South Park goes HD on 360

First-ever high-definition episode of animated comedy to be available free over Xbox Live Marketplace for a limited time; uncensored episodes to follow next week.

Starting tomorrow and for a limited time, Xbox Live members will be able to get lowbrow humor in high definition for free. Microsoft and Comedy Central today announced that starting tomorrow, Xbox Live members will be able to download an episode of South Park in HD from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The episode, "Good Times With Weapons," follows the series' grade-school protagonists as they purchase "authentic" ninja weapons from the flea market and promptly (though unintentionally) use them to injure a schoolmate. The boys are then faced with a dilemma, as they weigh the benefits of seeking medical help for their friend against the drawbacks of being grounded for buying the weapons in the first place.

"Good Times With Weapons" will be available for free for two weeks. DVD copies of the episode in HD will also be given away with the purchase of an Xbox 360 console or HD DVD drive from Best Buy between March 20 and April 3.

In another first for the series, starting next Tuesday, the latest episodes of the 11th season of South Park will be made available on the Marketplace uncensored. Season 11 premieres on Comedy Central this Wednesday with the debut of "With Apologies to Jesse Jackson," in which "the 'N' bomb hits South Park and Cartman fights a midget."

This is a really good episode to present to the MSP-less as an example of South Park in HD. The alternate character and background styles look very crisp and vivid. Even if you don't own an HD display (I just use my computer monitor and VGA cables) this episode is worth the free download in hard drive space (~23min @ 0.99GB).

PoopTete I don't think you can. Unless your tv has the Resolution for high def it really wont make sense to download a high def episode considering your TV isn't made for that. Try it anyways cuz who knows your picture might be a little crisper if it accepts the format, but you still won't be getting true HD.

can you still watch an HD download on an standard definition tv?

It's awesome the way that Xbox 360 has On-Demand movies and TV shows you can download in high-definition, whenever you want.

That is something neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray nor standard DVD let's you do...and that is why On-Demand high-definition represents the future, not discs.

I didn't find the last season of South Park as comical as its predecessors. I hope Season 11 can recapture the majesty.

Not really bothered about downloading an episode of a programme I've seen before - especially as I don't have an HD telly - but I wish MS would pull their finger out and launch this service in Europe! Whilst I imagine the problem may be down to rights, etc, I'm getting impatient waiting for my movie downloads...

this is truly the next generation

    Posted Mar 5, 2007 11:05 pm PT

I'd love to see this EP in HD, I'm not sure how much difference it will make to the standard "Cardboard Cut-out" style of the show (I know it's not cut outs anymore) but that EP has some full on Jap Style Animation in it from memory. Though it's got nothing to do with gaming it's got to do with entertainment.... which is what the consoles are starting to be based around rather then full on gaming, and hey.... it's FREE!!!

    "Proman84

Who cares? What does this have to do with games? It's not even a good sow we're talking about here."

It has to do with games becaues it is downloadable content available on an online 'game' service which supports a 'game' system. Clear? Good. Also, the quality of the show shouldn't be in question since South Park is still some of the best written social commentary and satire on TV. Trouble with people who don't like it is that they mistakenly think the show is just about toilet humor. There is a lot of that type of comedy also, but that is not SPs greatest contribution. I suspect that you don't like it for the aforementioned reason. If so, that's a good indicator of a closed mind. Thanks for playing.

GS suscribers are so mind bogglingly smart I feel like a midget amongst you. Yay Microsoft!

If you have an HD set, then of course you'd want the HD version. It's not about whether the visual style of South Park would benefit from more pixels, it's what you are displaying it on, especially with LCD displays that prefer video to be in the displays native res to look clear.

Im pretty sure that out of all the major shows on the air, south park benefits the least from HD. The new season of Futurama, went it comes back, could really take advantage of HD in a way that improves the viewing experience

If anything it's a step in the right direction for Comedy Central. i hate to even watch sdtv on my hdtv because it looks like crap (barring dvd upconverts). and this one is free so if you don't like it you've spent nothing to find out
