EA confirms retro Replay

Publisher mines catalog of '90s hits to bring budget-priced compilation to the PSP in November.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Aug 31, 2006 1:07 pm PT

Earlier this month, online retailer GameStop posted a descriptive product listing for a PlayStation Portable retro compilation called EA Replay. The write-up said 14 games would be included in the package, which would ship October 3 and carry a $29.99 price.

Today Electronic Arts confirmed the game's existence for GameSpot and corrected a couple of bits the retailer had gotten wrong. In a semiliteral case of "a day late and a dollar short," it turns out Replay will actually ship about a month later than anticipated, November 7 to be precise, and with a more pleasing price point of $19.99.

Under production at EA Canada, Replay will also include features not found in the original games. To better suit some of these titles to gaming on the go, EA is including the ability to save any of these games at any point. Three games, Budokan, Mutant League Football, and Road Rash II, will also feature local wireless head-to-head play, and players will be able to unlock and collect virtual trading cards featuring retro game art.

The 14 games included in the collection are listed below. The versions included in EA Replay will all be taken from the Super Nintendo or Genesis editions of the original titles.

B.O.B.
Budokan
Desert Strike
Jungle Strike
Haunting starring Polterguy
Mutant League Football
Road Rash
Road Rash II
Road Rash III
Syndicate
Ultima: The Black Gate
Virtual Pinball
Wing Commander
Wing Commander: Secret Missions

Playing SNES and Genesis games on my PSP? I've done that for such a long time with the homebrew emulators... I can play those games right now, I suppose. The list doesn't sound that great. EA should port some of its greatest games for PSOne, like both 3D road rash titles, NFS: high stakes or a compilation of the first two medal of honor titles. Or a compilation of Need for Speed, 1 trough 4 (32 bit era.) I would buy that.

Anyone who's excited about Ultima: The Black Gate in this collection, BE WARNED. If what they said is true, it's coming from the SNES version, which was an EXTREMELY GIMPED AND TERRIBLE version of Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

Seriously. Kiss companions, most (if not all, can't quite remember) side quests, adult themes/dialog, and pretty much anything quality goodbye. It doesn't just lack a sense of polish. It lacks everything that could make a game remotely average.

So in answer to a question below, how well will Ultima's controls translate to a console like this? Not well. Not well at all. It's seriously that bad.

Some of the others seem fun, though. Although in hindsight I'm not sure it's going to be so easy to forgive the slowness of the Road Rash games.

Am I the only who remembers that Road Rash played like junk? This list is underwhelming to say the least.

This would be "OK" to buy for the PSP. These games were" So-So" back then. For the low price it would be worth getting at some point for the 16-bit memories.

I have been dying for Mutant League Football to be brought back in some form!!! Now I can dust off my PSP! As for those who are being negative about this compilation, you truly aren't a gamer until you have played and enjoyed these classic games. Now if only they would next-gen Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey.

any REAL gamer would appreciate these classics in such a sweet little package. Hell, I even turn down my 360 to play some road rash and Haunting every now and then. oh yeah, and for the idiots who can't read, jailbreak was never on snes or genesis, that's why it's not in this compilation, since ya know, this is an snes and genesis game mix-up...this will be good.

Wow... Budokan and Ultima? Heh, I didn't expect anything to be in there for hardcore gamers(or anything aside from Madden/NFL junk)... I might pick this up, but the Sega Collection is higher on the priority list.

BTW, GBA/Genesis/SNES emulation on the PSP are all great and run near perfect, if you disagree, you probably haven't researched them enough to have a valid opinion of them and don't have the best emulators(latest ver).

"dude, emulators run like cr@p on the psp, the framerate is borderline unplayable, even with the gba emulator !!! they're overrated."

you must've been playing a bad emulator, SNES 9x for PSP ran just as good on my PSP as it does on a PC. You proably just forgot how bad the originals were, and try setting your processor to 333Mhz instead of 222, just keep it plugged in and you're fine.

also, GBA emulation is bad on a psp because it's a newer emulator. give it time, and it will be as flawless as the rest.

MLF, I haven't played that game since I had Sega Channel.... all I remember is being zapped by lightning and killing someone.

I'm just wondering how well the Wing Commander games and Ultima will translate to the handheld controls. Interesting package nontheless although I can confirm that Budokan blew chunks on the Genesis.
