Classic Railroad Tycoon now gratis

Sid Meier's original PC train simulation now available for free; 15MB download now at game's official site.

It's "all aboard" for PC gamers with a hankering for retro games. 2K Games has announced that Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is now available for free download. The 1990 classic clocks in at 15MB and can be downloaded from the official Sid Meier's Railroads! Web site. Included in the file is the full game, the manual, and reference cards. The latest incarnation of the Railroad Tycoon series, Sid Meier's Railroads!, was released this past October.

Still one of the greatest games ever but why did they release it with two of the old bugs still there. If you play on today's PC's, the game speed is either real slow of hyper-fast. Also, a patch to the original made it so you could zoom in or out using the wheel on your mouse but not in this release. I've played this game for hundreds if not thousands of hours and it would still be at the top of my play list if they would just make it more playable.

The funny thing is that this game's already been abandonware for a long time to download for gratis at www.abandonia.com, which is IMHO one of the best abandonware PC-DOS game sites ever (Home of the Underdogs collects PC-DOS, PC, and some other games, so it's a bit different but the greatest one ever, I'm sure).

Abandonia.com DOES have both the original and deluxe versions of Railroad Tycoon! They've also got Transport Tycoon made by the man who later designed the Rollercoaster Tycoon games.

blaster710, it's obvious you never played Railroad Tycoon. Those many of us who played it for months and months, learning how to manipulate the stock market with mastery, micromanage dozens of stations and trains, and outcompete the robber barons through unethical trade practices never got quite the same great experience from any other Railroad Tycoon sequel or any other game since. Of course the graphics are bad now...Railroad Tycoon was released the same the NES received Barker Bill's Trick Shooting and A Boy and His Blob.

Thanks for nothing, maybe the worst graphics in a game I have seen since post 1970s. The whole game is 12mb, don't even waste your time. Try running into a wall for five minutes, that will result in more fun.

To all those that think old games are free just because they're old (/sarcasm "No really, it's called abandonware" /sarcasm off), this is what's really required for it to become *really* free. Good for Sid.

Classy move by 2k and Sid Meier. Nobody, and I do mean NOBODY puts out games anywhere near the depth, scope, and quality of Sid Meier. His games are entertaining, educational, and it's painfully obvious that Robb12123 has never played any of them.

This was the first PC game that I was truly addicted to when I switched from the Atari to the PC back in 1991. I played many hours of it on my old 386 and 486 computers. Great to see it re-released like this. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Grasshopper locomotive waiting!

EDIT: This actually appears to be the Deluxe version, not the original. Still good though.
