Samurai Warriors spin-off headed for US Wii

[UPDATE] Koei confirms Samurai Warriors spin-off Sengoku Musou Wave will be headed to US, final name not official.

Swordfighting with the Wii Remote holds a natural appeal, if the sales of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel on the system are any indication. Now US gamers done with those hits and yearning for additional slicing and dicing have more to look forward to than Cooking Mama. A Koei representative today confirmed for GameSpot that the latest installment in the company's Samurai Warriors line of games will be released in the US.

Introduced at Nintendo's 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo kickoff conference as Sengoku Action and later dubbed Sengoku Musou Wave, the game will have a more Western moniker when it debuts in the US as Samurai Slash. Few details are known, but the game is played from a first-person perspective and lets players use the Wii Remote to take out rushing opponents with projectile and melee attacks.

The game is scheduled for release later this year.

[UPDATE] After the publication of this story, a Koei representative contacted GameSpot to confirm that the game is coming to North America, but stressed that the "Samurai Slash" name has not been made official.

This series has always been about boring button-mashing... I guess on the Wii it'll be a "wave-it-like-you-just-don't-care" game

I'll wait to see if it gets good reviews before trying it. I keep on reading about a Star Wars game for the Wii. Using Lightsabers? Damn that would be cool. I can just imagine me waving the "Wiimote" around stylishly, hearing the electronic wave "whooshing" sound the lightsabers make as they are being wielded, all in the privacy of my locked room.

Samurai Slash? I wish I could give it the most original game title ever award, but its tied between it and Gun right now in the shear linguistic creativity department.

The sword fight from red steel was'nt all that bad, I mean it really depends on how much you get into the game. This game should be even better so i'm expecting something rather good

I guess this means people have learned from Red Steel and will release something better, or at least I hope so...

Don't get me wrong, this sounds great and I am probably gonna get it

The awesomethign about this is that Koei prides itself on maintaining some level fo historical accuracy. OK OK one guy doing a super hurricane magic slash on hundreds of on screen chinese invaders isn't realistic. Granted. But as Koei's first First Person game, and a sword fighting focused game, I'm hoping they take that extra step and put some really tight motion sense logic into the swordplay

Sounds interesting - I really hope they pull it off and open up the sword-fighting genre on the Wii a bit more.

As long as the swordfighting aspect is better and more fun than Zelda's was im all in. This one looks really good to be fair though, Zelda's swordfighting was just.... Well, not 'bad' as such, just... normal, which isn't what you want for something with as much potential as the wii remote.

I'm going to see what the results of the development create before I give my two cents. The idea behind it catches my interest, but will the final result really become appealing. Just as 'cesare' states "Sceptical but hopeful".

Heh, sounds like a great idea! Although I love the Sengoku Musou Wave name more than Samurai Slash, but names aren`t important in the end.

doesn't look to great; I would have prefered if it played more like Die by the sword or something ^__^

The sword fighting better be better than Red steel's! I don't want to see any of that one blade for blocking and one for attack bollocks.
It needs to be waaaay more realistic than RS was. That game was such a huge let down.

As much as I love Fuedal Japan, this game looks like crap. Can you say Samurai Warriors with constant swinging/no skill with added bonus of PS1 graphics?

The Koei series needs all the innovation it can get. Funny how Japanese players always yearn for innovation unless it has anything to do with Dragon Quest, Pokemon, or the Dynasty series.

As long as Nintendo continues to encourage any developer willing to try something old in a new way, this could lead to great things. Sports, combat, adventure, puzzle solvers, heck even pitfall remade on the Wii can be gold... they just have to keep pushing this new gizmo rather than putting tons of faith on Nintendo classics remade on the Wii.

.....All you Bleach/Anime fan_boi's need to wake up and get a GF. Hell, your local hooker might have a january sale... Just get laid.

Anyway, anything with swords on the Wii is going to get my attention. Especially if it's Samurai sword action. Is it going to be first person though? I think third person would be easier to control... Like Zelda's easier then Red Steel. A game similiar to Dynasty Warrior's with the wii remote would be awesome.
