CEA KO's game summit plans

Owners of massive CES show say game show plans shelved--for now.

While many industry insiders were expecting news to the contrary, the Consumer Electronics Association, owners of the giant International Consumer Electronics Show, said today that the group will not launch a game-focused event to fill the void created by the downsized and now summer-slated Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The group said its decision was based on "industry feedback and a recent ESA announcement."

The statement continued: "Although CEA was prepared to launch a new event, the recent announcement by ESA that it would open its event to both ESA and non-ESA members and would include PC and wireless gaming, led us to conclude that a new spring West Coast event would likely not serve the best needs of the industry."

While an event this spring now seems unlikely, the statement did not rule out a game-focused show at another time of the year--nor did it rule out a collaboration between it and the ESA in the future. "At this point, we will continue dialogue with the industry to determine if the need for a broader gaming event exists for 2008."

why is everyone so upset?......wouldnt you rather have them working on the games than wasting time getting ready for some show that relatively few people even get to go to?

unless you go to E3 every year you should be happy that its gone, what a waste of good dev time.

I think that the video game media are making way too much of the downsizing of E3. Actually I would be freaking out too if an annual event I attend that gives me FREE food, FREE drinks, and in some cases, probably even FREE women got shrunk down and I wouldn't be able to attend anymore!!! The event will still be held, but with less fanfare and frills... and yes, less freebies for the press! Get over it guys!

There won't be another E3, and no one will fill the void (at least for the time being), simply because the companies don't want to spend the money on the show. I don't really think it was the ESA's decision. It was EA, Sony, and Microsoft who said "We're not coming anymore." that killed the show. No matter who wants to put on the "Next E3", if you don't get publisher participation then you don't have much.

If the video game industry is taking off in leaps and bounds then why are they scaling back on the expos???

I agree with you, Will03 Move it out here to the Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York Tri-State area and see how much the attendance goes up. I'd rather spend $50 in gas getting there than $300 on a plane ticket to Cali or Vegas before I even pay the price of admission or pay for a hotel. Bring it out here to the heartland.

Oh now come on with this crap. I wish I had the money and connections to create my OWN gaming expo.

It would NOT be on the West Coast [Philadelphia, my hometown would be the site] AND it would be in mid-summer....Julyish. This is getting pretty lame. LAME.

i would prefer developers spent their time on making games instead of getting ready for some trade show.E3 was cool, but it was a waste of time for devs also.

i remember watching the video's about getting the GoW demo ready for E3 and thinking that time/effort/money would be better spent working on the actual game.

This is as stupid as "new E3". I say boycott and no one goes. You see boycotts never really work because then some losers say, "Hey nobody is going we should go and be all by ourselves." Eventually mobs of losers show up and there is more than expected.

If they didn't want to party down back at E3, they're not gonna party now.

We need a gaming event so we can look forward to the games being presented to us, they should make it happen.

there are too many show elsewhere. We need one in Australia but i don;t think that that is going to happen something...

With the "new" E3 now in July, that leaves a bigger gap in between the last and first game shows...
