E3 06: It's a wrap

ESA says more than 60,000 attendees walked the halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center the past three days.

LOS ANGELES--At the end of the day, it's the numbers that rule.

For this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, which concludes today in Los Angeles, the number that show management is crowing about is 60,000--the total number of attendees that participated in the event this year.

Was Electronic Software Association (ESA) president Doug Lowenstein proud of the accomplishment? It seemed so.

Lowenstein, who opened the show just three days earlier, reminded the press that "E3Expo remains the most important gathering of interactive entertainment industry professionals on the planet, offering attendees unparalleled networking and business opportunities."

While the show this year was marked predominantly by announcements made on Monday and Tuesday by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, the show floor was anything but anticlimactic--GameSpot's coverage was encyclopedic in breadth and will continue to be added to, even past the 4 p.m. trumpet call that marks the official end of the show.

We hope our coverage made you feel as if you were on-site, jostling to play the industry's long list of upcoming games as well as gaining a glimpse of game industry greats and personalities from film and TV who were oft-sighted walking the show floor.

And for those who are prone to planning ahead, take note: E3 2007 is scheduled for May 16-18, 2007, right here in Los Angeles.

Damn, have any of you even stepped foot at E3?? Three days straight was enough for me...and it is EXHAUSTING! Try driving through LA traffic, finding parking, and mowing down throngs of big smelly men just to be first in line for an hour long wait to see the new Halo 3 trailer. Ok, I take it back - E3 should last a week!

E3 is without a doubt one of the most important gatherings for those within the video game industry and it's fans. I'd say the TGS(Tokyo Game Show) is a distant second. I live on the east coast and will admit that I'm seriously jealous of those in CA and surrounding states that go to the event every year. Right here and now, I vow that before my time on this world is through, I shall go to E3! ...even if it's only once.

    drack48,
You have many valid points, but I don't really care about you saying that the games only look like high end xbox games, I mean gears of war looks like some 1 year old PC games, does that mean its bad. The graphics are adequate, the xbox360 won't win this console war, Nintendo will again, in terms of profit. Sony will sell the most systems and the xbox360 will come in second again only because it launched a year early. No I'm not a Nintendo fanboy, I plan to get an xbox soon, already own a Gamecube and PS2.

It was a very interesting show. Finally we were able to see Wii and the PS3. Microsoft also showed some great games and this november will be very interesting, with three new consoles fighting for the consumer's money.

next year it will be ALL about the games. No more big hardware announcements, nothing but big name titles...

    -RE5
    -Halo 3
    -Ninja Gaiden 2
    -GTA4
    -DMC4
    -God of War 3???
    -Super Mario 128???

the list could go on and on. The games are what gets me excited, and next year there should be plenty of titles on show that I am really looking forward to.

Yes I believe Nintendo stole the show. Im holding out cause I am cheap and dont think i need 2+ consoles. I also just hate to give in to the power that is microsoft. I love my new g5 well its almost 2 years old and still more powerful than a lot of stuff out there. I hope nintendo can make some gains just because competition is good and I like seeing 3 very different systems out there...

  • keinuveye

    Posted May 15, 2006 8:25 am PT

yeah, bigger and badder next year. Longer would be good too. Just schedule some Blizzard costume contests =P

  • drack48

    Posted May 15, 2006 8:25 am PT

I don't know about nintendo stealing the show.. I realy wanted that to be the case, but the graphics on the wii look terrible. i know it isn't all about the graphics..but three to four year old computer games have better graphics! Seriously, I didn't expect prime 3 or Red Steel to look like the killzone trailer, but come on they look like....not even as good as hi end x box games! That system is almost five years old.

My point is the controller is amazing...but I don't want to open doors in fps that look like they cam out 3 years ago...it's just not gonna cut it against halo3 and gears of war.

Ninetendo has disapointed on the graphics and sony has dissapointed us aprice sooo high that it makes you sick and guess what microsft is going to win this round hands down. I've herd morte and more people say they are going to pick up a 360 after the announcement of the ps3 price

Sony and nintendo both let me down this e3

  • Dima_06

    Posted May 15, 2006 6:44 am PT

Nintendo, we need a price tag on the Wii and its launch games. Oh how you tease us so with your awesome demonstrations. Anyways, I'm sure the Nintendo Wii will retail for about $199 ~ $250 plus the cost of games. The virtual console part of the system will really drive sales through the roof once everything is up and running.
