Bloomberg: Sony profits could fall 50 percent

The electronics giant's third-quarter results likely to plummet as a result of losing market share to Nintendo.
By Staff, GameSpot UK
Posted Jan 29, 2007 4:37 am PT

Sony's third-quarter financial earnings results, which are scheduled to be released tomorrow, could be down more than 50 percent from the same period the previous year, reports Bloomberg.

The financial news service surveyed five analysts on Sony's upcoming results, and the median estimate weighed in at 84.1 billion yen (approx $680 million), dramatically short of last year's third-quarter earnings of 168.9 billion yen ($1.38 billion).

Sony CEO Howard Stringer has "failed to fend off Nintendo," the report continues, with the Wii outselling the PS3 two-to-one worldwide.

The company is likely to lose a record 191.9 billion yen ($1.57 billion) from games this fiscal year, compared with a profit of 8.7 billion yen ($71 million) last year, according to the survey.

In October, Sony cut its fiscal-year profit forecast to 80 billion yen ($656 million), a five-year low. Shares in Sony recently jumped 6 percent, the biggest single increase in more than a year.

Alright now he comes the "oh its too expensive, and no rumble what is sony smoking." then the "and duh the wii is winning, it has motion sensing! zomg is so cool, i move, and my cursor moves with me, im going to completely ditch every other system so i can watch a hand move on the screen!!!" i personally own a ps3 and a wii, and the wii got old really fast, i mean me and my friends played it all the time, for like 2 weeks. it doesn't have a whole lot to offer. Theres no online, and the games don't have much replay after you beat them, other than zelda. Thats one game. My ps3 has online, i can watch my blu-ray, and cause my sound isn't working on my computer, i can actually play cd's on it. I mean i have so much more to do on my ps3, and plus the games i think are better, even though zelda does own the crap out of resistance. I mean just give it time when people realise that omg, i can save up for it just like my 360, omg. Plus we have all the same games as the 360 save gears of war. We're getting saints row in may, f.e.a.r, rainbow 6 vegas, elder scrolls, half life 2 and these episodes and stuff. I mean all the good games are coming to my ps3, and because i don't have a 360 cause i hate microsoft fanboys and bill gates with a burning passion. Plus since like a million other people seem to be hypnotized by the fact that you can play halo on it, all i have to do is go over to my freinds house. So don't diss the ps3. Oh btw, who needs rumble. i mean its not like im going to cry over the fact that it doesn't shake in my hand. Im sorry you people can't stick it between your legs and get off like you do with your 360's. PS3 will get its legs, just wait

Here I find many Sony fans , MS fans , Nintendo fans that talk like very intelligent and logical persons. I love you guys , I hope we see great games on all consoles .
This is not a war , I bet you will see better games soon on the ps3 maybe better than Gear of war or other great XBOX360 game or Wii games , so don't be disapointed .
Sony is a great company they know what they do , they are planning for the shining future so they should spend more in game industry like Microsoft did these years to compete with sony and nintendo.

I hope microsoft win this generation however without competition we won't see better games on our systems .

this guy i know, calls himself and avid gamer, went out and bought a wii, then a ps3. i can understand the wii, but waht i dont understand, as he calls himself a GAMER, is why he didn't buy a 360? i mean, he wants to play GAMES. wtf. and the 360 has good games, and better ones coming. with that said... disagree. i cant wait to get a 360. ita has what i want. guess what that is. and if the ps3 can manage to give competition, then fine. monopolies are bad, history has proved.

there is probably 2 reasons to that: The PS3 is toooooooo costy and the wii motion sensing capabilities are beating the PS3's.
Oh, and the PS3 has no rumble. ;(

from what I heard, PS3 would not be compatible with many PS2 games. Nintendo is cool, they DO have good titles and the Wii IS a cool innovative system. But the 360 is also really cool and it DOES have good games and it IS a fun console. Now PS3 needs to match it. If the 360 and Wii could do it, PS3 can, i think Sony just didn't make it to its full potential and then overpriced it.

At last a sensible comment (below) by someone who actually knows about his facts and figures. The point is that Wii buyers are not necessarily those who have changed brand loyalty but either previous Nintendo console owners or those 'new' to gaming i.e. children and really old people (lol). The PS2 has sold over 100 million consoles and one would expect the large majority of them to sooner or later end up with the PS3. ITS CALLED LOGIC.

It has nothing to do with sales of PS3, since they lose ~$250 per unit as a loss leader anyway, but they gain it back on games, the bluray royalties for the games, and royalties on bluray discs. So the more they sell of units at this point, with a short list of games, the bigger the profit reduction is going to be for the quarter.

2 million + units in less than 60 days puts them on a path to pass / catch the 360 in units sold sometime in 2008, and everyone knows the Wii is expanding the market as a whole, not % of market of fixed units, as those with 360s and / or PS3s are purchasing a Wii as well.

koopatroopa1015, the PS3 DOES HAVE backwards capability with most/all PS1/PS2 games. Infact, other developers are considering releasing old games as well like Sega. Secondly, they did not take out the rumble feature as there was a lawsuit against Sony on this. And third how the hell does the Wii have a good games library when there are only two titles worth buying? Honestly, 360 fanboys I can handle but these Nintendo lot really drive me up the wall!

if sony hadn't taken so much out of their system, it would have probably sold at least ALMOST as good as the Wii. But they took backward compatibility out, which will really not help cause people of course play older games on newer systems, i.e. gba games on ds system, xbox games on x360 system, etc.

and they took rumble out and changed nothing about their controllers, so they also suck. and they expect us to pay $500-600? I'd pay it for a system with better controllers and back compatibility, and with a better library of games. But the ps3 has none of that, so forget it. That's why ps3 isn't selling well. It doesn't have features that attract people. The inverse is why the wii is selling so good. People are attracted to it. The cool controllers, good game library, and good price make the difference.

Well obviously, last year sony was rolling in the cash from playstation 2 sales and games flying off the shelves. This year they launched a console which is a major financial drain since they take a few hundred dollar loss on each console shipped. This isn't any more news then if Rockstar announced that GTA 4 is going to sell alot of coppies. DUH!

first of all ppl who are saying the stock s falling obviously have no knowledge of the stock market. the stock rising and falling has no connection to the actual company, and only goes up if ppl buy the stock, and only goes down if ppl sell. it will probaly fall because ppl will loose faith in the company, but for the time being the stock is doin fine. second, tefrin and chubear700, this is the 100% truth and you two are just whining fanboys who cant accept the fact that most ppl dont enjoy spending $600 for a slightly better looking last generation game.

rokkuman09, your comments below typify the arrogance I was referring to earlier. A relatively slow start to a consoles life is not the same as doing bad. If that was the case then why the hell are people still buying PS2's and its games? Initial sales of DVD's and HD tv's when released were also slow but just look where they are right now. Sure the PS3 seems pricey in comparison to the Wii and 360, but its reflective of a long term investment in a 'multi-media' format and not just a simple kiddies games console.

For the record, those of you who think Microsoft has the edge from sheer units sold, it's an unfortunate statement, because it's almost false at this point. Nintendo has sold 4 million Wiis in the amount of time which I think maybe 2 million 360s were sold, and saying they both sold out kind of reflects more on Microsoft's "strategy" to hold back units at the time. Nintendo's got more than enough moment, and a market that kind of puts the 360 in a different position. Msoft has an advantage because it's now entering the 3rd generation of its software cycle. This is when the crazy stuff starts coming out. Not when there are single hits like GRAW, Vegas, Dead Rising, or GoW, but, like, serious goods. This wil be the reason the 360 will keep selling. We all know Ninty's got the 10& under market held. If Sony doesn't get itself back in shape Msoft's going to steal ALL of the 14& up area, and be stuck trying to appease a bunch of tweens. Fiscal losses would be laughable compared to the risk of losing user base. So all you Sony fans out there should be happy, Sony's probably going to go deep into the red to try and make you guys happy. Oh, and Dolacide:
If Nintendo lost money on a console it would go the way of Sega. Just so you know. It's called market strategy, and capital. Good words to look up. Oligarchies aren't big board games.

You guys really think gamespot is so against sony, if you guys would go back a year there was alot of bad news stories about the 360 too, gamespot gets the news and tells it like it is, they are not making this story up. Go anywhere right now, you can find a ps3, why, because they are too high priced and no one is buying them, but try to find a Wii, you can't because they are low priced, and selling out everywhere, no one can keep Wii's in stock, even the 360's are selling great, because there are alot of great games already on it and coming in the months ahead. So, yes I can see why sony is in the red, and keep falling further in the red. Common Sense.

listen whats going here is very simple, the Wii is outselling the PS3. is exactly whats has been going on with the DS and the PSP ,Nintendo is out selling Sony on both of their newer systems,we all know the DS is probably one of most successful,if not ,the most succesful handheld Nintendo has ever produced, but the Wii is outselling the PS3 no question, and theres plenty of PS3's on stores, the Wii ? go try finding one good luck, but if Nintendo continues outselling the PS3, until at least the 3rd quarter of this year, well.... you can declare Nintendo the winner, but right now Nintendo has the momentum and boy is a strong one,we"ll have to wait and see until sometime later this year, around 3rd quarter 2007 thats my opinion

---Jermwarfare

"This is soo funny because i remember when a system called the Xbox 360 came out and had no games no systems and no fan base...Oh wait that was a year ago, and now look at them." ---Incubus420

"They cannot afford to continue to bleed hundreds of millions every quarter at this rate they would be 2 billion in the red by the end of the next fiscal year for their gaming division."

"I'm getting sick of gamespot and its fanboy news - notice how it never reports on anything anti 360 even though it has had its problems."
--- smidsy85

----------------------------
I was a PS3 holdout. I waited until the PS3 release to make up my mind. Then I saw the behavior with the extremely long lines & the violence & terrible ebay prices making it appear as if it would take me 3-6 months to get a PS3. Looking back, it sounds like a big waste of time & people got hurt for nothing. In fact, the sell-out craze on release is pretty much what pushed me to getting the 360 because I thought it would take forever to get a PS3!

I also saw Gears of War & I wanted to play that game. You could see the 360 games were beginning to perculate. And even though I tried hard to resist the 360 & stick to my plans of getting the PS3, I could not ignore my desires for a 360 with Gears..

Originally, I was going to buy the PS3 & get RFOM & then stock up on PS2 games & get rid of my Xbox & Xbox games, seeking out the PS2 equivalents of the Xbox games (except Halo). I figured I would have to tap the PS2 games for a long time, until PS3 games started to come out. However, this plan would have require more patience than I'd be capable of producing.

So my next logical step before Xmas: get the 360 & maybe this summer the PS3 price will drop & I can get a PS3. So far I'm glad I joined the 360 love wagon. It was the best action to take at the time & it appears that it still is.

I was very skeptical about the Xbox 360 when it was released. I figured Sony's PS3 would kick its @$$ & I really wanted to wait until the PS3 was out to make up my mind. After the 360 was released, I had heard a lot of problems with it. A Fry's Electronics was even telling me last summer that they were having to return all the Xbox 360s because they were breaking, further convincing me that it was a junk heap.

Right now, I think Sony would have to be an idiot to bring their debt to $2 billion in the red just to compete. They won't recoupe their losses over the next few years. By the time they get back to making profit there will already be the post-nextgen console wars going on.

M$ has the edge. They were early to market, they had time to brew the development cycle & get games built for it. Plus as the nexgen website
pointed out, they have 10 million sold, more than both the PS3 & Wii combined. The fact that Sony released the PS3 with only 2-3 games for
it & then have its customer base wait another year really makes Sony's response a 2 year delay rather than one. Ie, 1 year delay when M$ brought
the 360 out + 1 year for the best games to come out. By the time the PS3 gets started, M$ will already be at its peak, attracting even more gamers.

Furthermore, game designers will want to make the most bang for the buck. The area with the most exposure is currently the 360. There are 10 million sold, so you'll make the most money. The PS3 version only has around 2 million, according to the website. I think most game designers want to go after the whale here. They might produce PS2 versions over PS3 versions
or a PS3 version will simply be last or brought out later.

I've come from a PC gaming background & even when I played consoles back in the 80's, like the Atari 2600 & a few consoles in the early 90's, this was always the problem with the consoles: the risk of buying the wrong one & then having fewer games to play on it. Like those folks who bought a Vectrex or Intellivision or an Atari Jaguar. You want to get one that has the mass market appeal so you can get the support of game developers & sustain your system for years to come. Like the 2600 seemed to last quite awhile. And here we are full circle with the same kind of issue: Higher priced consoles produce fewer games because the demand isn't high enough and there isn't enough money to be made for game designers. You think Sony would know this given the history of console games. One of the reasons I moved to the PC was to get away from this madness with consoles, like brand loyalty & developers playing favorites with one console over another. If you just play PC games, you don't have to deal with any of that. I hope I don't have to go back to the PC again in the near future. So far though, it seems that the 360 & Wii will be enjoyable for a few years. For Sony to keep from going "$2 billion in the red", they'll probably have to produce a PS3-"lite", take out the high-tech blu-ray element & get price _under_ the 360 or near the Wii, then maybe somebody will buy it.

OMFG GameSpot must be biased because they report bad news about the PS3 and the only way to prove they aren't biased is to report worse press about the 360! If they report how many games the 360 sold next month they are definitely bias to the 360 because they should only report good news for the PS31!11!!!1...assorted ramblings that require no tought etc...

Do you hypocrites even think before you type comments? Just because you don't like reality doesn't mean it must be wrong. Tough nuts.

This estimate is quite hard to believe, IMO...

I never owned a PS, so there is no need to call me a fanboy (unless it has to do with Nintendo), but I believe that this year, the PS2 will still go strong, and sell quite a number of games. Not to mention the PSP, which also adds to the total number.

These analysts appear to be looking to the new-gen systems only,
not counting possible attention that is still there with last years systems.
Someone who can't afford a PS3 (or Xbox 360... or even an HD TV for that matter), and doesn't want to shake his arms around to play games (but man! Is it fun!) will still buy games for the PS2 he already owns.

These analysts try to predict a market share in games using only half the machines which still sell games...
that is just stupid.

I think they're too blindsided by looking at numbers all day to be able to use common sense.

Well I been a big PS Supporter ever since PS1, I for one believe that sony has been evolving the Video game industry from day one, I mean The move from cartridges to CDs was a bold one but look at what happened. It revolutionized the industry, and the PS1 pretty much laughed at all the consoles of its time and then some. The PS2 was almost the same story by adopting DVDs and the major jump in Graphical power and backward compatibility (which i believe had not been done before on a home console), The PS2 was the whole package and it more or less it still is, It lso majorly helped to popularize the DVD format. PS2 also up to this day its the king of the hill considering that every console out there is technically more powerful its no small achivment. The only area that the PS2 was pretty much sucker puched by Xbox was the online, hands down Xbox got that on lock down, but thats the past.

I tried waiting on sony to deliver the goods for a while and to tell you the truth I now am worried for the PS3. I believe that the oney ear that the 360 got head start MS leveraged it in a major way, sony just delivered broken promis after broken promis again and again, giving MS an even greater avantage. There really isnt a killer app for the system yet (hopefully for summer 07) and beyond that it keeps lossing exclusives to the 360 sony is no longer in a position of leadership and instead its now a competitior (the one with the shorter end of the stick at that) I mean the Wii its a very original and VERY afortatble system ( in a class of its own IMO) and the 360 has clearly gained the upper hand atleast in america and it seems the same its happening in europe and MS is dead set on making magic happen in japan. I believe that Sony has over estimeted the gamers loyalty for the PS name this time aroung, although the PS3 is no doubt the more powerful system, developers keep "jumping in" to the 360 love wagon and if developers support a platform so will the gamers cause ultimatly games are what sell the systems.

But beyond the technical capabilities of each console, sony is missing a very important element in their equation, a unified easy to use and yet very powerful online service cuase I believe that thats what te next gen is all about, having this is just as importamt as having good games this time around. Given that not only has the 360 has had a year head start add to that, that support for MSs console is growing at an accelerated rate, they already have years of experiance and a good stablished online service, MS is also adding Vista to its live service soon giving MS even more stength, (Not that its anything new to PCs Cause PC have even more years of experience in online gaming then MSs Live service but it will make it easier for PC gamers and console gamers alike and use a familiar system on both the 360 and their gaming PC not to metion crossplatform gaming)

It all boils down to sony being in a up hill battle against a tough compettitor that obiouslly learned from past mistakes and its determined to put up a serious fight this time around. The fields are all but even this time around and sony NEEDS to bring out the big guns sooner rather then later ASAP and and make their system more accesible to the abverage joe at not more then 499 for the 60GB version and 399 for the 20GB0 that ought to even the fields price wise (one can only hope). even though you probably cant find a BlueRay player at a 599 price tag Sony needs to reallize that the PS3 is Ultimatelly a gaming machine, also kick the Playstaion Network on to the lightspeed turbo boosted gear, and bring out the big name games with support for their network ASAP!!! if they are to stand a chance on the next gen war.
Even though the PS3 is a machine designed to stay for 10 years or more (or so sony says) most people now cant pay prices from 10 years in to the future.

As of now the Next Gen war has not started, each console has only layed the cards on the table and its no question that the 360 was dealt the better hand, by summer 07 sony needs o fix their prodution and pricing problems and their online service and image cause if by xmas 07 PS3 perfoms poorly MS will hand their @$$3$ back to them, I was a loyal PS follower up untill a month a go, I dicided to "jump in" to the 360 loving wagon, I would love to keep being a loyal follower but not untill sony has something other then " BlueRay, a 600 dollar price tag and pretty much no games" to offer. Its definitly gonna be an intresting next cupple of years for the video game indutry kind of remingd me of the last great showdown of the 16 bit era (SNES vs Genesis) cause the 8 bit, 32/64 bit, and 128 bit were pretty much one sided and 4 bit and before are in a class of their own. and after my 2 cents I have a question. how many bits are we at now with the Wii, 360 and PS3?? any body knows?

This isn't really new news. We all knew that the development costs of the PS3 were going to hit Sony harder than the PS2. Even if they had hit 4 million systems worldwide, with all of them sold to actual people, they'd have some loss. Word to Sony: Look at Nintendo and Sega; that third system's a pain in the butt ain't it?

From the report:
"Sony CEO Howard Stringer has "failed to fend off Nintendo," the report continues, with the Wii outselling the PS3 two-to-one worldwide."

Gee, I wonder why? Could it be that the PS3 is too hard to find at retail price, with people selling it like a stock portfolio? Never mind that its price point is a death sentence among console systems........

Meanwhile, the Wii sells at a reasonable price level, has an unique controller that's well-reported (bad and good news counts here)........

Looks like Sony has finally been unseated as the reigning king.

People are turning this into a video game-centric argument. This should be a financial debate... and the bottom line is that for the short term, Sony's third-quarter earnings are down, and this will reflect negatively on their stock price. Sony will need to answer to shareholders for the market slip.

This is no different than any other company having a slow quarter. Lets not predict how they will do next year for the sake of proving how much you love the PS3. In a capitalist market, the product will speak for itself.
