only costed 70, and GHII 80.. and those are surely higher-quality additions than a simple light gun. Ridiculous.

lol i was just thinking they should bring time crisis to the wii. But this is good news except that's too much to pay. It might be different if there were other games to use the gun with, but that's not the case, and you still have to buy another gun to play with 2 people. I had Time Crisis on the ps1 w/ 2 guns and it was a ton of fun, but the only way I'd get this for the ps3 is if it got INCREDIBLE reviews.

I hope they bring the entire library of Namco light gun games to consoles in all their acradey splendor. Namco presents: Quarter devouring gun games of yesteryear. That would be a rocking thing to have on the Wii, am I right am I right?

  • RandyAU93

Based on the recent Xbox 360 releases (or upcoming ones), notably DDR Universe and next week's Guitar Hero 2, the $80-90 price-point for game plus needed peripheral sounds about right. The key, of course, is additional support for the peripheral, such as downloading new songs (for DDRU and GH2) or additional games (like maybe Namco launching a PS3 collection of the original Time Crisis games, either via download or a hard-copy purchase).

  • coollizy

    Posted Mar 27, 2007 6:52 am PT

Holy... $90? I honestly hope that's not the final price... If we're getting to that point, I could buy a new portable for the price of two or three console games.
