X06: $199 360 HD-DVD drive coming in mid-November

Microsoft prices, dates its add-on for North America, UK, France, and Germany.

The next-generation disc format wars between the Sony-backed Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD format will officially see a joint front when the console wars open this holiday season. Microsoft has announced that the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 will arrive in North America, UK, France, and Germany in mid-November, right around Sony's planned US launch of the Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3.

When it hits stores in North America, the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player should retail for $199.99. Gamers in the UK can expect the player to run them £129.99 ($245), while those in France and Germany can expect to pay 199.99 euros ($254) for the hardware. All these prices have been called "estimated retail prices" by Microsoft, which noted that the actual retail price may vary.

A movie-playing machine with no movies to play wouldn't make much sense, so Microsoft is also throwing in a copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong on HD-DVD, and an Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote, as well. That's the film version of the giant ape's adventure and not the Ubisoft game adaptation--Microsoft has previously said the HD-DVD will be used only for movies.

At last week's Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft announced its plans for the Japanese release of the HD-DVD add-on. It will be launched there on November 22 and will retail for 20,790 yen ($177), including tax.

    Bought the 360 HD DVD drive. Popped King Kong in the picture is unbelievable. FANTASTIC PICTURE IN 1080i & and the new TRUE DOLBY sound blows the walls of the house. I highly recommend it if you love movies and have a 1080i or 1080p tv. Never imagined it would have such a sharp clear picture.

    IF YOU LIKE MOVIES AND HAVE A GOOD ENOUGH HDTV. I WOULD DEFINITELY SAY GO WITH ONE OF THEM THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. ESPECIALLY IN SURROUND SOUND. MOVIE'S LIKE U-571, WE WERE SOLDIERS, LEATHAL WEAPON 1&2, AEON FLUX, T-3 IS THE BEST ONE I'VE SEEN.

    NOW ABOUT THE X360 VERSION OF THE HD DVD IT'S NOT GOING TO COME WITH AN HDMI CABLE SO WHAT IS THE SENSE OF THAT. HDMI HAS A MUCH BETTER RESOLUTION THAT THE COMPONENT. I KNOW BECAUSE I HAD TO FIGURE OUT TO SWITCH FROM THE COMPONENT CABLE TO THE HDMI RIGHT ON THE PLAYER. SO IF YOU CANT GET THE HDMI I WOULD SAY DONT BOTHER.     ONE OF THE BEST MOVIE'S I'VE SEEN SO FAR IS WE WERE SOLDIERS THAT MOVIE IN HD IS AMAZING. I KINDA LIKE THAT SONY IS PUTTIN THE BLU RAY IN THERE PS3. YOU WILL BE SAVING AT LEAST 400-500 DEPENDING ON THE PLAYER YOU GET. I'M SORRY BUT I'M NOT SPENDING 1000 ON A DVD PLAYER JUST YET IT'S JUST TOO EXPENSIVE.

    I don't like it, it's not too expensive considering the current technology... a standard hd-dvd player is 499 at best, and a blu-ray, well, i don't feel like selling my car for one of those... however it's too keep them in the race, but seriously, if your a big gamer, why would you waste the life of your system playing Dvd's, My old x-box died and i barely used it... sorry, it's a gaming device

    To Agent-FTO: If you're seeing flickering during your XBOX 360 gaming sessions, I would suggest you look at the television as the culprit. I don't see any signs of that when I'm watching in-store demos.

    I never said it had worse graphics than a SNES or Genesis. But for $700 it seemed underpowered and overpriced.

    (and the 1 year statement was something said by you originally, hence why I quoted it).

    I have nothing against the 3DO personally, but had it been released at a more reasonable price point with a better library, I feel it would fared much better than it did.

    pretty much the difference of 3d and 2d graphics. And ps1 came out about two years after the 3do.

The other titles that have been reviewed that I've read about look like junk compared to HD-DVD. Even if the other studios have decided to ignore Sony on this issue (a good business strategy since Sony's never been known for making intelligent decisions about what to include in a new technology...see Betamax) the Sony movies are still going to look like junk because of their insistance that the other codec is better.

    I think people are missing the point, $199 fir a HD DVD player, is a good price, if you already have an XBox 360.

    XBox 360 owners now don't have to buy a PS3 for next generation DVD playback.

    Thats what I thinks.

    You want a next gen console you now have a choice of Xbox or PS3 if the next gen DVD factor is the most important selling point to you.

    + people might be more able to afford the prices if bought in bits. $299 1 month $199 the next.

    I'm not a M$ fanboy, dont want to own either of the consoles, Wii for me!!

Have they forgotten that its an add on. Im sure PS3 will come with a load of add ons that will be more expensive and vice versa. But add ons have nothing to do with the actual cost of the consoles. Im gald there is an HD-DVD add on, but im not gonna buy it anytime soon. See its called giving the consumer and option Sony take notes.

    $535?? $400 (360 premium) + $60 (GTA4) + $50 (XBOX LIVE) = $510. Not sure how you reached $535. It isn't much of a difference but let's try to be accurate here shall we? For comparisons sake. (sure there's no tax included but you failed to include it on the PS3 as well)

    The PS3 is good tech for the money, I will always agree with that (although I do get tired of saying it all the time...lol)...So value wise sure it's a good deal. Although I'm not sure how many people want to spend almost $600 in one sitting though (or more for the premium PS3). Remember, many people have the 360 already, so buying the add-on (it IS optional, remember?) is only a $200 dollar investment. One that you don't have to make. Ever. If you buy new tires and wheels for your car, does that mean your car's purchase price automatically goes up? No. You didn't have to buy those. It simply ADDS to your car, but it would function the same without them.

    The same thing applies here. A simple yet effective analogy I think. :-)

    Again with the pricing. Nice of you to try and word it like you were being "fair"...

    The PS3 is good tech for the money, I have never argued that. Well all the "features" you speak of (still not sure how you even included XBX LIVE into the purchase price. That says Fanboy like nothing else..), are things not everyone may need, so hence the word "optional".

    Do I wish Wi-fI was included in the 360? Sure I do (though I don't need it, so it's more of a "ohh cooL' feature). Do I wish it had a bigger HD? Ocassionally yes. Am I upset that an HD-DVD player add-on is $200? Not at all.

    Why should I be? It has NO bearing on the gameplay aspect of the 360 (some thing every sony fanboy fails to realize). I am not being forced to buy it, and if I choose to I can buy it when my budget permits, or not at all if HD-DVD fails as a format.

    The price advantage is different if it's a later purchase. Most people have no problem spending money over time, it's the large LUMP single purchases that tend to bother people. Of course if you buy them both at once then your point is somewhat correct. Otherwise it's a point that could be argued back and forth indefinitely...

    Who said Blu-Ray/HD-DVD aren't necessary? Buying a 360 says no such thing. Most people buy it for the games. That has nothing to do with the media format the game is on (that's how it should be looked at, unless you're a Sony fanboy of course, then media is more important than anything)..

    How is HD-DVD inferior to Blu-Ray? The initial HD-DVDs ALL looked better than the Blu-Ray Discs. Now that Sony has ok'ed the use of a different compression codec, the quality is the same on both. Sure Blu-Ray has the potential to hold more, but when will it used up? Will it cost you an extra $5-$10 a disc? When does the spiraling price gouging stop? There will reach a point where consumers won't buy movies regardless of media. There has to be a price limit.

    You make it sound like Blu-Ray = better EVERYTHING. And that's simply not the case. It's simply MORE STORAGE, that cost MORE MONEY to fill up. There is no "magical equation" stating otherwise...

    HD-DVD players are $500, 1/2 the price of Blu-Ray players (not counting the PS3. We have yet to see if the quality is up to par with stand alone players...an "optoinal" attachment (gee, if I don't want it I don't have to buy it) that does the same is $200...

    Tool? That's a mighty arrogant claim my friend. Just how full of yourself are you? How does buying an optional attachment make anyone a tool? It isn't like it's useless or anything (like many attachments we have seen over the years)...if you don't want it, don't need it or don't care about the format war, don't buy it....

    Yeah that's major tool material right there buddy...

    As far as less graphical power that could be argued by every dev out there. That's a rather bold claim to make. Even if it is more powerful the general concensus is that the difference would be minimal..

    HD space is a given. The 20GB drive on the 360 should have been bigger. It works but I would like more...1 point for you then?

    Processing power? Yes it will do more teraflops, that 's doesn't mean it's prime a material for a console processor. Of course, give anything enough horsepower and you can make it force it's way through any problem..

    ..not exactly an elegant solution now is it?

    And it would be different if MS stated HD-DVD was intended for games, but they never did, so your point is moot I'm afraid...

    My knowledge of the 3DO is average at best, so if I was wrong there I'll accept that, but I remember no being blown away by the 3DO. I recall seeing Crash and Burn and just being severly underwowed by it. Not to mention the price was insane crazy.

    And by your own admittence, a system comes out only 1 year later, at half the price (or less than half if it was $700) and blows it away in every aspect. Graphically, controller wise, etc...

    ***And the 3do actually does have a ton of great games. Immercinary, battle sport, Alone in the dark, Star Control II......***

    I forgot about Star Controll II..I'll give you that one...

    As for the others..I like alone in the dark, but not every inception of it was up to par...

    again with "interstate78" Sony actually has announced their Online plans. Access to multiplayer and the Marketplace will be FREE. As far as blu-ray support it is out and exists infact Blu-ray is making 50% more money than HD-DVD, but this is something that will probably change (depending on how Sony is inclined to spin it eg is the ps3 a bluray player or not) when the PS3 comes out. Blu-ray is making more money because the $500 HD-DVD player on the market (obviously the most popular one) is being sold under cost, so they are losing money on each player sale hoping to make up for the loss with title buys (like a console for its inital years of release.) Where as the Blu-ray player is sold above cost and makes money out of the gate. And as far as working 50gb Blu-ray discs they're being produced now they are set to be released early November. And if anyone wants to talk about quality difference the most recent blu-ray titles are using the VC-1 codec and an h.264 title is coming out in november (something HD-DVD does not have). The formats are going to have the same visual and audio quality as they both support the exact same codecs. It all comes down to support and how the extra space of blu-ray is used. And if anyone wants to talk about the combo DVD + HD disc formats I will laugh in your face. You honestly expect Universal or Time Warner to want to SAVE you money? You mean I could call them up and go "hey I scratched my copy of The Matrix, can you guys send me a replacement" and not expect to hear them laugh in my face? Thats the bad thing about format wars, it does nothing to the large studios, if format X loses to format Y they liquidate their titles and then sell you new copies. Its the end consumers that get screwed.

    LOL!!! GT4 HD!!! I was about to say that too!!! Developers are not going tobe keen on developing games on hd-dvd too as they know not all 360 owners will buy one. So if there's no games no x-box 360 owners are gonna buy the drive. Lets see. how many paople are gonna shell out extra $200 for HD-DVD just to watch some movies. Alot of people I know are still watching movies through scart (not even RGB). So as I said people sometimes need a push to be moved, option just doesnt cut it. And no one likes add ons. IT UGLY!!!

    "interstate78" As it stands there are NO 1080p 360 titles and there are none planned on the horizons as said by microsoft. As for the PS3 not getting 1080p games thats **** and you obvioulsy didn't read the article correctly it even said that Gran Turismo HD is a 1080p game. And MGS4 is confirmed to be a 1080p game as is Resistance Fall of Man. A decent frame rate means nothing. A decent frame rate is either 30 or 60 fps. As it stands 720p games are going for 60fps and 1080p games are going for 30.

    "Rydeordielover" I have no idea what your logic behind having to use HDMI, its obvious you haven't kept up with recent news when Sony said that the ps3 isn't coming with an HDMI cable but a component cable (you have to buy the HDMI seperately). And HDMI isn't even Sony's format so its not THEM making yo adopt its the MPAA as its the new standards because of HDCP. Its either HDMI or VGA, HDMI is the better format than VGA you'll get a cleaner image from it as its digital and not analog.

    You know, I'll agree with you all that the price point is now no longer an issue, but for a casual gamer to upgrade, your looking at 325 VS 525, period. Basic System VS Basic System. There is a 200 dollar difference flat out, now if you want extra's on both sides its going to cost you, HD-DVD players, Wi-Fi... ITS ALL PAY TO PLAY! My point is that you have to look at the games, if Blu-Ray looses in the format war, who is going to produce games in a non-supported format? WHO"S STILL MAKING GAMES ON UMD, AND FOR HOW LONG!!!!!!! I have a PSP but soon they will be making games downloadable for Memory sticks??? Think about it! THEY WILL ALWAYS MAKE GAMES ON DVD! If you want HD Movies, youve gotta pay for it, if you want WiFi youve gotta pay for it. Pick the parts you want and pay for them, Jeeze, obviously Mircosoft is LETTING ME CHOOSE what i want, Sony's making me adopt and buy things i dont want, do i have an HDMI port on my TV, NO! AM I going to go cough up another 2K to play in 1080p NO, Ive got an HD projector that does 1080i and thats great and my 360 PLAYS 1080i OUT OF THE BOX at 399 (premium on launch day FYI)! What happens if you dont have an HDMI Port........... think about it. You still gonna be albe to play, and play at this wonderfull 1080p.... Check your TV's Kids!

    M$ talked mad smack about the PS3's price point (along with the rest of the world) and most people agreed. Now if you want a 360 with some high def support it will cost ...wait ....lemme think....399 + 199 = the exact same price as the PS3. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this? Not too mention the PS3 has 40 more gig's of disc space and HDMI output which the 360 doesn't have. I understand that M$ wants to give consumers the 'choice' but we should at least get the same benefits if we choose to spend the same money.

    PS3 is Blu-Ray, the blu-ray will allow all the fmv sequence tobe in 1080p with 8.1 surround sound if game developers desire. they can have higher resolutions textures without having to worrying about fitting it into a puny disc. All these things will help the storyline & gameplay. I bought my Xbox 360 & i'm not happy with the graphics as its going through analogue component output. I can see the flickering when I'm playing high speed games which isnt good. PS3 will hav everything that people expected from next-gen games machine & 360 has disapointed alot of people including me. 360 HD-DVD add-on will be like Mega CD on the Mega-drive. Add-ons aren't always a big success because alot of people can live without it. There are some things that hav tobe pushed onto customers & blue-ray is one of them & customers will apreciate it soon.

    People, BOTH BLUE RAY AND HD-DVD WILL STILL PLAY REGULAR DVDS regardless of who wins the format wars. Enough flame wars already, bottom line is that you will pay for it if you want it, why should it matter to you if someone else wants it or not.

    It's too early to tell which format will win the war at this point. And if they make games on HD-DVD and Blue-Ray, it will be supported for games whether the format succeeds in the home video wars or not.

    Just be happy with what you have, and let other people be happy with what they have. Geez.

    5- Blue-Rays are Single Layer while HD-DVDs are already Dual Layers. which mean 30go HD-DVDs are here now, and Blue-Rays are 25go for the moment. they have not yet produced any dual layer Blue Rays.

    TDK has created compatible and working Blu-ray discs with 33.3 gb per LAYER... that's umm... 3.3gb more than a dual layer HD-DVD.

    And they do sell Dual Layer Blu-rays, but for data only...so in a way, you're correct.

    One more thing, Wal-mart sells Blu-rays (i know i know.. . of all places lol)

    PJ's KING KONG was uhhmm... well, the first hour of the movie was slow and boring, but it more than made up for it in the later parts...

    I wont be getting this, as my X360 will be for games only, while I can watch Blu-ray movies on my PS3 and whatever else on DVD.

    so this info is meh...

    2k for a 1080i 50 inch I believe. 1080p is barely out. Two months ago I visited the Sony Store and they had none. Show me a link to somewhere where they have a 50" for 2000$ cuz that smells like bull and I don't believe that.

    You can get 27inch HDtvs for about 500$ (480p, 720p, 1080i) so if anyone can show me a link to a 1080p below 1k I'll believe ye
