Activision commits to Wii, PS3 launch lineups

[UPDATE] Publisher will support next-gen system releases with new Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, Marvel games; adds a pair of Activision Value titles to Wii slate.

While Nintendo and Sony may be holding their cards close to the vest when it comes to which games will arrive on store shelves alongside their new systems, Activision CEO Robert Kotick has detailed which games his company will have on shelves alongside the new systems.

In a presentation to the Merrill Lynch Media and Entertainment Conference yesterday, Kotick said that Activision would have three games for each of the new systems, calling it, "the largest launch lineup that we've had in the history of our company."

When the PlayStation 3 launches November 17 in the US, it will be supported by Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Tony Hawk's Project 8. Wii gamers will get a similar array of games, with Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, according to Kotick.

Kotick said that the largest launch lineup in Activision history would be followed by the largest lineup of games in a single year for the company, mentioning some unannounced--but hardly surprising--titles.

"When you look out at our fiscal '08 titles, this is the largest in the history of our company," Kotick said, "starting with our June quarter, with Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Transformers, later in the year new releases [of] Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Next, The Bee Movie, a Marvel title, a new Guitar Hero, and more to come."

While it's impossible to pin down exactly which Marvel property that title will be based on, it's almost certainly not going to be Iron Man. While the golden Avenger has a feature film scheduled to hit theaters in 2008, Activision confirmed in July that it had parted ways with the license.

As for Guitar Hero, Activision made no secret of its intent to extend the franchise when it purchased developer RedOctane for nearly $100 million. Last month saw reports that the publisher was working on not just one, but as many as four new games in the series.

[UPDATE] An Activision representative confirmed the company's launch plans for GameSpot, and added a couple more titles to its Wii lineup. When Nintendo's new system launches, the Activision Value brand will also have Rapala's Tournament Fishing and World Series of Poker on store shelves alongside the new hardware. The representative also noted that Tony Hawk Next is still a working title for the game.

2 reasons why ps3 is better.

    1. more and better games.
    2. More power and features.

Are you aware that the game is coming out for the 360 as well, and both consoles are pretty much the same in terms of performance? I very much doubt the PS3 COD3 will be different to the 360 one

As a follow up to spydermans comments on MUA ,go watch the gameplay videos i was interested in this title till i saw the the bad guys drop coins for crying out loud, COINS. Also can we go with out a marvel game having the two bit x-men villian Arcade in it? Arcades one of the lamest villians ever concieved yet because you can make an easy game level we see him in almost every title. Oh yea in some defence of rodd76doggs position we live in a global economy and when some people choose not to participate it hurts the entire world, even japan really as when their currency gets to valued and it makes the price of japanese electronics go up here, so maybe it all works out in the end anyway.

Ahhh....now THIS is what I'm talking about! More great games for the PS3 & Wii on launch day!!!! COD3...it'll be a great game either way...no matter which platform. I highly doubt a person is going to look at the detail of an f-ing rock between the PS3 & Wii just because of the graphical performance when they're getting there @$$ handed to them by a sniper. If they do...WAY too much time in their hands. I just get the feeling it'll be more "interactive" on the Wii because of that controller. We shall see. =) I'm gonna go SO broke!!! I can't wait!! WOO HOOOO!!!

Definitely great news from Activision. They are supporting all the next generations console and I hope that the strategy could prove right for them. I'm eager to see what they can do with the features of the Wii and the power of the PS3.

Why the heck would Marvel Ultimate Alliance make anyone purchase a system? It's pretty much a follow up to the Legends titles available on almost all current-gen platforms and have been for years and it's not even close to being an exclusive. If you want a PS3 for that type of game you probably shouldn't even be on a thread like this on a site like this. You buy a system for the exclusives, not the cross-platform titles. Save yourself $200 and get a 360 and a copy of the same game. You'll even have enough dough left over for a handful of more games.

Since nobody else is, I will take rodd76dog's side. While we can all agree that the video game market is a global one, we can also agree that Microsoft is certainly considered an American company and the xbox 360 is an American product. The fact that the xbox 360 is manufactured in China does not change the fact that Microsoft produces it. Just like that Toyota you are driving was manufactured in Kentucky, but it is decidely a Japanese car and product. Bashing rodd76dog is just that bashing him. So, when he says buy American he is being patriotic and should not destroyed for it. I don't agree with his position but I admire his patriotism.

A side by side comparison of the graphics of the PS3 and Wii versions at standard resolution will be a fantastic test as to whether gamers without HDTV should pick up a PS3 or Wii for the third-party games. You'll never see it at a retail store, because they'll only use Hi-Def TV. If there's little difference in graphics, and they both have online and the Wii games are cheaper... the choice is clear.

I never played guitar hero, but I have played a game much like it where you play bits of a track by pressing certain buttons. I guess this game was more popular than that one because of the guitar controller. I love Activision. I especially loved Spiderman 2. I probably spent most of my many, many hours playing that game just swinging around. Yes, I am easily entertained.
    Can't wait for Spiderman 3
