Xbox 360 sales surge in AU

Xbox 360 sells AU$5.8 million ($4.5 million) worth of hardware and software in Australia last week despite Wii launch.

Nintendo's Wii may have taken all the attention last week as it launched down under, but the Xbox 360 still managed to rack up record sales, according to industry data trackers GfK Australia.

GfK figures for the week ending December 13 show that AU$5.8 million ($4.5 million) worth of 360 hardware and software were sold. AU$2.6 million of that figure was spent on consoles--the highest-grossing week of 360 hardware sales since the unit was launched in Australia.

The Xbox 360 has now tallied sales of more than AU$145 million ($114 million) since launching in Australia on March 23 this year. "We're pleased to report that despite new competition in the market, sales are showing no signs of slowing down," Xbox Australia and New Zealand regional director David McLean said in a statement.

The Xbox 360 has now sold more than 100,000 consoles and 400,000 games in Australia.

"i wonder y that week, they must have had some good buddles or something, y not the week b4 no one would normally wait for the wii to come out to go buy a 360."

It's because in every store that had the Wiis except for one EBgames shop in a popular shopping mega-store, there were ABSOLUTELY NO LINEUP of people itching to get their hands on it like ya Japs, Yankees & Britons, who have never learnt patience, or really no idea how to have fun in other ways (parachute-flying from a sailing boat near the beach, bungee-jumping, jumping in beds with da gals, play sports outdoors; chess against a little, cute, but scarily good Asian girl; read a book (duh!), play the games you've already got or search for those that you'd never played b4 (duh again!), learn a new hobby, and even maybe become da next Einstein & solve the ultimate physics mysteries!

"Poor decision in making hardware? How so? The Xbox360 contains a superior graphics card and RAM to PS3. The controller is better, the console looks a whole hell of a lot better, and the interface looks alot better too. Game Library?"

Oh, and you shall be extremely happy about another huge advantage that the Xbox 360 has over the PS3 - it in fact can handle AI much better than the PS3, as it's got 3 primary cores to handle it while the PS3 only has one primary core to do so (the secondary cores lacks the necessary functions like branch loops, etc, that are needed for AI).

The 360 is great! All the Haters either don't have one or aren't into gaming.. XBL alone is worth having the system. Constant competition through leader boards.. Easy global gaming... I have a network of some hardcore gaming mofo's!!! If it wasn't for xbox Live I'd probably be stuck with all the friends I make on the GS news section and 1up.com... not that you guys are bad people or anything.... It's just that half of you are crazy "I like to hate on everything" fanboys.

I'm sure the reason for the surge in sales is due to the release of Gears of War. That game is definitely a killer app for the Xbox 360.

tidusjeff - Unfortunately, yes, I do think you a fool and let me explain why, post by post.

"Aussies are the coolest people to talk to? Depends, I haven't had great experiences talking to some. The Aussies I talked to were agrrogant. "

Firstly, I know you are not implying that all Aussies are "agrrogant", but one could make a very simple cross arguement that some individuals of any given origin are going to be arrogant. Some white people and black people, even asians are arrogant at times. Why you felt the need to post that worthless post is beyond me. Further contributing to your potential 'foolishness'.

Okay I like this next one...

''Once playstation launches in austrailia 360 is as good as done there.''

your response: "Only if Australians buy into the playstation and SCEI offer as much content as other orgins are going to recieve. But by seeing how stupid they are just like people in canada, america and europe the chances are pretty slim. "

Okay, firstly here you are agreeing with the previous post which is just hilarious in its own right. Second, you are saying as long as they offer as much content as other regions are receiving. This is obvious and should go without saying that more game support = more sales. Duh. But the part where I start to get confused, is where you think that as long as they offer same games in all regions, PS3 will succeed. If you haven't noticed there aren't alot of great games even in Japan or America that are going to PS3 exclusive, so how would this help PS3 dominate AU when it can't even dominate in the main markets?? Lastly, your condescending comments towards AU people make you seem even more arrogant then any Aussie I have ever spoken with.

I could go on and on through all your posts but I'll just skip over to this retarded comment to finish things up.
"I judge it for poor dession making in hardware and by the current retail game library. "
Poor decision in making hardware? How so? The Xbox360 contains a superior graphics card and RAM to PS3. The controller is better, the console looks a whole hell of a lot better, and the interface looks alot better too. Game Library? Okay, do I really have to go further to prove this guy an idiot? I think that pretty much says it all, mate.

undox, I don't quite see the logic behind your statement, "a proper two-console war"? Why is that even necessary? There are certainly enough gamers in the world to easily support all 3 consoles. It leads to a better variety of games available to us all.

  • undox

Despite this boost, Microsuck, uh, I mean Microsoft, is still failing outside of the US. If the US were to follow, then we can bring it back to a proper two-console war

I would figure Sony would be selling more consoles if the would actually provide them to begin with. As real as the PS3 is, it so reminds me of the term "Vaporware" for the moment. I have a Ps3 but I am having a difficult time defending it from its overtly obvious flaws. If any more of the supposedly "exclusive" titles jump ship, then what use do I have for the system other than watching movies. Do consumers really know what they are getting themselves into?

haha, our country, geographically, is pretty massive (maybe like 2/3rds the size of North America), it's too bad that the popultion density is like 80% of the population on 10% of the land mass. WE could fit waayyyy more people in if we didn't have a massive desert in the middle, lol. We pretty much have an entire reigon to ourselves, and New Zealand doesn't count lol, more sheep there than people (it's a fact)

Only 21.2 million people, and yet we are STILL running out of water.

Here's an interesting fact, the birth rate in Aus is 1.3 kids per couple, the only thing which is keeping our population rising is immigration so in another 50 years or so probably only half of the population will be white/caucasian compared to like 95% today. Here's a hint, expect a lot of Chinese, Indians and Latinos on Australian servers, lol -----just in case you wanted to know where we are headed

Anyway, 100'000 Xbox360's is pretty impressive, that'd be around 1 console to every 200 people, and when you take the average family of four into account, that's like 1 360 in every 50 households.

Oh, and yeh, PS3 launches in Aus & 360 is good as done??? haha, that's funny, let's see, at the oment, Xbox360 Premium = $597AUD, Paystation3 at launch = $1200 AUD. ALL PS3 games will cost $130Aud at launch ($96 US), while you can get 360 games pretty low now (PGR3 is down to $50AUD). And that's just on price, remember, the general taste of games in Aus is action games, games like Ghost Recon, HALO, FEAR, Gears of WaR.etc are the ones which sell, and (of course) the 360 has. Japanese RPG's arent very popular, they are mostly the games which guys rent for the night at a party with friends and after playing for half an hour laughing about how weird it is.

Is that a good answer for you Sony fanboys?
