Confirmed: Trio of Halo 3 editions, fall release

Anticipated Xbox 360 game will come in three flavors: standard, limited edition with bonus disc, and legendary edition with helmet, plethora of bonuses.

Whether gamers like their Halo 3 simple, with some extras, or in a superdeluxe package, they'll likely all be able to go home happy later this year, as Microsoft has confirmed three editions of Halo 3. Though this may not be a surprise to those who have paid attention to the dearth of details about the game--three editions of Halo 3 were spotted on an online retailer's Web site back in November--Microsoft today divulged further information on the products, including updated pricing.

The publisher also confirmed what many had suspected from some promotional art released in February. Halo 3 will be in stores this fall.

For the ultimate Halo fan, Bungie Studios and Microsoft are offering up the $129.99 Legendary Edition--named after the game's highest difficulty level--in limited quantities. As previously reported, the Legendary Edition will include a miniature replica of a Halo Spartan Mjolnir Mark VI Helmet (pictured), the same type of headgear Master Chief dons.

For $130, Halo fans will also get a collection of storyboard art from artist Lee Wilson. The pieces depict crucial moments from the Halo story.

A pair of supplementary DVDs (in addition to the Halo 3 game) rounds out the Legendary Edition. The first disc adds background to the development process in the form of behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the game and Bungie Studios, and also includes an audio-and-video-calibration utility to maximize home theater performance.

The second bonus disc, which is exclusive to the Legendary Edition, features remastered cinematics from the first two Halo games, along with commentary from the Bungie team. Also included is a featurette on "a day in the life at Bungie" and content from Halo machinima series Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life.

Those who can't afford the arm and the leg for the Legendary Edition but don't mind giving up a finger can drop $69.99 for the Limited Edition. The Limited Edition includes the first bonus disc from the Legendary Edition and a Halo fiction and art book, which expands the series' storyline and details the various critters and factions of the Halo universe.

And for gamers who don't need any bonus materials and just want to blast the Covenant, the Standard Edition, which includes just the Halo 3 game, will retail for $59.99.

Halo 3 has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information on the game, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

When the first halo came out, I was in 5th grade, where for art class we had to make masks. I didn't just make a mask, made a giant life size helmet of master chief that fits on actual human beings. In 8th grade, when god of war came out, I made a small miniature statue ofKratos about to kill someone.

I've started to realize that the real way to get limited edition stuff is to create it yourself.

As hyped as the release for Halo 3 is, I think a $130 special eddition of GTAIV would sell more. Just, getting it out there.

I'll probably end up getting the limited edition or the standard edition. Legendary is way to expensive. I just hope that Halo 3 is much longer then 2 'cos I finished it in a week and that there are none of those annoying like diseased things you know like those little bugs and deformed covenant and humans.

As awesome as getting a mini MJOLNIR helmet is, that alone is the only reason why I won't be getting the legendary edition. I mean, sure, it's cool, but I thought it'd be wearable when I first saw the screen shots of it (boy was I flipping out with the thought of getting a wearable helmet). But now that I find out that it's only a mini version, what's the point? Sure it looks awesome and would look great along with all of the other gaming memorabilia surrounding my "gaming area", but is it really worth spending $130? I'm just having a difficult time convincing myself to put out that kind of money on a single game. Though the collector's edition, that i have no problem pre-ordering. In fact, I should probably do that this weekend. Either way, this is gonna be one hell of a ride.

Actually, the helmet IS the game box.

    Take a peek at this:
    http://www.bungie.net/images/news/inlineimages/HaloLegendaryHuge.jpg

Compare Gamespot's to the one on this page. The helmet is quite large. Granted, you still won't be able to wear it, it will easily fit over all four cases and onto its platform. By no means is it a tiny mantle piece thing.

  • LynchMob09R

    Posted Mar 22, 2007 8:59 am PT

cowbrains788 the helmet is just a mantle piece or to use as just a paper weight it is not big enough to put on your head for one can clearly see that from the pics on the net that the helmet is no bigger than the game box so halo fans don't expect the helmut to go on your head!!!

Over-rated or not... These guys are trying to mke money... and they are sitting on a gold mine. It is more the reasonable for them to 'hype' it up as much as is possible. And to be truthful, Halo 3 on a cover sells magazines, Halo 3 news in an email gets someone to your site. Hype is two way... people putting it out there - and people reacting to it.
If this bothers you and you think it may ultimately make the game disapointing for you - ignore any more updates, features or articles about it. Wait for the, game, get it, and have a blast without Super High expectations.

Wow, alot of gamers disagreed with such a hype set up for such a popular game. Dont get me wrong, halo is written in blood, and will forever be the origional xbox's key console game. But... it is over rated in my opinion, as are many games these days. Do not get me wrong, halo 1 and 2, were great, and many hours on my coutch with my drunk freinds were spent well with this game. But honestly... i feel this is getting a bit crazy... but what can i say, ill personaly my self purchase the legendary just for the fact its valueable and i have respect for the series, but it way out of line, and i couldnt not agree with the last 3 posts posted by members of this website, there disagreements are very logical in this accordance. Its a game... like your over doing it completely... but as the one dude mentioned, 14 year old fan boy bs, yah i totaly agree, and most of the people who are giving into it, are little kids, younger then 16 most of the time, and the game is probly rated M... so yah theres a problem there but who cares... its fun tearing them up on xbox live, also people my age 18 around around there will be giving into the series, because of what we went though with halo 1 and 2, its like we have 2 out of 3 chapters, and you just got to finish it, its the same way with many games. Like Devil May Cry, 1 2 and 3, i had to play them all it just was addicting, and i couldnt wait to see what happend next, the storys are fasinating, so i can completely understand people giveing hype like it has, but halo 3, isnt going to that good, just a game with the same story and extra features with a better game engine to look phenomina, thats about it, the multiplayer will be the same thing... your just paying 130 dolars for extra features the same type of story, same type of multiplayer... nothing nex except the engine and an added story line with some features... so you be the judge.

While I do agree that Halo is a great series of games, I do think it gets a lot of publicity. I mean, come on, there hasn't been a video game product with this much fanfare since the warring days of Sonic and Mario; save for, arguably, MGS. And an extra $70 for a stupid little helmet, concept art, and a couple of DVD's crammed with crap that bungie threw together at the last minute? I'm not saying that it wouldn't be some nice memorabilla, but $70? You know almost any other franchise right now would get laughed outta the modern world for trying to sell a package like that. And dissing on a Matrix movie? Lame. It's not the best movie I've ever seen, but it's better than most of the other crap Hollywood puts out nowadays. It's also not stated very often that during the early stages of shooting the second two were originally supposed to be one movie, so judging them together renders their stories to seem more complete. It's also worth saying that sometimes a well written movie such as the original can inspire a fanbase that gets hooked on memorable characters, and will pay to see those characters even if the story is somewhat lacking. To me, the story in the second two wasn't played out as well, but the characters did a great job of creating their own special charm.

Halo is over-hyped, I can see why people like it and the same with Gears, but they aren't the greatest things ever produced like some say. There are other games out there that could do with some of the publicity that Halo and Gears both receive and, if they were given it, end up just a sucessful as those.

Yet the rabid fanboys jump down your throat as soon as you criticize either of these two games and assume you must be a Sony freak and try and rip you to shreds, in that cute little 14 year old fanboy way, whilst just making themselves look like retards.

Its ok for 360 owners not to like Gears, and to hold the opinion that Halo is no more than an above average FPS, its just an opinion.

""I find Halo is way too overatted. If some other games had that much publicity it would put Halo in the shadows. "

    I couldn't agree more."

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. You think that if they gave some other game the same amount of publicity as Halo that game would leave it in the shadows? No, it would just be a huge bomb and more disappointing the then last Matrix movie with all of it's BS hype. Now that was a bomb, but unlike it... Halo lives up to it's hype so no game with equal amount of publicity would leave Halo in the shadows or even match it except for maybe Gears 2. There's a reason why the Halo games get their publicity, because they are that good. Just because you don't like them, but keep on hating haters... that's what you do!
