While the "pirates of the high seas, looting/plundering" type are enjoying a pop-culture renaissance of sorts thanks to films like The Pirates of the Caribbean and novels like Gideon DeFoe's The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, pirates of the media-stealing variety are still very much unpopular with English authorities.

Last week, Suffolk police raided a house and arrested a man suspected of illegally copying games, music, movies, and pornography, according to the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publisher's Association (ELSPA). ELSPA antipiracy investigators were also involved in the raid, during which authorities confiscated 20 duplicating machine and 5,000 master discs from the house.

Earlier this year, the ELSPA won a court case against a game pirate, who was ordered to pay the organization an amount equal to everything he owned (more than £78,000, or about $146,000) within six months or spend two years in jail.
