Sony promotes Xbox 360 racer?

PSP video download site plugs Gran Turismo HD trailer with Project Gotham Racing image.

Here we see the image on Sony's site...

It's not uncommon for gamers who don't care for racing sims to look at the Gran Turismos and Project Gotham Racings of the world and wonder what the difference is.

Apparently it can be hard for the companies themselves to distinguish between the various franchises, judging from the art for today's featured download (pictured, right) on Sony's PlayStation Portable video download site.

The download, a new preview trailer for the downloadable PlayStation 3 offering Gran Turismo HD, features art from a game that isn't Gran Turismo HD. As Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb pointed out on his blog, it's actually a screenshot from the Xbox 360 game Project Gotham Racing 3 (pictured, below right).

And here it is on the PGR3 developer's Web site.

Sony released Gran Turismo HD as a free download on the PS3's online store last month. Project Gotham Racing 3 was released for the Xbox 360 in time for the system's November 2005 launch.

As of press time, the Project Gotham Racing shot had not been pulled from the Connect Web site, but a Sony Computer Entertainment America representative told GameSpot that the Connect team was being notified of the issue.

    This news remember me CNN that showed a video of killzone 2 when they said that halo3 popped, lol.

    It's hard to believe since you just have to type the right name on google video to have the videos you want... or dowload them in HD from places like gamespot, or even better, for free from official sites...

    anyway it's nothing important.

    I'm tired of this console war, to me the all good that's why I have the three consoles, the choice is yours. Though the only defference is that one has more games than the other. If you decide to buy either of this systems, it does not mean you have to hate the one you didn't choose to buy. Forget about who's the best and PLAY!!!!!!

    I have an Xbox 360 and i'll proof it. Just type in premixedgandhi and message me and i'll message you back ,so i now have room to talk about the PS3 bghattas. Anyways yeah i feel this a very hilarious messup, things don't just happen were you "accidently" use a 2 year old game screenshot in place of a not even close to releasing game. If I where you PS3 fanboys I'd be pissed. It would be different if Sony said, "hey this what we are planning our game to look like,and we are using PGR3 as an example" but they didn't and they should be suuuuuueeeeeddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sony would have to google to find an image of their own product? .... rofl... Yeah, if you really think about it, there is no logical reason why Sony would have done this - mistake or not. You dont mistakenly edit and post a picture of a competitors product on your own products website, when you easily have access to the promo materials for your own company...

    As for Gamespot displaying this, understand it was on many major news sites, including Comcasts start page. Once again, Sony fans feel attacked because Sony messed up, and the news places report it.

    erm, who cares? they made a mistake, maybe they looked for gt in google and that's what came up, but to be honest i don't think this has any real gravitas concerning the supposed 'console war', we all know sony's marketing has been a bit odd of late (the black/white psp fiasco, anyone?) but it doesn't change my opinion, if you think about it it's most likely the fault of some poor sod in marketing dept. and why is it that every messageboard on this site ends up being a 360/ps3 slagging match? neither console is better, it just depends on what games you like, and how much money you've got. i'm still stuck with a ps2, but i doubt that the moment i get a ps3 or 360 i'll suddenly start slagging off the other, it resolves nothing. you're not going to change other people's opinions and preferences with 'witty' remarks and insults. get over it...

    Wait a second. So do you suggest that Gamespot stop reporting any negative news about Sony? Is it also an international conspiracy that just about every single media outlet reported on Sony's exploding laptop batteries? If that's the case, Sony is DOOMED!!!!!

    Millimeterpeter- yep you sussed it out there is an international conspiracy controlled by Cnet to make Sony look like idiots, they forced the Sony executives to state that there will be 4 million PS3's shipped by January 31st 2007, they used their mind powers to force Howard to say the PS3 release was in April in Europe. They snuck a M$ spy into the marketing dept. at the Sony website to put up a picture of PGR3 in the GT banner. They arraigned for any decent PS3 game releases to be pushed back months from the original release dates. They got Sony drunk one night and convinced them it was a good idea to put Blu-Ray in the PS3 and make it out of financial reach of most gamers. They whispered in the ears of all the major game producers that they should renounce exclusivity of their games and release them on the 360. Shame on Gamespot for using their powers for evil, after all none of this could ever be Sony's fault.

    MillimeterPeter - Rest assured, if MS plastered a Warhawk image to plug one of their games, we'd all be laughing at this. Seriously, no one thinks Sony is doing this intentionally. This is just one of those fun little moments where we show just how disconnected from their products a corporate megalith can be.

    It's "news" like this that XSpot, I mean, Gamespot will continue to report to tarnish the PS3's image. GS has shown it's true colors (green) for sometime now. Obviously it was a mess-up or there was a fanboy working at sony who did it, but the bottom line is, this article tries to make it sound like Sony couldn't tell the difference between PGR3 and GT5 (which is definitely not the case). Way to go GS!

    That picture had been on the site for an extremely long time. Why did it take everyone so long to realize it? Anyway, this is just a simple mistake made by a graphic designer somewhere within Sony (who probably has been fired by now). Is it really that big of a deal?

    Ha you have to laugh looking at the release list for the ps3 the need to borrow is inevitable with the exception of a couple of games you wil see the 360 has the same,i see nothing on the ps3 that looks worthy of an investment even for the hardcore sony fans.

    Why this happened is anyone's guess but my guess is that it was intentional and probably by some disgruntled employee that probably laughed for a week -- or however long the image sat there -- before someone noticed.

    As for comparisons that PGR looks better than GT, well, PGR was built from the ground up for the 360 while GTHD is nothing more than GT4 with some extra icing. I would like to think that by the time GT5 is ready it will be a better looking and better playing game than GTHD is at its current state.

    With that said, right now this puts yet another feather in the caps of Xbox fanboys as Sony can't seem to get anything right. Meanwhile I haven't heard any stories of misfortune for Bill Gates' team since, well, the launch of the 360. They're launch was just about as bad as Sony's but not nearly as publicized or deadly. Since then they've done nothing but good with 3 million Gears of Wars sold, regular updates on XBL, movie and TV service, the list goes on and on. No I don't own a 350, I own a PS3 and wouldn't trade it for a 360 or a Wii but even I have to admit that Sony is sh***ing the bed right now on just about everything except for the PS2. The only system that's still selling well but obviously not the mecca of games anymore. The PS2 era is over. I'm not sure Sony is aware of this just yet and unless they start getting some positive press soon people will slowly start giving up regardless of what Sony turns out over the next 6 months.

    Last thing and I'll shut up, Sony can't afford to take the summer off like most of the industry does. They need to be releasing 2 or more key titles every month for the rest of the year in order to build themselves back up for the Christmas season, which will be the true test of whether or not people are truly interested in the system. If Christmas 2007 is a bust it's basically over. You Xbox fanboys may have a new convert.

    They're not promoting MS you jack@$$e$. All that happened was whoever was working on advertising is an idiot and used the wrong screenshot. If it said, "Hey this is a shot from the amazing PGR3 and you should get a 360." then yes I'd say they're promoting Xbox...But they're not. It's a simple error on behalf of someone who may not even work for Sony directly but a design firm.
