Retail Radar: PS3 Oblivion, Stranglehold release date?

Online retailer's site fuels rumors that Bethesda's open-ended role-player could soon explore new platforms, suggests a delay on Midway's Woo-based shooter to 2007.

In April, as anticipation for the Electronic Entertainment Expo was building up to its annual crescendo, a rumor circulated that the hit Xbox 360 and PC role-playing game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was heading to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

The source of the rumors, a poster on the Gaming Age Forums, said the information came from a Bethesda Softworks release schedule that listed both the PS3 and PSP editions of Oblivion and gave a November 6 release date for them. Those rumors are about to get another burst of momentum, as GameStop has updated its retail site with a product page for a PS3 version of Oblivion. GameStop is taking preorders for the game with a very familiar expected shipping date of November 6. Sadly, the retailer's site is still devoid of any mention of Oblivion for the PSP.

In other release-date fun, GameStop has pushed back Stranglehold on its release schedule. At E3, Midway gave the game a "Winter 2006" release, but the online retailer now lists a shipping date of February 15, 2007, for the Xbox 360 version of the game. The same date also graces one of a pair of PS3 product pages for the game. The other PS3 listing gives a November 1 shipping date. Curiously enough, the retailer has no product page for the PC version.

If that delay is true, it seems nobody informed Midway about it. A representative of the publisher told GameSpot today that the company is still aiming for "a fall or holiday 2006" release for Stranglehold on all three platforms.

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence, nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

well, considering there still hasn't been another announcement since this article, i think it's rather certain that it's not going to be a launch title at least. if you consider the fact that the game was one of the biggest sellers for the xbox 360 and still the highest rated title out there for it, i would assume that sony would make a bit of noise about it at E3 the way microsoft announced GTA 4 same day launch. instead, it's only rumors. if anything, i'd imagine they'd wait until an expansion was released (if that rumor holds true) and release them together like microsoft did with far cry and the upcoming half-life set. but we'll see.

i wouldnt be surprised if oblivion came out for the ps3 or the psp just in case u guys forgot oblivion is also a cell phone game. however as far as the ps3 version having extra content... i doubt it
the entire point of releasing oblivion to the ps3 would be to make money they could make more and give sony's live servise a boost by releasing extra downloadable content much like the xbox 360
as far as graphics its harder to get much better than what the xbox and pc versions have already. but to see some of the pop-up isues fixed would be nice. other than that there is not much that can be improved on in this game.

Oblivion was made for Pc And xbox and that is the way it should stay.Play Station sucks just like sony.Microsoft is the best and always will.Microsoft makes better quality products and good looking too. That PS3 is really ugly and big unlike the 360 is a beauty more fun.PS3 made have better graphics, but 360 will be the best and the next Xbox.

I Really hope it comes out on PSP because i have a psp and 360 and Oblivion is GREAT for 360.

another reason is if anyone has played any of the untold legends for psp, you know that it really isnt a good game.
I just hope for a good RPG on psp. I really wouldnt care about graphics for it anyways.

For the record, you can buy Oblivion on your cell phone. A PSP translation is totally not impossible. It may not even be a first person game, again, like the cell phone version. It uses a fixed isometric view almost like old RTS games.

Other than that I see it as being plausible because i would certainly sell well for either system. PSP owners would surely enjoy a quality RPG and anyone who is waiting for a PS3 who has heard how good the game is would surely like to try it out I'm sure. On the other hand I think it's a little implausible that after E3 and mere months before the game's release that Bethesda has yet to acknowledge it's existence let alone it being a launch title (and even apparently a pre-launch title). Maybe if they said it is "in development" and gonna be released some time next year I'd prolly buy this rumor more.

As it stands right now I don't think it will be a launch title. But I don't doubt it is in development.

I don't see why people care whether or not it comes out on PS3 or not. If you already have it on 360 that's great, but what about the peole who don't have 360s, it would really suck for them if they can'y play an awesome game like Oblivion. So why do you want people not to play Oblivion on PS3, is it because you don't want bethesda to make more money so they can make even more awesome games, or is it because of your general hate of Sony and all who play on their systems. Regardless of your reason of not wanting it to come out on PS3 consider the following, does it really matter whether or not someone has a game that doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever, I don't think so.

    PC Rulez.

As for you who believe that Oblivion should be platform exclusive, or believe that there is no chance of it coming to PS3, I offer you this exerp from an interview done by IGN and bethesda.

IGN: The Xbox version of Morrowind did very well. What platforms are you aiming at for the new version? How will the console versions differ from each other and the PC version?

Todd Vaughn: It really did well on Xbox, we recently crossed the mythical "over a million copies sold" on the Xbox -- which is fantastic. Plus, both the original version and the Game of the Year edition made Platinum Hits status, so we couldn't be happier with how it was received on Xbox. We'll try to get the game on as many platforms that can handle it as possible. We simply view it as "Oblivion," and plan on having it be the same regardless of platform. That being said, I'm sure there will be visual differences between versions, but they'll be minor.

With all of this said I'm still hoping and praying for it's arrival on PS3, especially because I don't feel like wasting my money on Xbox 1.5...Opps I meant 360.

TES4: Oblivion probably won't be going to the PS3. The reason being is that the game use "Procedual Synthesis", a programming technique that is patented by Microsoft.

I see no reason why Oblivion wouldn't be ported to 360. I remember reading something about Bethesda saying (way before it came out) that they would like to get Oblivion on as many platforms as possible. And I don't see why they wouldn't, it would sell really well on PS3 and they would make a lot of money. It's not like they are exclusive to Microsoft or anything, the only reason Morrowind was on Xbox and Oblivion was on 360 is because they were the only two consoles at the time that could run the respective games. I would be delighted to see a PS3 version, even though I have it on 360. Ahh, PC version will still be by far the best anyways.

Hey if it come out on psp then it would have loading times but you got to remember that sony does want to put upgrades into the system something I hit up MS for alot but if they have some type of upgrade where there is a new processor of maybe its and add on to the PS3 which would make sense since they are using both sytems at once for many of the games for addons which I find genius but its been done. Unless MS does something extrodinary then there is no way that Sony will fall its the only hope to have a competitive sales in the market I hate monoloplies which is why I hate MS. We might see the fall of Nintendo in the near future. If this goes then many people will stop and say why did I buy the Xbox 360 and kick themselves. Including many of my friends I find this hillarious.

The fact that there was no announcement at E3, nor is there anything posted on Bethesda's site leads me to believe that there will NOT be a PS3/PSP Oblivion. That's a pretty big announcement, and missing out on the oppurtunity to capatalize on the publisity at an event like E3 seems like a mistake. Considering it's almost August and there's still no announcement seems proof enough that this won't happen.

"And anyways, it doesn't say ANYTHING on bethesda's website... they wouldn't stoop so low as to put an actual good game on the psp or ps3."

Just because your an X-box fanboy doesnt mean Bethesda is. They care about money. And if releasing Oblivion on PS3 = a considerable amount of sales, and they have no exclusivity deal with Microsoft, you can bet that theyll be making it for PS3. And theirs no reason why Bethesda should advise the general public about this move when theres still no solid dates on ANY PS3 games.

Ok... whatever. I've already played 100 hours of this. 360 is still going to own because their game library is going to be the best one ever. By the time November comes I wont even remember oblivion. You thought the graphics of the ps3 were going to be RIDICULOUS!!! but oblivion is going to look the same it did when it came out for the 360. Can you not see that the ps3 is a SUPER HYPE MACHINE!!! Sony is the most deceiptful company I know. Sony even said themselves that for $600 dollars, "You're paying for POTENTIAL!!!" Not necessarily a good console but potential. And the reports that said the ps3 will be sony's downfall and that they're going to come in 3rd place. And anyways, i wouldn't trust gamestop

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence, nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

I pre-ordered it yesterday at my local ebgames, owned by gamestop btw. Just because your store says it's not true doesn't mean it isn't true elsewhere. You can clearly see it on the sites:

    http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=270036
    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=270036

When you call your local gamestop again, ask if you can order the game with SKU# 270036. They will tell you yes and they will tell you it is Oblivion for PS3.

Why can't people think this is Bethesda Softworks brings in more money for Elder Scrolls V.Plus if the PSP one is a port it will look like Tomb Raider for the PSP.So I think it will be a new game set in the time of Oblivion.

Also Just because it says November 6 and the PS3 comes out on the 17 does not make it wrong. Why because many games come out before the system came out just look at what happened with the 360 there was game's you could buy at least a week before the system came out.Plus Japan gets the PS3 on November 11 so the six could be true.

Yes most likely it will not be bought even though its good but you never now this time around they may want Japanese to buy it.

So I think it could be true and if it is great news. For sure for the PSP that needs great RPG's.

This is possible because 360 games came out days before the system actually came out.... But i think this is bogus because the developers said this is a Exclusive to the 360 and u think MS is going to let one of their few Exclusive games run wild on the PS3??? well im still looking forward for bethesda to denny this, sorry guys but this is BS...

"As for the PS3 version i am appauled that Oblivion is coming to it, instead of wasting their money on a port that is already perfect on the Xbox360 and PC they should take that money and actually make something original, oops didnt mean to say that. I just cant blurt out facts like that!"

Oblivion wasn't perfect in Xbox360, it has a lot of bugs in-game, caching problems, not to mention freezes from what i read. And as Xbox360 is the first console made for the ported Oblivion, it may well serve as a guinea pig for Bethesda to make a perfect Oblivion game for the PS3. Besides, Oblivion may well be just another game in the haystack compared to other better games the PS3 has to offer. oops didnt mean to say that. I just cant blurt out facts like that!
