UMK3 set to pummel XBLA

Long-awaited arrival of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for Microsoft's Xbox 360 downloadable game service set for November.

A decade and change ago there were two fighting franchises duking it out for supremacy at the arcades: Midway's Mortal Kombat and Capcom's Street Fighter. Earlier this year, it was revealed that installments from both series would be released for the Xbox 360 on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service.

In August, Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting was released after fans were made to endure multiple delays. Meanwhile, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 has yet to be delayed, possibly because it has never had a release date any more exact than "by the end of the year." With 2006 heading into the home stretch, Midway has finally narrowed that window down a bit.

Midway today announced that Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 would be available in November, completing a four-hit combo that also consists of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox editions of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (being released this week and next, respectively) and the series' PSP debut, Mortal Kombat: Unchained. Midway has not announced a price for the game yet.

UMK3 is the best overall MK game ever made, MKII doesn't even qualify as a fighting game in comparison. I hope people give it the chance it deserves. I discussed the release tonight on www.alphaism.com - check it out.

Can't wait for this to come out. I was really let down with UMK3 with the premium edition of Mortal Kombat Armageddon. My hope is this is taking so long because they are working on making it a truly solid game. They can bork MKA all they want, it doesn't hurt the gameplay. That'd be like beating a dead man. But if they mess up UMK3, the game will crumble. It's too precise.

MK2 sucks compared to UMK3. UMK3 is MK3 with almost all of the problems addressed and fixed. MK2 is primitive in comparison.

I almost I had a 360 now, almost. I have been a fan since I was like 4 and this is great news for MK everywhere. UMK3 was my second fav of the 2D's. Of course my favorite is MKII, however I would pick UMK3 for XBLA but MKII is better overall. Go MK, no Street Fighter.

Wow. This may be my one and only reason to go out and get a XBox 360. To me, this was by far the best Mortal Kombat game. In fact, I still play it on Super Nintendo, so to be playing that game even today you know that it must be a blast to play. My best memory from that game though is Y,B,X,A,Y,B,A,X,Y,A,A,A, Stryker's brutality.

I probably played MK2 more than any other game in the series. MK2 was definitely the more popular game but UMK3 was nice to look at because the combos looked sweet. I think this is the one with Brutality. I know there are going to be a lot of cheesers with Noob Saibot. I'm gonna have to google the moves and finishings since I forgot most of them.

I have always been a fan of this series. So I will be picking this up as well as the Mad Catz Live Arcade stick. So here is to hoping that the Mad Catz Arcade stick is tight in its controls and is well made. It is also retailing for 59.99 when it release I believe so it damn well better be good. Come to us UMK3.

Also on another MK note. I had read that Midway was working close with Microsoft to make MK:Armageddon backwards compatible on the 360. Anyone heard anything more about this?

lets hope this plays better than SF2 on XBLA"

    What are you talking about?

  • WESLY_SNYPES

    Posted Oct 10, 2006 6:06 am PT

Mortal Kombat 2 was good but I don't think it would attract too many people like UMK3 could in that there was no combo system untill MK3. It does not make UMK3 better but most of those matches would look boring now that combos have proliferated every fighting game. Killer Instinct would be good but the problem with that would be that RARE DOES NOT LISTEN TO ITS FANS. People have been talking about a new Killer Instinct for what 8 years already? I just want Samurai Shodown, Final Fight, and Street Fighter Third Strike...
