Lego goes MMO

NetDevil, toy company team up to build massively multiplayer online "gaming experience"; details yet to be announced.

One of the simplest toys of all time has found a profitable home in one of the most technologically advanced areas of entertainment. Lego building blocks have parlayed their appeal into video games, with the brand taking the spotlight in a pair of Star Wars-branded games from developer Traveller's Tales, as well as several other games over the past decade.

Now, the interlocking toys will venture into another hot avenue of gaming--the massively multiplayer online space. Lego Group today announced that it is partnering with Colorado-based NetDevil to create a "massively multiplayer online gaming experience."

Lego has not yet announced any specifics on the game, leaving the window open for speculation on what the game will entail. NetDevil previously created the vehicular MMOG Auto Assault. However, the emphasis on attracting a younger audience means the Lego MMOG is likely to go the way of Ubisoft's Puzzle Pirates, which has a very Lego-influenced visual style.

NetDevil's Web site says that the Lego MMOG is due out sometime in 2008.

Hm... could be cool if there's a LOT of freedom.

O h wait, it's a MMO, people would DESTROY it if there was a lot of freedom.

This tittle would prolly be much better if it was single player.

And, lemme think about 2007 releases:

    Freedom: Spore
MMO: Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Warhammer 40k

Nah, it will (I'm sorry to say) fail terribly.

No way! They ripped off Blockland so much! Sure, Blockland used Lego pieces, but I mean, Lego is ripping off the concept! It's not fair, now Lego is going to blindside Blockland when it goes retail. Blockland is the original, and free. And I'll bet Lego is going to make you pay to play online. (btw, www.blockland.us)

This game would be awesome if it would let you build anything you wanted from scratch. Maybe you could do missions to unlock new Lego blocks for your collection (or something ) Anyways... this game has a lot of potential if it is done right.

Its got to be free. They will loose a MAJOR portion of their target audience if they charge, which also means its gona be very kid friendly.

As long as the the guys developing this game use SWG as an example of what NOT TO DO, then this MMOG may have a chance..

Sounds good to me. If you can build stuff with Lego, that's awesome. But if you should just grab a funny gun and shoot people, that's not cool at all.

The Lego Star Wars games were fun. Easy, but charming and nostalgic. A Lego MMO could go either way.

I just hope they release a LEGO building game where you build with actual virtual LEGO blocks. I'm sure they'd consider how inexpensive that option would be to the consumer as opposed to buying many packages or buckets of real LEGO blocks. This also means less income... but this is where XBL Marketplace or Sony equivalent would come in. Of course they'd put out new different types of block shapes (which you could colorize and duplicate infinitely). Then once you've built a LEGO masterpiece, you could place many detonation points and watch all those tiny little blocks spray across the virtual room with physics and collisions and all that good junk!

I'd drop sixty bones on that.

By brother is a Lego freak he will be psyched. As for me, I think this game might be good if they put a lot of effort into it.

~GARRYTH~ "funny to many mmo's but there isn't to many fps."

Have you ever heard of the XBOX 360? That thing is like a walking fps! lol

Anyway, this could turn out quite good. It definitely has the potential. As Legir said, if you could make your own characters and settlements from lego, the game will be awesome.

  • Sodium_Free

    Posted Mar 6, 2007 8:38 am PT

i agree with legir, here is so much potential, especially with the sandbox nature of Lego, for user generated content. if they get it right, it will be awesome, but as all things like this before we could be horribly burned.

and on the subject of toy or kid style MMOs, i don't think that anything will lend its self like Lego, Building blocks FTW.

  • Legir

    Posted Mar 6, 2007 8:31 am PT

This has huge potential in the fact that players could litteraly build their own characters and even their own cities/strongholds, but I don't think it'll be as good as it could be.

"Next it'll be GI Joe the MMO, when will it end?"

Hey I thought about that! I thought that would be a cool game!

For the campaign mode you could play as a Hero GI Joe and try and stop Cobra.

Then you could have a Multiplayer VS Mode! You can choose a Hero GI Joe or make up your own GI Joe or Cobra and Fight!

It would be like a Halo battle but think of all the vehicles the GI Joe and Cobras had! All the guns!

A GI Joe game would be awesome!
